Lots of twists and turns in this story. Very difficult to decide on the perpetrator. Non stop action with well described characters and a compulsive storyline. Great read.
This twisty, exhilarating thriller had me guessing and then second guessing the whole time, as it stampeded along. As soon as saw this novel I knew it had to be read, and it certainly did not disappoint.
I thoroughly enjoyed His & Hers, a deeply engrossing tale of mystery, duplicity and suspense. The book is narrated mostly from two viewpoints. Anna Andrews is a key TV presenter and news reporter working for the BBC. Her ex-husband, DCI Jack Harper is the lead detective in the investigation of a woman found murdered in Blackdown, Surrey, a quintessential old English area which is both Jack's and Anna's home town. When Anna is asked to cover the story, she is reluctant at first, but agrees. Then the victim is found to be an old school friend of Anna's, so she is unable to leave as she is right in the middle of the action, but is no longer covering the story. For his part, Jack has chosen to keep the fact that he also knew the young woman to himself, until he realises he is a suspect...
Alice Feeney has a very appealing style of writing and the characters she created were very believable, giving me a great sense of apprehensiveness and foreboding. I was immediately questioning the characters motives as they were both so secretive, and connected to the crime in some way, making for some exceptionally nerve-racking reading. I found His & Hers totally riveting, the various unfolding of events and revelations making this book even more absorbing. The story-line was absolutely fantastic and the suspense was kept at a maximum level throughout. In this tense tale of betrayal, alcoholism, bullying, domestic abuse, and other particularly unpleasant themes such as rape, paedophilia and animal cruelty Alice Feeney eventually wraps everything up very neatly in a thrilling, fulfilling and satisfying ending.
Although this drama thriller was horrific in places, it was still an absolute pleasure to read. Even if the plot had been less stimulating I would have devoured these pages with equal gusto and enthusiasm. I’ll certainly be looking out for more from Alice Feeney!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request, from HQ via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
I enjoyed Alice Feeneys last book and so was looking forward to this one.. it didn’t disappoint.
A dark thriller with lots of twists and turns.
I was hooked from the beginning.
Really enjoyed
The first book I have read by Alice Feeney, and it certainly won't be my last - I have already added her previous books to my to read pile. His and Hers is a dark, twisted thriller that keeps you guessing right till the end.
The book is told from the points of view of Anna, a journalist sent to cover the murder of a woman in the town she grew up in, and her ex husband Jack who is the DCI in charge of the case, interspersed with the perspective of the unknown murderer.. As the chapters alternate, you realise how much both the main characters are unreliable narrators, both of them keeping secrets, and you find yourself constantly changing your mind as to what you think is happening and who is telling the truth. The characters are complex, the setting dark and atmospheric and the twists keep coming - this book kept me on the edge of my seat as it careered towards an entirely unexpected ending.
I struggled with this book and found it very confusing about who was who and who was doing what. It failed to keep my interest.
I found this a really easy read; I read it over two evenings.
It was fast paced and I didn’t guess the twist at all. I was left wondering how believable it was but when taken into account with the rest of the novel it made sense. It revolves around revenge, the idea of family and the dismissive nature of the characters.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters, but I assume this was deliberate due to their actions and dialogue.
I felt sorry for Anna sporadically throughout the novel but then would dislike her again in the next chapter.
The murders were graphic and well thought out with the actual murders interweaved with the overarching theme of friendship.
I enjoyed and would recommend.
What a fabulous tale full of twists and turns !
Anna is hanging on to her job by a thread at the BBC when she is given an assignment to report on a murder in her home town-Jack her ex-husband is the lead detective on the case and is not happy to see her.
Then the deaths start piling up .
Each chapter is written from either Jack or Anna's point of view and you are sure you know who did it -until the next chapter when you completely change your mind again!
Loved it !
Thank you Net Galley for an ARC in return for an honest review
My Review
I do enjoy this author I must admit....
Her books are a cracking read.....
His and Hers I absolutely loved....
I think for me it was her two characters Jack and Anna in this tale. I really enjoyed the underlying tension between these two throughout the book.....
I was sucked in immediately by the antagonizing banter between the two of them so much so that I didn't want to leave the story down at all....
We meet DCI Jack Harper and his ex-wife Anna Andrews. There is a world of hurt between the two of them and you can almost see it oozing out of their pores..
Beneath it all is the devastating death of their daughter at three months old..
When a woman is murdered with Jack having spent time in her company the previous evening, it makes him prime suspect for her murder.
I enjoyed how the story was told alternating between his and her chapters giving great perspective of the story from both sides....
Everything you want in a good psychological thriller....
You can feel they are not telling the truth....but who has more to hide...
Author Alice Feeney will have you guessing to the very end but that's what you want really isn't it....
Absolutely loved it and so very well worth your time...
I loved Alice Feeney’s debut novel Sometimes I Lie and this is a return to form! His and Hers follows Anna, an ambitious TV news reporter, and her ex-husband Jack, a police detective in alternating chapters. I found this such a fun read as seeing things from each of their points of view and realising that one of them might have set the other one up made for such a fast-paced read! I kept changing my mind about who I thought was behind the murders, and ultimately whilst I did guess how it was going to end it didn’t spoilt how good of a read this was. It was such a rollercoaster ride and I very much enjoyed it. I can’t wait to read whatever Alice Feeney writes next but in the meantime I recommend this book!
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for this copy of this book!❤️
Also thanks to Alice Feeney for writing this book❤️
In a few different perspectives,
Follows Anna who's world is crumbling before her, she has a job as news reporter for the BBC, but the person she was replacing came bacl Anna was sent else where she gets sent to Blackdown Village her home town to report on a murder of a local lady of the village, she gets freaked out when her ex husband is the senior officer leading the investigation but why does he have connections to the woman?...
You must read to find out!!
This is such a fast paced, thrilling and gripping book, mg first Alice Feeney book but I definitely recommend as I loved all the perspectives and the twists turns and mystery with a heart clenching and shocking reveal...

I was sent a copy of His and Hers by Alice Feeney to read and review by NetGalley.
What a brilliant book! It’s a real page turner with lots of surprizes along the way. I was a bit confused at one point when the end of a chapter seemed to be out of place but then I realized that there was a pattern that aided misdirection and kept you guessing right to the end. I don’t really want to say anything about the plot itself, just to say that the novel is well written with some great characters and I found myself often swapping allegiance throughout the book. If you are partial to a crime thriller that you can’t put down then I wholeheartedly recommend this one!
This is my first novel by Alice Feeney and oh boy it won't be my last. His and Hers is a cleverly woven plot of deceit, twists and lies that kept me on the edge of my seat all the way through.
This is the story of a woman's body found in the woods told by a divorced couple Anna and Jack with a few scattered chapters from the killer. What's interesting is that all the chapters have a similar feel to them, it's difficult to tie the narrator to a known character as there are elements of different characters in there.
The novel is narrated from the perspectives of Anna Andrews and her ex husband. Both narrators seemingly have things to hide, making them unreliable and not trustworthy at all. The short chapters build tension throughout the novel and the first person narrative really helps the reader climb inside the characters and see things from their perspective.
Neither Anna or Jack or completely likable which makes the game of guessing very cleverly written and much more fun. The more you learn about them, the more I found myself pulled in two directions. I did develop some empathy towards the characters but as darker things were revealed it became hard to know what to feel.As I didn't feel any affinity with either character, I was suspicious of both and my thoughts about things were constantly changing. Constant red herrings, possible clues and more twists than a game of 21, this novel kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end.
A darkly twisted novel that will keep you reading until the very end.
Anna Andrews: a regular fixture on the one o'clock news programme - well, she has been since the early departure of regular newsreader Cat Jones, whose maternity leave started somewhat earlier than planned. Anna loves her job, it's the lynchpin in her life, the thing that keeps her otherwise chaotic existence together. So when she is suddenly deposed by the return of Cat and finds herself back in her old job out in the field of newsgathering, she's none too happy. She wants her glamorous job behind the camera back -but how far will she go to get it?
DCI Jack Harper, early 40s, unmarried and unhappy in the place he finds himself in life: sharing a home with a nagging woman and a demanding 2 year old. He has landed up back in Blackdown, his childhood home after his promising career in the Met hit the skids and life unceremoniously landed him back where he started.
The two characters lives collide when Anna is sent to do a live broadcast in Blackdown following the discovery of a woman's body. The detective in charge is Jack - who we then discover happens to be Anna's ex-husband. They have years of history together and their previous relationship leads to much sparring between the pair.
The chapters alternate between His and Hers points of view as it soon becomes obvious that both of them know the victim of the murder case. Titbits of information dropped by each of them lead the reader to wonder just how much the pair know about the crime. There's also a mysterious anonymous voice which drops in every now and then - each time more intriguing than the last.
By about 90% through this book I had at least 4 or 5 suspects lined up as the possible killer. There are layers of history woven through the story which lead you one way then another but absolutely none of them gave away the final conclusion to the book. I really did not see the identity of the murderer coming and felt completely bamboozled when the reveal was made.
One of my top reads of the year so far, there are certain triggers in this book to be aware of. There's bullying, alcoholism, and grooming all going on but not in a sufficiently shocking way that would make the reader want to put the book down in my opinion. Definitely one I would recommend to crime-thriller readers everywhere.

Another great read by Alice Feeney. This book is a real page turner, a dark and twisty thriller which kept me guessing throughout. Definitely one to add to the bookshelf. Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Exactly as I have come to expect from this author - well written, gripping and with as huge twist that takes your breath away. Very highly recommended.
The characters in this book were introduced well and I feel that they were well rounded for the reader to make a decision on how they feel about them.
I struggled with the amount of information that was being withheld, for example there were several subjects that were about "when that happened" and then you wouldn't find out what it was relating to until later on in the book. Ordinarily this wouldn't be an issue for me but because there were so subjects that took the same route, what happened with Rachel, what happened with the baby, why Anna didn't like Zoe etc.
Other than that I thought the plot was well considered though a little bit confusing. Though I think this was the intention. It is only when you get to the very end of the story that you know what has happened throughout. I couldn't guess who the killer was at any point in the book which made it an enjoyable read.
Overall very good and enjoyed the read.
My thanks to HQ for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘His and Hers’ by Alice Feeney in exchange for an honest review.
“There are at least two sides to every story; yours and mine, ours and theirs, his and hers. I always prefer my own. But maybe it’s for the best, that no one else ever knows the truth about what really happened.” - mysterious voice over.
For the past two years Anna Andrews has been very happy presenting the BBC One lunch time news bulletin while her predecessor was on double maternity leave. But then Cat Jones returns to her post and Anna has to take up her old position as a news correspondent. Bummer!
Her first assignment is to cover the murder of a woman in the small Surrey town of Blackdown. She is reluctant to go as Blackdown is where she grew up and her mother still resides there. Her mother is suffering from dementia and Anna has been avoiding her due to a family tragedy.
Making it more awkward is that Anna’s ex-husband, DCI Jack Harper, also lives there and is investigating the murder. If that wasn’t bad enough, Jack and the dead woman knew each other (in the Biblical sense) and this naturally could place Jack in a precarious position if it becomes known. Add to this Anna also knew the dead woman when they were teenagers when they briefly attended the same school.
Certainly ‘His and Hers’ was entertaining and kept me guessing as to whodunnit. However, I did feel that there were times when the number of coincidences, red herrings, and twists in this novel strained credibility and entered sensationalist territory.
I will also note that there were a few distressing scenes including of sexual assault, bullying and animal cruelty. Anna also is a semi-functioning alcoholic, merrily quaffing from miniature bottles that she hoards in her likely clanking handbag; though she’s not quite as bad as some characters I have encountered in psychological thrillers as she has no blackouts (if she’s to be believed).
I know that the announcements tagged onto some television shows about ‘if you’ve been effected by any of the issues depicted ....’ might seem lame but recognising the seriousness of certain themes in fiction and the effect they can have is important.
So, the lack of any acknowledgement regarding these themes along with the sensationalist, twist for twists sake of this novel brought it down in terms of ratings for me.
Looking back at my review for her last novel, ‘I Know Who You Are’, I had actually noted similar concerns especially around too many red herrings and lack of trigger warnings (or even acknowledgment of distressing themes).
So 3.5 stars rounded down to 3.
This is a fabulous thriller- super fast paced with lots of twists and turns. Anna is a newsreader who comes back to her childhood village to report on the murder of an old friend- meanwhile Anna’s ex husband- and police officers- is suspicious of Anna’s involvement, but Anna is equally suspicious of his. Someone is telling lies but who ? A brilliant new take on the murder mystery thriller.
If there are two sides to every story, someone is always lying…
Anna is a successful newsreader and on the face of it appears to have the perfect life, but things aren't what they seem. DCI Jack Harper is a detective who has been called on to investigate a murder in Anna's childhood hometown of Blackdown, and this case brings them back together when she is asked to report on the case, neither of them aware at first that they know the victim, but it soon becomes obvious they're more involved than what was first thought. But who is telling the truth and who is lying?
The story is told from two perspectives; His and Hers and the author has so cleverly executed how the two versions of events link into one another that I was second guessing all the way through as to who was in fact telling the truth, we also go back to when they were younger and learn the background of their childhoods and how certain things that happened shaped them into the people they have become.
This book is fast paced, full of secrets, truths, lies and more twists than a helter-skelter and you really need to concentrate on the small things because they are what make the big things make sense. This is the second book I've read by this author and I didn't think she could top Sometimes I Lie but she smashed this one right out of the park! I highly recommend.
I'd like to thank HQ and Netgalley for the approval and will post my review on Goodreads and Amazon.
Anna and Jack tell the story of the woman found in the woods in alternating chapters, punctuated by the italicised thoughts of the killer.
Tiny clues are dripped through the narratives so you feel, as the reader, that you are solving this puzzling disappearance, and death, at the same time as Jack and Anna are. Their fraught relationship and split is gradually revealed, adding layers of nuance and tragedy on top of the past which is dragged kicking and screaming into the light by this murder.
Both are suspects, for various reasons, and yet both are trying to desperately solve the murder-one because of guilt and the other because their professional career depends upon it.
The way that events of the past twist and turn, at the same time as hastily unravelling, provides the reader not with merely an engaging mystery, it focuses on how an individual deals with trauma, grief and death in so many different ways. The impact on the rest of your lives by the calculated acts of another is heartbreaking and vividly rendered-your emotions fly back and forth from anger to horror as the true weight of Jack and Anna's burdens are laid bare....
As a thriller, this is definitely one that keeps you reading past your bedtime-that alone would be enough. But the added mystery of which one-if indeed, either is-lying, really deconstructs the trope of an unreliable narrator , re-assembling it in Alice Feeney's distinctive style.
It was a huge pleasure to read 'His & Hers', it is definitely a book I would recommend picking up!
