I just love Carolyn Brown! She writes about small town life as I know it! She is so witty! Makes me laugh out loud! This was a sweet read about three elderly sisters helping a broken young girl and healing them all, including their neighbor. Great work once again, Carolyn!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book and am voluntarily reviewing it.

A homeless pregnant woman arrives at the bus stop outside a beauty salon where the Carson sisters are getting their hair done. Ginger has a baby in her belly and only a single dream in her heart -- for her baby to see the ocean. She has no family, but knows that she must keep moving forward.

She is found by the Carson sisters, a trio who live together in the house where they were raised according to their mama's rules. An unconventional group of seniors, they can be found growing marijuana or making moonshine in the basement of their home. They invite Ginger into their home to work for them, alongside another of their employees, Sloan, who has more in common with her than either realizes.

I absolutely loved The Banty House and could not get enough of the colorful Carson sisters. The Banty House is a heart-warming story of love, support, and sometimes finding not what you are looking for, but what you need. This book made me laugh and smile at the same time.

Ginger was pregnant, homeless, broke, and alone when she unexpectantly met the Carson sisters. They took her home (per rules of the Banty House) and cared for her. Ginger intended to stay only briefly to regroup. She learned that the home of the sisters has a history as a brother and is run by a list of rules that are all about kindness to others. The sisters are hilarious and full of tradition. Ginger grows in their care and feels a kinship of family that she has never felt before. This is a beautiful story of women supporting each other and helping others.

The Banty House by Carolyn Brown
Source: NetGalley and Montlake
Rating: 5 HUGE stars

For a long time now, I have touted Carolyn Brown as my go-to girl for small town reading, but The Banty House has taken that to next-level status!

Betsy, Connie, and Kate Carson have spent their entire lives in little Rooster, Texas. With every decade that passes, more and more of Rooster’s residents have packed their bags and left town. Today, there’s not much left in Rooster beyond the older families, the church, the Carson sisters (of course!), and their beloved Banty House. While one might suspect the Carson sisters, given their respective ages have slowed down, that is far, far from the truth.

For the past 60+ years, the Carson sisters have not only been gainfully employed in the most unusual of ways, but they have also staunchly and avidly protected their family name and legacy. In years past, when times were far harder than they are now, the Banty House saved the Carson women and kept them solvent in times when many others were not. The Carson sisters are not only proud of their heritage but proud to carry on its rules and traditions in their own particular way(s). First among the rules of the Banty House is to never turn away a stranger and/or a person in need.

Ginger Andrews is about as in need as a girl can get. At seven months pregnant and homeless, Ginger has finally run out of money and road in Rooster, Texas. Though she has no intention of staying in Rooster, Ginger also doesn’t have many choices and when the Carson sisters offer her a hot meal and a warm bed, at least for a night two, Ginger accepts their hospitality. Instantly, Ginger feels not only comfortable in the Banty House but accepted and liked, all feelings she has rarely every felt in the entirety of her young life.

Helping the Carson sisters at the Banty House is one of the most fascinating and rewarding jobs Ginger has ever had. Given their unusual interests and activities, the Carson sisters are the most surprising and delightful people Ginger has ever known. Outside of their oddities, there is also their kindness, wicked sense of humor, and willingness to help others. Ginger has never felt so accepted and cared for and while she never intended to put down roots in Rooster, leaving and/or the prospect of leaving becomes harder with each passing day.

Though life in such a small town would seemingly be lazy and slow, life in Rooster is anything but. While the Carson sisters aren’t ashamed of their past, some in Rooster aren’t thrilled with it and are always looking to stir the pot and cause trouble. As Ginger quickly discovers, the three elderly ladies are anything but old and more than willing to stand up for their beliefs, their heritage, and their way of life. They live by their momma’s rules, believe in God and a mostly righteous path, and defending that and those which they love and hold dear.

The Bottom Line: No matter what, I want to be the Carson sisters when I grow up! There were so, so many times I found myself laughing aloud and just marveling at the audacity of the Carson sisters. To be sure, they won’t tolerate any negativity toward their family and are willing to defend all, no matter the consequences. But, above all the hilarity and audacity was the strong sense of justice, family, and love that simply oozes out of the Carson sisters in both their words and their actions. As Ginger’s story unfolds, so does the Banty House/Carson family story and each revelation made me love the whole hot mess even more. Ginger is so young, and the influence of the Carson sisters touches her so deeply and profoundly that it alters her entire future in the best possible ways. I loved Ginger’ s story just as much as the Carson sisters and found this book as a whole to be simply fantastic. I’m not sure Carolyn Brown is going to be able to top The Banty House on my list of favorites, but I sure look forward to her trying to do so.

Just a few pages and I fell madly in love with this book! The three elderly sisters are a hoot and the main characters of Ginger and Sloan are very relatable and authentic. I was going to say I wanted a sequel until I read the last chapter!

Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advanced reading copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I love books that I can identify with and characters that are familiar to me. The Banty House by Carolyn Brown isn't that book. I wish it was!! This story is better than good. It's a must-read! I can't identify with three old ladies that grow pot, make moonshine and have "toys" hidden in their bottom nightstand drawer. And, as for a pregnant, homeless girl with a depressing past, I wouldn't know about that. After reading The Banty House I feel like i have missed out. From the first page to the epilogue ( I love epilogues!) this book is a treat. If you want to restore your faith in an imperfect world, then curl up with this book!

Reading a Carolyn Brown book is one of the joys in life. The Banty Housr introduces three lively older ladies who distill moonshine, grow pot, and exact revenge in the most creative ways. They find pregnant Ginger who needs love and attention. Added to the mix is hunky Sloan who has demons that need expunged. They are a wacky group, but readers will delight in the family they create. The best scene is the fight between Edith and Betsy. I'm impatient to read the next Brown book.

I am not quite sure what to say about this story.. It had it's funny moments and certainly some interesting characters but that is the best I can come up with. I was disappointed. I received this ARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I adored this book! I love the 3 spinster sisters, Connie, Betsy, and Kate. Although the younger character, Ginger is the main character, I think the elderly sisters steel the show with their crazy antics and beliefs. They literally had me laughing outlaid while I was reading. My favorite line was a prayer that one of them said before dinner asking for God to hospitalize their sworn enemy so a colonoscopy could be performed and the corncob pulled from her butt! So funny! Very Golden Girl-esque. Of course, this is Carolyn Brown, so there is a romance budding between Ginger and the neighbor boy. This is a book about finding home, friendship, love, family, and healing. It is a nice, light, and happy-ever-after story! I highly recommend, one of my favorite that I've read so far this year.

Ginger, a pregnant homeless teenager. Three elderly eccentric spinsters – Kate, Connie, Betsy – living together in the family home, a former brothel. Sloan, their handsome, single but troubled neighbor / friend / handyman. Rooster, Texas, a town of 95 inhabitants, with all the scandals and frictions of a much larger town.

Doesn’t sound like a fun story, but it is one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in a long time. I kept finding myself smiling at the antics of the sisters and their friends. The interaction among the sisters and of each sister with Ginger was engaging and true to life. And, then there’s Sloan – PTSD, guilt, loneliness. His ability to overcome his challenges as he faces his past is authentic and gratifying. Proof positive that a family does not necessarily have to be related by blood.

I would recommend this book to any anyone looking for a good read. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. The opinion is my own – read this book so you can smile too!

Another charming novel with quirky characters and a sweet tale of friendship and love. With her characteristic wit, offbeat dialogue, and picturesque small-town setting, Carolyn Brown reminds us that family isn't always a blood-relation but can be found among those we choose. It's a sweet and languid tale that will leave you laughing, wiping away a tear, and sighing in satisfaction at the very last page.

The Banty House was a great read, I could not put this book down and read it in 2 days. The love that was shared between the sisters was so heart warming. Also the love they shared with a total stranger and her unborn baby. They all had their share of heartaches in their lives, from their pasts to the current day, but they overcame them and saw the good in others. The sisters were full of life and mischief but do not cross them or any one in their inner circle or there would be consequences. I really enjoyed the Banty House.

Take 1 old brothel, 3 elderly sisters, 1 retired solider, and 1 pregnant woman and what do you get? Banty House!
Banty House is a sweet story filled with love, laughter, and healing. The characters are easy to fall in love with and the sisters will have you laughing out loud. If you love a good romance or just need a break from suspense books, you should check this out.
It has been a while since I read a book by Carolyn Brown and I can honestly say that she has not lost her touch.
Thank you Carolyn Brown, #Netgalley and # Montlake for the ARC.

Ginger lucked out the day that she sat down on a bench in Rooster, TX. The amount of love that is showed to her in the weeks that follows made me tear up. Sloan is so wonderful, I just love how he steps up and helps so many, not just Ginger.

I adore this book. The characters are deep and rich and so real! I felt like I was right there in Rooster, Tx and never wanted to leave. I was rooting for Ginger from the get go. Betsy is a hoot but then so are all of the sisters. Sloan is real and wounded and so worthy. You will not regret picking up this book by one of my favorite authors!!

What a wonderful and heartwarming story of three elderly women, a young pregnant teen and a soldier suffering from PTSD! Ginger is pregnant and trying to get to the Pacific Ocean with her unborn child. She runs out of funds in the little Texas town of Rooster. There she is invited to stay with Kate, Betsy and Connie Carson at their homestead, the Banty House, for as long as she needs to stay. She is given chores to do and earns money doing them. Kate, Betsy and Connie are more than generous paying her, just as they are generous with their handyman and neighbor, Sloan Baker. Sloan shows up daily to help out doing whatever the sisters cannot do, like take care of the cornfield or clean the car weekly. Kate uses the corn to make her own moonshine in the basement. Betsy grows and smokes her own weed. Connie dusts everything in sight, so the house is sparkling clean. Into this home comes Ginger, a frightened and displaced pregnant teen. All of the characters have a history to share, and it is their sharing of their history that I was engaged and enthralled by the story. The eccentric Carson sisters are unbelievably unique but still believable. Sloan and Ginger are dealing with demons from their pasts and depending on the sisters and each other to come out on the other side. I really enjoyed learning about these characters and would look forward to seeing them again in another book. They were amusing and they taught a lesson about how each of us should treat others.

Once again, Carolyn Brown does not disappoint in delivering a fast, feel-good read this is for you. The sisters were a trip and, in my opinion, the best characters in the book. Light-hearted and fun, this is a great book to add to your TBR list.
