I’d like to thank HQ and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘His and Hers’ written by Alice Feeney in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

A woman is found dead in the village of Blackdown and BBC newsreader Anna Andrews and cameraman Richard Jones are sent from London to cover the news item. DCI Jack Harper, Anna’s ex-husband, and DS Priya Patel who work for the Major Crime Team are called upon to investigate. Anna was brought up in Blackdown and knows the victim well as they were at school together and Jack suspects his ex-wife of somehow being involved as she seems to know details of the case before the police make them public.

‘His and Her’ is a superbly chilling and well-written psychological thriller told in alternate chapters by Anna Andrews and Jack Harper, moving effortlessly from their teenage years to the present time. The plot is fast-paced with drama, tension and unbelievable twists and turns, both characters lying and keeping secrets from each other and neither of them being above reproach. I didn’t find the characters very likeable but they fitted perfectly into the story, and throughout the time I was reading I had absolutely no idea who the killer was as I was constantly changing my mind. It wasn’t until the last chapters that all was revealed and when the conclusion came it was a huge surprise and completely unexpected. This is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller and one I can wholeheartedly recommend.

I appear to be in a minority here, but I really struggled with this book. The characters weren't particularly likeable and it was all a bit predictable. I didn't actually finish it as it just didn't hold my interest.

As the title implies this was written in my favourite style with chapters alternating between 'His and Hers' side of the story. 'His being DCI Jack Harper the police detective leading a murder investigation and 'hers' being Anna Andrews a news presenter covering the story - with both quickly realising that they knew the victim.

This was a real fast-paced, addictive, conundrum that kept me guessing from start to finish. I didn't guess the eventual identity of the killer, continually changing my mind with every twist and turn, and indeed every chapter as alternating between Jack and Anna's conflicting perspectives. I particularly loved the ending which apparently is a trademark of Alice Feeney but which having not read her before I was totally unprepared for. In explanation, you think it's all over when the author starts wrapping things up, having led you to a convincing conclusion, but then on the very last page she delivers a massive u-turn with one crazy last twist.

The author is also known for putting the psycho in psychological thriller - and this was no exception. Pretty much every character could be considered slightly psychotic or flawed, dysfunctional, dark and disturbing at the very least. Weirdly though, despite not being likeable, I still found myself rooting for some of the characters - and as such was really pleased with the unexpected swerve ending.

In terms of the plot itself there was quite a lot going on - and unnecessarily so in my opinion. There was obviously the murder investigation, which naturally was linked to a long buried but not forgotten secret, but there were also two other incidents. You could argue these added more intrigue, red herrings, etc and one perhaps did provide a bit of context but the other was really irrelevant and just devalued it a bit as I thought "really, all that happened to one person?' Just a warning too that there were some sensitive themes covered. I can't give specifics without spoiling the plot and it was nothing too disturbing but just a bit darker, gritted than some.

Overall an addictive, unpredictable, page-turner with a great unexpected ending - definitely worth a read.

Wow what a great who done it story. A lot of great twists and throwbacks. Didn't see the end coming. Will be looking into more by this author if this book has anything to go by.

Thank you to Netgalley and Alice Feeney for this ARC in exchange for an honest review

Thoroughly enjoyed this dark & twisted tale.
This is the 1st book in a while that has completely caught my imagination and I was hooked from the outset.

Another pacy highly readable and addictive novel here from Alice Feeney, a fairly typical but none the less enjoyable psychological thriller that is a proper page turner.

Two sides to a story, secrets revealed in cleverly designed fashion, a plot you sink into and have great fun trying to predict. All the hallmarks of the genre that makes it so popular plus a writer with talent behind the scenes.

If I had one small bugbear it was that the final twist if you like was just a bit overkill. Up to that point I found the whole thing very believable. But that's definitely a personal thing not a comment on quality which was excellent.

This is the first of Alice Feeney’s books I have read - though I have another one in paperback - it won’t be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller. It tells the story from two POV - Anna & Jack - when a girl is found murdered in the woods of the village they grew up in they have to put their differences aside as they try to find out who killed Rachel Hopkins.
Loads of twists, so much suspense & an ending I did not see coming. If you love Tess Gerritsen you’ll love Alice Feeney.
Thanks #netgalley & #harpercollins for giving me the opportunity to read & review this book.

This was a fantastic book - really kept me guessing until the very end. I *love* an unreliable narrator and a jaded detective - this did not disappoint on both counts. Really atmospheric and quite scary and eerie in places. Definitely recommend this book.

A thriller with far too many co-incidences to feel realistic. The basic premise is very good, all the girls who had hurt Anna in the past are having fatal encounters. The story is told from the point of view of Anna and then that of the detective. A few red-herrings are thrown in to keep the suspense going.
Spilt by the unrealistic ending.

His and Hers by Alice Feeney is the first book from the author I have read, and I can’t wait to read more.
The story is told in two point of views, His and Hers, when a woman has been murdered in the town of Blackdown and the lead detective is DCI Jack Harper. Little does is bosses know he has a personal interest in this. He knew the victim; he met her the night previously and someone is trying to frame him for her murder. Newsreader Anna Andrews is being asked to cover the case, but she is reluctant. One reason as Jack Harper is her ex-husband but also as the murdered woman is an old school friend from years ago.
This story is a dark, twisty tale of secret and lies. Each character telling their own story but whether they are telling the truth is up to you to decide. It’s cleverly written. And it kept me guessing and guessing, thinking that I knew who the killer was. But there is surprising twist at the end. I highly recommend.

Simply brilliant! Really not quite sure what else there is to say! I was completely gripped by this cleverly written, dark and suspense- filled thriller that kept me guessing right till the end. So many twists and unexpected turns, brilliantly written - I couldn’t put it down. Bravo 👏

I'm not attempting to write a lengthy review of this book - it won't do it justice. It is simply brilliant and if anyone is bothering to read this review then please, please read the book slowly.
Usually with books the headline comments in the synopsis make you wonder if they are talking about the same book. The one-liners for His and Hers are not good enough.
The book alternates between'him' and 'her' chapters. The prose and way of writing is superb and way beyond the vast majority of modern mystery/thriller books. There are also hints of humour and I don't believe I have ever read a book with as many 'surprises' or twists often coming at the end of each short chapter.
As usual I had worked out who was the culprit well before the end but sadly also as usual I got it wrong. I will be amazed and envious if someone gets it right first time
Must be one of the top books for 2020

A dark and twisted tale that kept your head spinning as you try to guess the outcome.
A great read.

Oh what a deliciously twisted and completely mind blowing a read this was and I loved it !! My head was spinning trying to work out just who the perpetrator was and with two completely unreliable narrators Anna Andrews and DCI Jack Harper it was impossible to guess who was telling the truth and who was lying, I changed my mind so many times as to who was doing what and don’t you just love that in a story that’s what makes a book special in my opinion.
This is a read that’s almost impossible to describe so I’m not going to try, its full of twists and because of the way it’s told it will have you banging your head on the wall trying to figure out what the hell is going on, brilliantly written, totally compulsive I loved every minute of it and can highly recommend it.
Many, many thanks to Alice Feeney this was one hell of a read !!
My thanks also to NetGalley and HQ for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

There are two sides to every story, which means someone is always lying…

When a murder occurs in Blackdown, newsreader Anna Andrews is unenthusiastic about covering the story. This means returning to the village where she grew up, which is the last thing she wants to do…

DCI Jack Harper is heading the case and he becomes suspicious that Anna might be involved in the crime. Anna is also his ex-wife…

Someone is lying. Are some secrets worth killing to keep?

I see that many other readers have written this, but wow - Alice Feeney has done it again! The complexities this author weaves into a story are amazing. Feeney is an extremely skilled writer, and she masterfully manipulates the reader into metaphorically pointing the finger at a different character every few chapters.

I am usually left feeling slightly deflated when reading crime thrillers, often suspecting the correct culprit from early on. However, with this story I went back and forth; back and forth; and then double-backed again, before being surprised at the end…well, mostly. I can’t say I didn’t have my suspicions.

As with Feeney’s previous novel, Sometimes I Lie, I found I didn’t empathise with any of the characters. In fact I didn’t even like them that much. This isn’t because they are bad characters, or not well written, just the opposite in fact. Absolutely no one in this authors stories are above being cast in the role of killer, therefore, utterly untrustworthy and not particularly personable.

Some of the themes in this novel are quite dark, and some of the subjects might not be pleasant reading for everyone, however, I like my thrillers gritty and twisted. If you do too, this is the one for you!

There are several layers of cleverly crafted lies within this dramatic mystery but who is telling the reader the truth, is it her or is it him? You are never quite sure, which is truly sublime as the author keeps you guessing but just when think you have the case solved, with a swift turn of the page the rug is pulled out from under your feet and the drama. The suspense is perfectly pitched and the characters are suitably suspicious.

Although the the title of the book is his and hers the segmentation into his and hers chapters is mangled by the introduction of unannounced characters. This is meant to tantalize but the effect is irritation instead. I almost have up halfway through which is a bad sign but persisted to the tortured end. Quite the silliest ending in a while.

I’m not going to beat about the bush His And Hers by Alice Feeney made for one of those ‘complete head f##k’ kind or reads! The author expertly weaves a deliciously dark, twisty tale, which shocked me to the core! No mean feat when you read as many psychological thrillers as I do.

His and Hers is mainly narrated by two characters, His: DCI Jack Harper, is the lead Detective on a murder case in the village of Blackdown, it soon becomes apparent that he knows more about the victim than he is letting on. Hers: Anna Andrews, a news presenter, and  borderline alcoholic, is sent to report on the murder. She discovers that her ex husband, Jack, is the senior investigating officer and the dead woman is part of her past, a past she prefers to keep buried.

Neither character is a reliable narrator, Jack and Anna don’t even trust each other! So how the hell is the reader meant to? As the story progresses there are lots of grey areas, the characters muddy the lines between half truths and lies, making sure the reader can’t take anything they say at face value, for me this made the read much more exciting, and unpredictable, something that can sometimes be lacking in a novel of this genre. If I’m honest Anna and Jack aren’t the most likeable characters, in fact sometimes I just wanted to give Jack an almighty slap! but that said, it’s their flawed personalities that make it difficult to trust them. Normally I need to feel a connection to the characters if I’m going to relate to their story, but in this instant it no way spoilt my enjoyment of this read, and come the end I found myself warming to both Jack and Anna.

The book takes a dark and more than one disturbing turn, some turns are shocking, others misdirect the reader. I found the pacing perfect, a constant shifting of tension which reaches fever pitch for the shocking conclusion. I read a lot of psychological thrillers, so rarely do they have the element of surprise I crave, but Alice Feeney pulled the rabbit out the hat with this book, I never seen THAT coming! His And Hers is an unsettling, psychological thriller, with twists and misdirection at every turn, it’s definitely one of the best psychological thrillers I’ve had the pleasure to read this year. Highly recommended.
