Very enjoyable read.

We hear from both Poppy and Betty and also another who is on trial for murder. The story is written via chapters interspersed with letters and this is a great way to lay out the story.

I made a mistake is indeed about a mistake, or two, or three... It seems no one is perfect and mistakes make us who we are. Sometimes in a deadly way.

A great read, I'd recommend, this is one of Jane Corry's best I think.

Poppy and Stuart are married with two daughters. Plodding along with their marriage not exactly passionate as they both work long hours and bringing up teenage daughters is a job in itself. Thankfully Stuart’s mother, Betty, lives with them and helps a lot.
Poppy meets an old flame and he ignites something inside her but what toll will this take on her family. Interwoven with a then and now with Poppy and the story of Betty’s life this is a story you just can’t put down!
I was so excited when I was given the chance to read this story and it is my favourite of Jane’s books to date. Fabulously written and such a twisty tale.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I was excited to read another Jane Corry book and this does not disappoint! I Made a Mistake opens with an intriguing scene at a tube station - we don’t know what has happened or why, but we know it is something bad. And then we are taken back 6 weeks and introduced to Poppy’s life with her husband, two daughters and her mother in law.

She seems to have everything on the surface but her marriage is unhappy and, when she bumps into her college boyfriend Matthew, things start to unravel...

Interspersed between the chapters about Poppy are letters, from Poppy’s mother in law Betty to Poppy. Telling her about her life as a young girl, meeting her husband and having her son. It is not the happy married life that the family assumed she had had.

This novel is filled with intrigue and a growing sense of dread about how things will end up for Poppy and why Betty is telling her tale through her letter. The flashbacks to Betty’s younger years are especially gripping and the two women are very likeable and complex characters. A very satisfying read!

I Made A Mistake
Jane Corry
Publisher: Penguin Books UK
Publication Date 28 May 2020

Jane Corry writes about ordinary women who find themselves in extraordinary situations. The main character is flawed but that makes her seem even more believable.

I Made a Mistake alternates between the story of Poppy Page, letters written by Betty, Poppy’s Mother In Law and the “now” where someone is on trial for murder. I found the tension built keeping me engrossed and desperate to find out the conclusion. Plenty of twists and turns.

Thank you to the author, publisher and netgalley for providing me with this advance digital copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Wow wow wow. Absolutely loved this book. Such a fantastic read which draws you straight in. I loved the way Poppy and Betty's stories run side by side. I loved the ending too. It could have finished sooner but I loved the little twist at the end. Definitely will be recommending this to all my bookworm friends.

Oh my word, another masterpiece from Jane Corry! I’m so lucky to have found this talented author. I’m sure many can relate to the struggles of Betty and Poppy. There were moments when I had tears in my eyes, and times when I felt devastation & annoyance at certain characters in the story. Another great read, keep them coming Jane!! Well worth 5 humongous stars!

A fantastic, thought provoking story that makes you as a reader think about what we take for granted.

The story is written from the perspective of 2 women- a mother in law and daughter in law and their stories of being married. They are each challenged throughout their marriages by temptations and a feeling that they could have something better. It is when they give into their temptations that they begin to see how the consequences can severely impact on those they love.

It is thought provoking and moving and a fantastic read I would highly recommend it

Well, there are plenty of mistakes here that’s for sure! Poppy Page once an aspiring actress now runs a successful extras agency. She’s been married to Stuart, a dentist, for twenty years and they have two daughters, Melissa and Daisy. At an extras party in December she meets ex-boyfriend Matthew Gordon who she’d loved dearly and hasn’t seen for many years. This is the beginning of mistakes that Poppy makes which deeply impact on the whole family. Betty is Poppy’s mother in law who lives with them. She and Poppy are very close and Betty loves Poppy as a daughter. In a series of letters to Poppy Betty describes life with her deceased husband Jock and the many mistakes she makes in their early years together. The story is told by Poppy and Betty and is interspersed with scenes at The Central Criminal Court where a murder trial is underway.

The book is well written with good pacing and there are plenty of twists and turns some of which you don’t see coming. The characters are very well portrayed and you get a clear sense of them. Most characters are likeable but a couple are loathsome but they are both pivotal to the novel. Betty’s story is the stand out one for me as she’s the character I like the best although she needs to ditch the purple berets! Her courtship and marriage to Jock in the late 60’s and early ‘70’s are a fascinating snapshot of that period of time. It is shortly after she gives birth to Stuart that Betty makes a mistake that is to dominate her life. Her life spirals downwards just as Poppy’s does after rejecting Matthew and Betty does all she can to help her beloved daughter in law. Although it’s undoubtedly fair to say that Poppy by no means deserves the fallout from her meeting with Matthew she does bring some of the damage upon herself. The scenes at the court are intriguing and add another layer to the storytelling. Although I like the ending I think the novel deserves a stronger one as it doesn’t quite measure up to the previous strength.

Overall, a really enjoyable read which I recommend.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for the ARC.

With apologies I didn't finish this book I got to a quarter of the way through and just couldn't get into the storyline.

A gripping read by Jane Corry. Betty and Poppy’s stories are interwoven to explain the events that led to the court case. The characters were fascinating and none without fault. A great, enthralling read.

Alternating narrative between Poppy (an agent for extras) and Betty (her mother in law), this book runs the gamut of relationships, friendships, hardships and the way cultures shift over time.
I actually enjoyed Betty and her story more than Poppy- who to me came across a bit whiny and needy and never satisfied with her (altogether really quite lovely) life.
When an old flame catapults himself back into Poppy's life things start to go very wrong. The story, and the truth, unfolds in a series of letters from Betty to Poppy, written from prison.
A great premise and a great ending with good characterisation...I was rooting for Betty all along, less so Poppy!

I Made a Mistake is told from the points of view of Betty and Poppy. It's a blend of psychological thriller and family drama, with lots of emotional themes running through it like domestic abuse, stalking, rape, infidelity. I found Betty's story more engaging than Poppy's and at times I found the narrative was a bit slow and the descriptions of Poppy's domestic life seemed a little ordinary. Yet this aspect also works well when things happen that threaten that ordinary life because it makes it all the more real. The plot simmers to hold the suspense and the tension really builds up. I thought the twist was great and I wasn't expecting it to turn out the way it did. An enjoyable read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found myself looking forward to picking it up again after a hard day's work! The different character perspectives were excellent and tied together very well and I enjoyed the development of the story into a disturbing psychological thriller. Recommended.

A solid storyline that instantly hooked me in but then lost me towards the end with its drawn out conclusion. It very much felt like the novel should've ended after the resolution of the crime. Yes, it was nice to see how the characters moved on beyond the climactic close but for me it weakened the read and I found myself just skim reading the last few pages.

I thoroughly enjoyed this character-based domestic thriller. It opens with a shocking incident at a Tube station, which grabbed my interest and raised lots of questions that kept playing through my mind as I read.. The two narratives held my attention equally, and I loved the relationship between Poppy and mother-in-law Betty. In all, a compelling and entertaining story.

Poppy Page, once an aspiring actress, now runs a casting agency for extras; husband Stuart is a dentist. Also at home are teenage daughters Melissa and Daisy, and Betty, Poppy’s mother in law.

When Poppy meets an old flame, Matthew (who once played a handsome vicar in a popular TV series) at an event, the stage is set for a mistake which will have far reaching consequences for everyone.

Alongside Poppy’s narrative, we hear from Betty. Betty is a pretty amazing older lady with great joie de vivre (even if her penchant for purple berets does feel like it might be trying just a teeny bit too hard). But her life wasn’t always this way, as we learn when she narrates her story via letters to Poppy. Betty, too, has made her mistakes, but how do they connect to the present situation?

Jane Corry’s books are always compulsive reading and this was no exception; Betty’s story was particularly engaging. It was a gripping read for most of the story but went ever so slightly off the boil for me towards the end - I’m not even sure why. But overall, an excellent read.

Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. I've really enjoyed Jane Corry's previous books so was pleased to be given an ARC of this one. It did not disappoint. The story was told from multiple perspectives (I particularly enjoyed Betty's) and introduced surprising and exciting twists right to the end. An unpredictable and enjoyable read, I look forward to the next one from Corry!

This book was an interesting read, really liked the alternate voices. Didn't really warm to Poppy Page as a character but I'm not sure you were meant too! A good read for a weekend curled up on the sofa!
