This is such a good, solid 'whodunnit' and there are many characters, making it a really difficult one to guess - I certainly didn't.
There are a few stories interwoven, all told from the 'his' and 'hers' perspective. Some of the these we know, some we don't.
All told, I'd highly recommend as an easy read murder mystery that held my attention throughout.
I don't want to give anything away, but, a BBC newsreader returns to her hometown following a murder and is met by her ex-husband who is the man leading the investigation. What follows is a twisty turny story of relationships, grief, childhood trauma and murder and I'd recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to preview.
WOW!!! This one kept me guessing--and all of my guesses were completely wrong. I love it when a book can hook you, fool you, and satisfy you all at once. Great read.
Alice Feeney has hit the ball out of the park once again and written another disturbingly dark and affecting thriller that will hook you in from page one...
His & Hers is full of twists, turns, suspense and shocks. It is the quintessential thriller that you won’t be able to help but devour as quickly as a hungry predator consumes it’s freshly caught prey. The beauty of Feeney’s writing is that she casually and very cleverly leads you down multiple paths consecutively. This skill has you guessing at numerous different killers, outcomes, motives and plot twists. All the while the truth becomes buried deeper and deeper in subterfuge and the final reveals are genuinely shocking - I guarantee that you won’t guess the ending! Along the way the scene in which the story unfolds is beautifully set and I could really imagine myself in Blackdown. The juxtaposition of the picturesque village in the beautiful English countryside and the violent, gruesome murders paints a genuinely unsettling backdrop. There are notes of classic Hammer Horror in the setting (albeit a far more intelligent narrative) and there’s something very British about this story. I felt actual chills at points and found parts truly unsettling, which will stay with me for a long time.
Feeney is also excellent at developing deep and fundamentally flawed characters. His & Hers is no different and the lead characters - Anna Andrews (Her) and Jack Harper (His) - are both complex and richly developed. The narrative is relayed through both these characters: Anna is simultaneously sympathetic, vitriolic and sometimes detestable, whilst Jack is similarly sympathetic, occasionally weak and often self-indulgent. Interspersed between their chapters is another, unknown voice - the voice of the killer. The conflicting characteristics of the protagonists make them both likeable and not: so therefore all the more realistic and either one could be the unknown voice. Feeney’s style will also keep you guessing what involvement both protagonists might really have in the murders. Victim or killer, truth-teller or liar, his story or hers...you’ll have to read it to find out!
I highly recommend this thrilling and unnerving novel.
Loved this book by Alice Feeney but also hated it. Loved the fascinating storyline involving BBC newsreader Anna Andrews and her complicated relationship with ex-husband and murder detective DCI Jack
Harper. Their paths cross again when Anna is sent to cover the murder of an old school friend and Jack is tasked with solving the case. Bodies start to mount up and suspicions are raised regarding who could be responsible. Now the hate bit. This book completely screwed with my brain because it was so cleverly written that I couldn’t tell if it was the character talking or the actual murderer. It might take me a while sometimes but usually I manage to fathom out who the murderer is before the end of the book. Not this time ! I changed my mind so many times thanks to clever twists by the author. The murderer turned out to be the last person I ever suspected.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the advanced copy of this amazing book.
The story of “His And Her”has 2 main characters and is told from 2 different sides so you know someone is lying. We have Detective Chief Inspector Jack Harper head of major crime in Blackdown in Surrey. He left the MET after a tragedy and is now investigating a murder in a small rural town called blackdown. The victim is a woman he recognises and knows very well, this is a secret he will have to keep or he will end up being a suspect.
The other character is Anna Andrews, Jack’s ex wife who eventually got her dream job of presenting the 1pm UK news but now her job is at risk and she doesn’t want to give it up that easily. She reluctantly returns to her Home town of Blackdown to report a murder and she soon finds out that the victim is one of Anna’s childhood friends and her life soon starts to unravel out of control and she doesn’t know who she can trust.
This is a fast paced thriller which is well written. I am usually pretty good at predicting how the book will end, but this book had one almighty twist at the end which I never saw coming.
Well worth a read.
I’d to think NetGalley for giving me an advance copy of this book in return for an unbiased review
I was lucky enough to get sent a copy of ‘His & Hers’, Alice Feeney’s new psychological thriller, before its publication date, in exchange for an honest review 🤓📚
AND WOAHHHH WHAT A DARK, SPINE CHILLING, DYSFUNCTIONAL, DISTURBING, CREEPY THRILL RIDE EXPERIENCE. SO INTENSE. AMAZING. THIS IS ONE OF THOSE BOOKS WHERE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE SUPERGLUED TO THE STORY (so fuckin invested) RIGHT UP UNTIL IT ENDS !!!!!
‘His & Hers’ sets the scene with the POV’s a recently divorced couple who may be linked to the murder victims in a small town murder investigation, with really clever overlaps of the truth between the different sides and an extremely believable yet incredibly unreliable narration. Psychological thrillers are my genre of choice, so normally I can guess a good twist or at least predict what direction a story is going … BUT WITH THIS BOOK !!!!!!!!! I HAD NO IDEA WHAT THE FUCK WAS GOING ON RIGHT UP UNTIL THE LAST SCENE. I guessed, thought I knew the twist, then maybe not, second guessed, third guessed, thought I had it with the fourth guess. Honestly I was wrong every single time, it made a complete rookie out of me. It was fabulous. The plot twists were seriously so original.
This book will really appeal to those who are BIG FANS of extremely twisty and f’d up books like Blood Orange and Behind Closed Doors, but I would recommend it to anyone who wants a real intense read with an unputdownable book, it’s released on May 28th !!!!! PREORDER AT ONCE. #HisandHers #NetGalley
I absolutely devoured this book! I have loved everything I have read by Alice, and this was no exception. It was brutal and emotional and some of it was very uncomfortable reading. 5 stars!
I loved this book!
Shambolic DCI Jack Harpur, His closed-off, newsreader, ex-wife Anna Andrews.
A well drawn cast of memorable characters.
This is a book to savour, I had to slow myself down in order to make it last longer.
Full of twists and turns up to the very last page.
Wow, so much of this book you are convinced you know what is going on. Then you realise you may be wrong, and then wrong again and then you just aren't too sure with a cracking curve ball at the end!
A must read!
This is the first book I have read by Alice Feeney, and enjoyed the plot with all its twists and turns which kept me gripped until the last page.
Newsreader Anna Andrews is sent to a small town to cover the murder of a local woman, someone she knew in the past. The detective in charge of the case is her ex-husband, Jake Harper. They meet again with Anna covering the story and Jake in charge of solving the case, and it’s obvious that there is unresolved history between them.
The book is mainly told from two perspectives – Jake and Anna each telling their own version of events. Anna’s difficult childhood has led her to drink, which she needs to keep going. There is mystery surrounding her past, her relationships with family and friendships, which gradually unfold throughout the story.
Although at first it seems obvious who committed the crime, you question whether they actually did it, or whether there is another suspect involved. Several twists and turns heighten the tension, with crisp, sharp dialogue making this a gripping, compelling read. The pace increases as you reach the final pages. I couldn’t put this book down until all was revealed. A great thriller, recommended
Alice Feeney
Wow another fabulous captivating, edge of seat story from Alice Feeney. This thriller had my head spinning so many times as I tried to decipher who the killer was.
Anna Andrews has worked hard to get the job she loves, Television presenter of the BBC lunchtime news. So when she is forced back into her role as a reporter she is not happy especially as her first assignment is to cover a murder in her childhood home of Blackdown. This place holds lots of memories for Anna and not all of them good. Her estranged Mother still lives there and Anna discovers that her ex-husband DCI Jack Harper not only has been visiting her mother but is also leading the investigation on the murder case.
This eerie, dark tale is full of suspense that makes for an excellent attention holding read.
My thanks to Net Galley for the ARC digital copy of this super book.
Alice Feeney has written a cracking twister with His and Hers. Anna Andrews a newsreader and correspondant is sent to cover a murder only to find her ex. DCIJack Harper is investigating. The plot thickens when they discover the victim is someone they both know. A brilliant read.
His & Hers -by Alice Feeney
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the storyline from the first page until the last. It was so well written it really kept me on my toes just wondering what was going to happen next. For me this was the perfect thriller as I didn’t guess the ending! I would most definitely recommend this book to both family and friends. This is the second book I have read by Feeney and I will defo read more in the future.
Many thanks to net galley and the author for the opportunity to read this book.
I absolutely loved how twisty this book is. I found the writing style very engaging and it was hard to put down once I'd started. There was a lot going on which sometimes can be confusing but I really enjoyed seeing how all the plot threads tied together.
I liked how the author didn't shy away from getting a bit gory with the murder scenes. I do however hate it when an adorable pet is introduced as I know it never ends well for them in psychological thrillers.
The unedited version was a little bit confusing as the killer's narrations weren't given headings so it looked like what they were saying was from Jack and Anna's point of view still. I was halfway through the book before I realised that wasn't the case!
I really enjoyed the book and would 100% recommend it
I enjoyed this book a lot! It was a really good story line that kept me reading and I thought the main characters were done really well. Highly recommended
Praise for Alice Feeney
I'm due to be part of the blog tour for this fantastic book (postponed due to everything that is happening right now)
So I feel I need to spread the book love now and tell you just how amazing this novel is so that you feel compelled to pre-order instantly.
This woman is a fantastic story teller.
I was kept guessing throughout the book, fooled more than once.
The narrative is fantastic.
It seems that there could be more than 2 sides to a story ....
This wasn't quite was I was expecting, perhaps I misread the blurb but I was expecting this to be more of a psychological thriller between a couple and the reader being fed lies/truth from both sides. Instead, it's more of a crime thriller with the story told from two opposing point of views of an estranged couple.
It's a good concept and the story moves along nicely. There are a few red herrings thrown in throughout, and the ending is rather ominous. I wasn't particularly keen on any of the characters however, and a few things just didn't really add up.
Overall, a decent read but best if you leave critical appraisal at the door and not think too much about a lot of the absurdity.
Wow loved this book and did not see the ending coming at all. I had in my mind that one of the girls was the murderer and then she was killed leading up to who I thought must have been the one. It must be a cutthroat business in tv and that comes across – women vying for superiority. Anna is the main character and is trying to get onto a newreaders slot and manages to do this. Her ex husband Jack is in the Police Force and when the murders start in the town where she grew up they are forced together through circumstances have divorced in tragic circumstances. They are tetchy with each other but eventually come to terms with having to deal with each other and their sadness at the loss of their child. Jack does not trust Anna and feels she is keeping secrets. Priya, Jack’s sidekick in the Police, does not trust either of them and goes out of her way to implicate either of them on the evidence which does not work and she becomes difficult to work with. I loved the characters and felt all 5 teenage friends could have been the one who committed the crimes which shows how well the book was written. Cannot praise this book enough – thank you Netgalley as always for great reads
This is the second novel I have read by Alice Feeney and I thoroughly enjoyed it. ‘His and Hers’ was a brilliant read and written, as expected, from two viewpoints although, at times, it is not clear who him and her really are.
The story begins with the murder of a woman in a small village, Blackdown. Newsreader Anna Andrews is sent to cover the case and her husband, DCI Jack Harper is leading the investigation. It is a woman they both knew from school days. This is where they both used to live and where they grew up. It is clear from the beginning that there are lies and deceit from all those involved.
Everyone is flawed with secrets to keep and the author ensures that there is enough underlying doubt that anybody could be responsible for the murders. All the characters are realistically portrayed and the plot twists and turns all the way until the end.
Thank you to NetGally, HQ, General Fiction Adult and Alice Feeney for my ARC in return for my honest review.
Great read and highly recommended.
When a woman is murdered in Blackdown village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Anna’s ex-husband, DCI Jack Harper, is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone is lying, and some secrets are worth killing to keep.
'His and Hers' is a thrill a minute read! Feeney lures us into a false sense of security, the beginning is fairly slow but still intense and I could tell Feeney was building up the tension. What I did not anticipate were how many twists and red herrings Feeney would throw in along the way! I did not see the ending coming at all and I love it when an author catches me unawares.
Feeney writes this from the perspective of her and him, this is a really intriguing way of writing as the reader works out who her and him could be, I loved the style and it added another layer of intrigue to the read. I should warn you this book is gruesome and there are scenes that some may find uncomfortable. This aside, I adored the plot, it reminded me of M J Arlidge's works in a way. I was completely taken in by this read, addicted to the dark goings on and in love with Feeney's delicious, devilish ways of writing an enthralling read.
Anna and Jack are two wonderful characters as well. They are likeable but Feeney throws in a sufficient amount of doubt to make the reader question whether they are who they say they are or if they are hiding a multitude of secrets. They are flawed and vulnerable as well and I simply loved following them as they negotiate their way through the crimes they find themselves faced with.
'His and Hers' is a twisting, shocking and riveting read and another stellar read from Feeney.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for an advance copy.
