His and Hers by Alice Feeney
I give this book 4 stars
There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying.
One of them knows more than they are letting on. Someone isn’t telling the truth.......
Wow this book had me gripped right from the start, a fast paced page turner that l couldn't put down.A plot that is tense, twisty, absorbing and dark all at the same time.
The narrative develops and unwinds unexpectedly and kept me guessing to the very end!
I loved it,highly recommended.
With thanks to Netgalley, the Author and the Publisher for my chance to read and review this book.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another fabulous read from Alice Feeney. An excellent thriller-full of twists and turns with a fabulous ending. Recommended.
I’ve seen so many rave reviews for this book and so many of my friends enjoyed it but I just did not like this book. I was determined to finish it as I did want to find out what happened in the end but I thought the outcome was unbelievable and slightly far fetched. There was so many little details throughout the book that just made the whole book rather predictable and then towards the end things started to happen one after the other and honestly I was just left thinking what on earth have I just read. I really didn’t like the background story of what happened between Anna and her “friends”. I didn’t find that the storyline gripped me, I got quite bored of it at about 30% through and I just found everything that happened in the book far too convenient and coincidental. The animal cruelty in this book was triggering and just so unnecessary. The format of the kindle copy I had recieved didn’t make it clear there was a third “unknown” narrator, I only found this out after I download the audiobook. After this book I don’t think I want want to read more by this author.
With thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for the arc, which I have enjoyed reading.
His and Hers by Alice Feeney is a very clever psychological thriller, with many twists and turns to keep the reader intrigued. It was when I was near the end of the book that I realised just how clever the storyline was, there were many snippets and clues along the way and the reader could only guess who they believed the killer really was.
I enjoyed the structure of the plot and enjoyed reading the book, some of the characters were extremely nasty people and others were ready made victims in their teenage years.
Highly recommended
This read is so gripping. I kept thinking I knew who the killer was and definitely got it wrong. The big twist at the end was really good and one I didn’t see coming. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good fast paced thriller.
Had high hopes for this and wanted to read it because I had heard it was being made into a TV series. I can definitely see it would make a good TV series but as a book I felt it dragged and although it was interesting it didn't grip me.
I read Alice Feeney’s debut novel, Sometimes I Lie three years ago and loved it. His and Hers is her third book and just like her first book I was utterly gripped by it and compelled to read it, puzzled and amazed by the cleverness of the plot. It’s a standalone psychological thriller.
The narrative moves between two characters ‘Him’, Jack Harper and ‘Her’, Anna Andrews and there is also a third narrator, the unnamed killer. Anna lives in London, working for the BBC. She grew up in Blackdown, and is an alcoholic, who is still recovering from a recent tragedy that pushed her to drink. Jack is a Detective Chief Inspector, who has recently moved to Blackdown from London to be in charge of the Major Crime Team based in Surrey. He knows Blackdown well as he also grew up there and Anna is his ex wife.
There is so much ambiguity and misdirection that there were times when I thought the killer could just as easily be Jack, or Anna, or one of the other characters – and wondered just which one was the narrator. More murders follow after that first one. But these are not random killings – and it’s soon apparent that the victims are all connected. They had all been at to the same school and had been guests at Anna’s sixteenth birthday party.
I read it quickly, suspending my disbelief and disliking most of the main characters – they really are downright nasty – cheating, lying, manipulating and abusing others, bullying and blackmailing them. – and worse. It kept me guessing throughout, changing my mind about the culprit, or culprits, as I read on. It’s not a comfortable read, dark and twisted with some gruesomely graphic scenes, which is why I’m giving this book 4 stars instead of 5. It’s one of those books I didn’t really like, but I did enjoy working out the puzzle of who could be trusted, who to be wary of and most of all who was doing the murders.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publishers HQ for an ARC.
This is a pacey and engaging book which kept me guessing... and then second guessing!
The narrative offers the perspectives of both Anna and Jack, two exes with links to a woman who is murdered. However, there is another, third, narrator who is the perpetrator. What we don't know is whether this is Anna or Jack, or another unknown person.
Anna's and Jack's recollections of events on the evening of the murder are somewhat hindered as there are gaps in their memories. This means we can't trust either of them. Two unreliable narrators is definitely something to contend with!! I did find that I had to suspend disbelief that both narrators had such gaps in their memory though.
As Anna's childhood memories emerge, we find out more about the connections between the characters, and potential motivations for the murder. As a result, I would guess something, and then find out more from the past that changed my guess!!
There are some great reveals and twists. The main "twist" is something I did guess but not too much in advance of the reveal.
I'll definitely be reading more books by this author.
Thanks to Netgalley and HQ for access to this great book.
Alice Feeney’s best book yet. This kept me gripped all the way through so gripped I read it in a day! and the ending.... well , I don’t want to ruin anything!
Oh the excitement of another Alice Feeney novel 🙊 And it absolutely did not disappoint. The problem with a Feeney novel is you must have enough time to sit and read from cover to cover, so I'd recommend a nice chilled bottle of 🍾, some moreish nibbles, a comfy sofa or garden chair, and don't allow anyone or anything to disturb you through yet more intriguing prose, more twists and complexity that will have you gripped, of course with Feeney's trademark OMFG reaction by the end. If psych thrillers are your thing, you will not waste any precious life by reading this because you'll be breathless by the end. An excellent way to escape this 'new' world we live in.
When a woman is murdered in her hometown Anna Andrew's reluctantly returns to cover the story for the BBC. Not only has she left behind secrets but she still has a few there. Like she knows the victim and the investigating DCI Jack Harper. And that she knows a few people with a motive to be the killer, herself been one of them. Her ex husband been another.
His and Hers flips between three narratives. Anna's, Jack's and the murderer. Who might be Anna or Jack. Or might not be. Or could be? Who knows? Well sadly I did, fairly early on. There was a moment I thought I'd got it wrong but then I hadn't. Which is why I've only rated it 3 stars. It's enjoyable but just not very surprising. I loved Alice Feeneys first novel, unfortunately so far she has lived up to that early promise yet.
Who did it? I asked myself that a few times while reading this brilliant story, that I could not put down. I loved this writing and characters that you got to know so you wondered what they were each capable of. I was surprised at the ending and I'm sure you will be.
I loved this book, good storyline, every time you think you have the killer you realise you don’t. Great book, look forward to reading more from this great author
Thank you to HQ Stories for my invitation to the Blogger Takeover and for my copy of the book in return for a fair and honest review.
I read I Know Who You Are last year and I was hooked, so when I saw Alice Feeney had a new book out, I knew I had to read it.
Written from His, Jack local DCI, and Her’s Anna, TV Presenter/ Reporter perspectives, you are immediately drawn into this twisty tale. Plus there is someone else recounting their story.
Both are hiding secrets, they have a history and there is not much love lost between them now and they find themselves working on a murder of a women discovered in woods.
Anna has had a tough time and drinks to help her cope, she loses her TV presenting job and is thrown back to reporting. Meeting up with her ex Jack is the last thing she needs.
The body is that of a woman called Rachel, who is she ? and what do Anna and Jack know about her?
They separated due to a tragedy and neither have been able to move on. All though on the surface they look like they have.
This is another great book by the author, you will struggle to put it down as each chapter leaves you wanting to find out more. I had no trust in any of the narrators which made it all the more exciting to read.
Finally, wait for that twist this author really knows how to deliver an excellent fast
This is a great read which kept me guessing throughout. I enjoyed the story from 2 perspectives. Some difficult scenes to read and some truly awful characters but a very cleverly written book. I really enjoyed this and would recommend to my girlfriends
An intriguing read throughout. Just when you think you know who has done what you then discover you are completely wrong. This is certainly the kind of book I enjoy. I disliked the characters but that did not spoil the enjoyment if anything it added to it
Just Wow!!! What a book! I really can't justify just how good this was. I was gripped from the start and was constantly changing my mind who the killer was. The ending was a total shock to me and I love that in a thriller. It was never predictable and constantly kept me on my toes. It was dark and brutal and oh so good! Gah I want to read it all over again and I've only just finished it! This was my first Alice Feeney book and if they are all as good as this it won't be my last.
This is the first book I have read from this author and it turned out to be an interesting read. This book had some great twists. The book is told from different narratives which gives you more than one side to a story.
This really is one of those reads that leaves you guessing the whole way through.
Although early on in the book it felt a little slow, it certainly picked up the pace and turned into a great interesting read.
Another brilliant book by the talented Alice Feeney! I love how dark and creepy her books are with so many twists and turns, I really thought I had guessed the killer but nope! The story is about Anna who is a journalist and is sent back to her hometown when a young woman's body is found. Things go from bad to worse when Anna realises that the murdered woman is a school friend and then another woman from the same school gang is also murdered and Anna fears for her safety...will she be next???
Brilliant!
Thank you NetGalley and HQ for the advanced copy of this book.
This is the first book I have read by Alice Feeney and it certainly won’t be the last.
What a book, told from two, three or possibly four narratives, it was difficult to decide, but the book had you guessing all the way through. I did find it a bit slow to start, but once it got going couldn’t put it down. Who was the murderer I didn’t guess until very near the end. Lots of twists and turns, characters you either love or dislike – wouldn’t say hate. Well written and a different plot for once.
Highly recommend
