The silent wife - Karin Slaughter
(Buddy read with @booksinthebath_reviews41)
Synopsis;
He watches.
A woman runs alone in the woods. She convinces herself she has no reason to be afraid, but she’s wrong. A predator is stalking the women of Grant County. He lingers in the shadows, until the time is just right to snatch his victim.
He waits.
A decade later, the case has been closed. The killer is behind bars. But then another young woman is brutally attacked and left for dead, and the MO is identical.
He takes.
Although the original trail has gone cold – memories have faded, witnesses have disappeared – agent Will Trent and forensic pathologist Sara Linton must re-open the cold case. But the clock is ticking, and the killer is determined to find his perfect silent wife….
Review;
When I received an email from netgalley with a Karin Slaughter book, I had to download it straight away. I have also read a few other standalone books by Karin Slaughter and loved each one. So I decided to do a buddy read with this book.
The book is quite long so it was difficult to get into. I had to stop, read another book then come back to The silent wife.
The beginning and middle of the book is very slow so I did lose interest sometimes. But mainly I would put this down to not knowing this book is part of a series and not realising this was the last book so far.
However, the ending really picked up. The book was very descriptive, a bit disturbing and dark. I always love a good thriller!

I've read Karin Slaughter before and liked her books. I think I've only read the first Will Trent though and I was a bit gobsmacked to realise this was no 10 in the series. I would have no worries about starting this book so late in the series. It does refer to previous books but I wouldn't say you had to have read them to get the most out of this one
This is a page turner all right. The plot steams along and carries you with it.
It's told both in the present and in flashbacks to the past when the local police chief jailed a man for a rape and murder that he may not have committed. Women are still disappearing even though he's in jail. Add in that said Police Chief is the (now dead) ex-husband of the current Medical Examiner, and she's now dating the detective working on the current cases. There is plenty of scope for plot twists and some great character development.
It's about a serial killer and women being raped and murdered in the woods so it's not the kind of book I would normally read these days. I'm not generally in favour of violence towards women in books. That said, this is well written and there were only a couple of places where I felt the descriptions were a bit too graphic for me. I liked the characters involved and I will probably go back and read some of the books I've missed in the middle of this series.
If you like graphic, serial killer suspense type books then this one is definitely for you. I see the final plot twist coming long before we got there, but I did enjoy the book.

I love Karin Slaughter’s books and this was no exception. The characters work beautifully together. The topic was shocking and I really didn’t foresee the end

The latest instalment of the Will Trent series. Although this could be a Jeffrey Tolliver book too. It was a great to go back in to that world of Sara Linton and Jeffrey Tolliver and it made me love Will Trent even more and made me less sad Sara had lost her husband. The crime and thriller element took me a little while to realise but it was all worth it.
In true Karin Slaughter style the graphic detail is not for the faint hearted but she excels at making you feel and understand what kind of pain the victims and their families must be suffering with her use of language and story telling.

This is the first book I've read of Karin Slaughter. WHY! Blistering plot merged with magnificant imagery has immediately escalated her work onto my small but reliable 'must read', list. For me a work has to excel in one of three things to hold my attention: plot, characters and writing. Ms Slaughter' book has all three.
Read the book. You'll see!

This is one of those books that I crave for. It kept me guessing. It kept me breathless and left me speechless. I was like "what? no way!!!" But I kept reading and I couldn't stop until I finished it and after the end, I had that urge of starting it all over again. This book is so twisted and plays with one's mind. It is definitely not for the weak.
The gruesome descriptions sent shivers down my spine and I am telling you, I had days when I kept looking back to make sure I am not followed, not to mention that I will definitely keep away from the local woods on my morning runs. At least for a while.
THE SILENT WIFE by Karin Slaughter is one of the few books I have read and made me sink into the story so much that I was afraid. She builds up the events with such detail that you can't stop and wonder if there is some truth in it, if such events are actually likely to happen in this twisted world.
Reading this book I have only one regret: I don't have a paperback of it and Kindle does not do it justice at all

So this is going to be a pretty short review. I think it's the lowest I've ever rated a book, so I'm just going to explain why. I feel as though I'm going to be the only person in the world rating it this as all the other reviews are 4/5 stars. The book literally didn't hook me at all. I enjoyed maybe the last 15% but even then it was a push. For me the book just didn't flow, I found myself getting lost and it was far too detailed for me - to the point things are mentioned which doesn't need to be.
The chapters were sooo long, and like I said, over detailed. I literally couldn't wait to end each chapter, hoping the book would reach its 😬 moment but nope! I didn't feel it. I did like the characters ie. Will & Sara.. And maybe it's just this book but how it's written just wasn't for me!!
I was expecting such a great book and honestly I'm confused how I ain't seeing what everyone else is!! But it just wasn't for me! And I love my thrillers but the whole book was abit flat.. The ending was super disappointing too. I was hoping the end would make up for all the book.

Having read all the books in the Grant County series and most of the books in the Will Trent series it was good to read another book about these familiar characters. This brings together, with the tale dealing with the past and the present, Jeffrey Tolliver and Will Trent - Sarah's dead husband and her present partner. This, in itself, makes life difficult for Sarah - and for her present partner, who cannot compete with a dead man! Add to this the disappearance of many women believed to have suffered accidental deaths and there is a compelling story. The subject matter is not for the faint-hearted, be warned. A real page turner with a few twists.
Many thanks to Netgalley/Karin Slaughter/Harper Collins UK for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

Brilliant, brilliant book, but that's hardly a surprise when Karin's books always are! If I could give it more than 5*, I would!
Having read some of Karin's previous books, I had high expectations for this book and this definitely lived up to that!
It was well written, although the writing was a bit gruesome at times, but that's to be expected with Karin. The details actually help you to really picture the scenes and really allows you to put yourself in the victims shoes (as horrible as it was with this one!).
The current case is linked back to an old case investigated by Jeffrey and his team a few years back and I love how Karin managed to intertwine the two in a way that's easy to follow. The old case is told to us through Jeffrey's perspective, which I know that people who love him and who know his story will be pleased about!
Obviously have to mention Will, Sara and Faith. I love them and it was so good to get lost in their world again!
You can't do a review without giving a shoutout to the wit and dark humor that are a constant feature in Karin's books. Even with the darkness, you'll know there'll be moments from Will, Sara, Faith and even Amanda that will make you laugh!
And lastly, without giving away any spoilers, I loved how this book ended!
I would highly recommend reading this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Karin for the chance to read this book.

I literally enjoyed every page of this brutal crime story. The story is tortuously cruel and the dark narrative of overwhelmed violence and rape disturbed me extremely. By following 4 people from the police force in the past and presence, I could follow the investigation thoroughly. As well as the investigation, I enjoyed the romance between Will and Sarah. As this is my first dig at this series, I really need to read the whole series. If you are a fan of crime novels, this is a must read! I marked this book as 5 stars without hesitation.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for a copy of this book.
Love Karin Slaughter’s books but not read any for a while. I’d forgotten what a brilliant author she is and she had me hooked (as usual) from beginning to end.
Deaths had been recorded as tragic accidents until Dr Sara Linton discovered that they were in fact murders and worse still committed by a serial killer. Loved how the book kept jumping back in time and the different ways two sets of investigators approached the deaths.
Can’t wait for the next Karin Slaughter book but first I must go back and read some of the amazing books I’ve missed..

This book isn't for the faint-hearted with very detailed graphic descriptions which don't leave much to the imagination. The author skilfully weaves the main plot of the murders around the complicated lives of the main characters. It seems that each character has issues, none of them perfect, but all different and interesting. I really wanted Will to have a happy ending, but maybe it would be too simple to tie up all the loose ends!

Having never read a book by Karin Slaughter and seeing some awesome reviews of her previous books I thought I would give this one a try. She is definitely one of my newest favourites and having realised (afterwards!) that this is part of a series I will be going back to read them from the beginning… I just need a few weeks off work to fit everything in!
Needless to say, this book can be read as a standalone and is perfectly enjoyable without any back story, I certainly didn’t feel that I was missing out on anything having missed the previous books.
The writing is not for the faint hearted, there is a lot of detail and the descriptions of the crimes are quite disturbing at times but it wraps you in an intricate web so you are completely compelled to continue.
This book is told with two timelines, Sara and the GBI investigate the possibility of an Atlanta serial killer with ties to a historical Grant County case. The book starts with a death in a prison which leads to them investigating inconsistencies which lead to the conviction of a paedophile. The paedophile claims there have been further similar crimes while he has been incarcerated which leads intertwines with a newer investigation bringing past and present together.
This has a great plot that is easy to follow and draws you in well. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing as well!
As you would expect with a series, the characters are well developed and even without reading the other books there is plenty enough information about them to know the basic back story.
Overall this was a great read that I couldn’t put down and kept me up well after bedtime!

Karin Slaughter's books are always something to look forward to and this latest just does not disappoint. Her books grab you from the first page to the last and you become totally absorbed with her characters and the story. Well written and fantastically plotted. 5 stars all the way.

Amazing!! Karin slaughter now has a new fan. This book had me on the edge of my seat willing Sara and Will to catch the serial rapist and murderer. I was itching for Lena to get her comeuppance. I did not expect the murderer to be who it was. This was really gripping to the end which keeps the reader enthralled, the style of writing is excellent. The plot and characters are full bodied and the reader can engage well with them. Definitely recommend.

Police based story. Will and his team have to reinvestigate a case of murder and rape. In charge of the investigation was Jeffrey who was married to Sara, who is now Will's girlfriend. Did Jeffrey charge the wrong man with the crime to get a conviction?
Not for the faint hearted, this book has pretty graphic descriptions of rape and murder. I found the first third a bit hard going as the scene is set but it is full of twists and turns right to the end

I was aware of the series and this was my first outing into a will Trent novel. As soon as i finished I went back to order the full series. A typical Karin Slaughter novel that will not disappoint fans of the author.

This novel is as shocking as it is gripping. A number of dreadful atrocities have been commited against women but does this add up to a serial murderer? The MO seems very similar but some victims have survived and are too traumatised to offer much detail. However, the dead tell a tale which rules out death by misadventure.
The Silent Wife is best read on an empty stomach as some of the descriptions bring the horror of the crimes all too vividly to mind. It's not all about the crimes though, there's an underlying love story, some really believable characters and a degree of wit. The police investigation was lacking the expertise to consider the medical knowledge of the would be offender and it may have brought someone to book sooner if they had. Additionally, rather than punish Miranda Newbury, they should have employed her for her analytical skills.
All told, a very good thriller which earns every one of the five stars of merit I give it.

The Silent Wife is exactly what you’d expect from Karin Slaughter, tense, exciting and not that easy to solve.
Her descriptions of the crimes are definitely not for the faint hearted but they are necessary and it means that you truly invest in the story and understand from both the victims and killers point of view.
This had me so tense, I had to put it down for a minute of two but then picking it right back up as I needed to know what happened next.

Firstly thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for this copy of the book. My first Karin Slaughter read and it certainly won't be the last. I was told by a friend that Slaughter uses characters from previous books and that Will Trent is a reoccurring character. This didn't matter at all as I have no frame of reference and it wasn't the sort of book where I needed to know his previous dealings. I can imagine that if I had read the previous books, another dimension would have been added to the story though.
'The Silent Wife' had a gripping plot with such interesting characters, it made for an immersive read and one I raced through. The merging of past and present proved a fruitful way of moving the narrative along as well as giving that information to fill in the back story.
If you want a suspenseful, tense and often violent read, it is definitely one for you!
