The artwork is gorgeous. I really adored the style the soft pastels the stylization of the characters as well as the lettering was all really beautiful. The story was also a very sweet story to follow. Packed with emotion as the main character came to terms with her loss, facing her past. The sections written as diaries and letters are really interesting.

I do wish that we saw the development of the love story a wee bit more. It seemed like such a central part of the storyline yet we didn’t get a lot of pages of its development to find the romance aspects engaging.

However my favourite part of the graphic novel was the cute comic interludes from the talking cats of the town. The were weird and wonderful and catty. They made me giggle and I liked the very stylised depictions of the different breeds.

Overall this was a sweet little story with some really bitter sweet moments and beautiful artwork to compliment it.

An OK story about a woman in Paris whose father dies and leaves her his small town bakery. She hasn't spoken to her father since she was 8 and he kicked her and her mother out. When she comes back to town, she meets her great aunt and childhood friend again. Given these types of stories, you can tell where this heads from here.

The romance didn't ring that true. Maybe because she's so contrary and fickle while the boyfriend is impossibly patient. The dialogue was sometimes an issue too but that could have been lost in translation to English. The cursive passages were often a chore to read which didn't help either.

I loved the art style! The text had a cursive font that was hard to read at times. This was a lovely and sweet story.

This sweet emotional story about belonging and family made me smile all the way through. There are food and talking cats, and the art is amazing. I'm so happy I could read it, I will definitely buy the physical copy of this book.

As the title suggests 'Days of Sugar and Spice' is indeed a very sweet graphic novel. While the book went along a tried and tested path, it was such a sweet ride nevertheless. I really liked the style of art. I would definitely recommend!

This was cute and very fun to read! I love the artwork, and thought the story was very endearing. I love all the cats. I think this is a great title to shove at adults who think that reading graphic novels is like "cheating" or cutting corners. This might change their mind!

It has been a while since I read this graphic novel before writing out this review, so this review will be entirely on what I remembered. The graphic novel tells the story of Rose, who learns that her father has died. She returns to her childhood hometown to her father’s bakery. She goes through many memories and is reunited with family and friends. She soon realizes that she has to come up with a decision on what to do with the bakery and her life.

Between Rose and the bakery, her friends, and her aunt, I thought the story was very sweet. There wasn’t anything really added on to it, other than regaining relationships and running the bakery. I did enjoy seeing the relationships being developed from the beginning and ending and everything coming together. All in all, a very simple, easy story to read.

I know I should've read this waaaayy back, but kept stalling. And I was wondering why.

This laid-back comic is WONDERFUL, took me back to France where I spent my youth. In a slower paced story, I was brought back to a small city in France, where the heroine was conflicted by her late father's bakery. The story is about a Parisian who has to go back to her hometown where she and her mom were thrown out by the dad; meeting up her great-aunt and childhood friend; conflicted to go back to Paris or stay in the countryside reopening her dad's bakery.

Though it is a bit slow for me, I was amazed that I enjoyed the book so much.

A truly gorgeous little book filled with serene watercolors. Sometimes the most difficult part of growing up is moving and letting go. I've seen this book often described as whimsical but don't let its appearance fool you of what lay beyond its beautiful watercolors. I could (and would) read an entire book about the cats of this book, or at least buy stickers of them! It's a quick and enjoyable read!

I thought the story was touching and lovable!
I wish it had a let more to the story but I also prefer more plot based stories

This was such a whimsical story with a French flair to it. The artwork was beautiful and a little bit majestic. It has such a wintery, magical feel to it. And the cats! They were probably my favorite part of the entire story!

I'm so glad I didn't read this earlier, because this book was exactly what I needed while staying at home in quarantine.
I haven't read a lot of graphic novels before, so I was really excited to pick this up. Thankfully, I wasn't disappointed.
The story flows with a steady rhythm and it had the perfect french touch to it, which I adored. Rose was a really lovable and relatable character. I really liked reading about her.
If you want a short but uplifting story, definitely pick it up 💚

I haven't read stories in the comic for a long time and that was a beautiful surprise !! With a light flow but very well organized, a character is presented who can be very similar to ourselves (because I identify with an accumulated anger in her heart and a way that she expires for everyone).

If you are looking for a light, fast (and gastronomically delicious) reading, I highly recommend reading this!

This Art is SO CUTE! THE CATS IS EVERYTHING TO ME

There's nothing here that's not been done before, but this is still quite a winsome tale, of a French designer and artist who has to be dragged into recognising her destiny is in the bakery she's inherited back in Brittany. Semi-disembodied heads and a design using a lot of white space, with little in the way of actual guttering, kind of had me in mind of Posy Simmonds, and her genteel efforts would shelve right by the side of this. Don't come for anything too dramatic, but the Sunday afternoon movie sort of cosiness here is still welcome, and not exactly ineffectual.

What drew me first was the watercolor artstyle of the cover and then I read the blurb describing an angsty, seemingly unlikeable heroine. I'm happy to find that the inside of the book reflected the beautiful cover, with pleasing full-page illustrations and boxless panels, and the flowy and soft quality of the art masks some of the rougher, heavier themes. I will admit I liked that contrast and I liked that, for me, it helped strike a balance for the entire graphic novel.

I also liked how the characters were built, even when I found some of the decisions they made a little questionable, but that's on me. LOL. In the beginning, Rose was rude and self-absorbed, and Gael's upbeat chipper got into my nerves too. BUT it gets addressed early on, with short backstories/explanations of why they ended up being like that, and it's spot on. After they get called out on their flaws, it becomes easier for them to accept that changes they needed to improve their lives. I loved this aspect bec it showed a more accurate representation of how adulthood is like.

I also love the diversity and little jabs at immigration issues this book delivers. It doesn't center them, but it doesn't ignore them either and that inclusiveness appealed to me.

What I can't decide if I like or not was the drama towards the end, the ones brought about by past events. I appreciate the plot twists and the way the 'shock' factor was woven quite subtly in the story, but I felt the level of heaviness was unnecessary. Like, Rose's mother could've been a wee bit less villainous, or Gael's losing his parents could've been less tragic, or Marronde's secret could've been something else (!), and he story could still remain as solid as it is. But that's just me, personally. And well, the resolutions were done alright, I'm glad about how things turned out in the end, so I guess it's fine.

Other things I liked about this are:

+ the romance, which was really matured and grown-up given that there is childish wonder in some of the chapter dividers.
+ the found family aspect of it all. Rose and Gael, and even Marronde too, were the way they were bec of loneliness they were hiding inside, and this reopening of Brav Eo brought about a sense of belonging, and love, and support like they've been yearning for.
+ the journals and recipes!
+ the ending. I really loved how uplifting the book ended, and even though the book wasn't too long, it left me satisfied and happy for Rose and her life.

This was a really sweet graphic novel. The illustration style was fantastic, it had a really French flair that I just loved. The cats had to be my absolute favorite thing about this novel. It was humorous and real and fast paced. I also quite enjoyed that it wasn't in a typical comic book format but rather flowed organically. Great little story!

Cute graphic novel. However, first, a warning to parents with young children: this is not suitable for tender eyes. Though there are no explicit scenes, the main characters are shown in bed together.

The art is fairly good and I liked the soft watercolor-like colors...but I would have preferred more solid lines instead of the somewhat wispy drawings. Also, the fonts could have been bolder instead of the hard-to-read handwriting scripts.

The talking cats are unexpected and not what I would expect from a book not meant for children.

The storyline is okay for me. Fairly predictable ending with no real storylines to keep me reading with any enthusiasm. I didn't like the main female character and the behaviour of the aunty is just bizarre to me - such as not saying a single word to her niece when they first meet.

This was a sweet story about Rose, who inherits a bakery after her estranged father dies. On a whim she decides to leave her job in Paris and moves back to her childhood home, where she runs into her childhood sweetheart.

The art style is cute, switching of between minimal drawings of just the characters and full-sized panels filled with background details you can stare at for hours. There are brief interludes depicting the cats that roam around the town, having their own conversations about the town and its inhabitants, which at times felt a bit unnecessary.

I enjoyed Rose's relationship with her aunt, Marronde, who might be my favourite character.

One of my favorite graphic novels of this year. I loved everything about it, the plot, the characters, the illustrations are really beautiful. Europe comics did it again. Thanks to #europecomics and #netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
