A great idea for a cookbook that can inspire millions of budding home chefs who want to make healthier choices!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
In “Fakeaways” Dale Pinnock takes the home cook on a journey around the world.
During the various lockdowns, I have had ample opportunity to delight the family with a number of dishes from this book.
The recipes are well written, easy to follow and cater to even the pickiest of eaters.
I was impressed, that most of the recipes did not require tweaking and worked straight out of the book.
My favourite section was the “Family feasts”, instant 3 course meals.
Fantastic and easy to follow recipes, this is the 3rd Dale Pinnock book I've read and I love them all.I
The ingredients are normal things that you can buy and the ones I've cooked are easy and tasty.
Thank you netgalley
I haven't heard about the author before requesting this book, although it seems he already is an accomplished writer of books about healthy cooking.
I was positively impressed by this title for the following reasons:
- most of the recipes look enticing, they are so well chosen that I would actually like to cook them all. Usually with cookbooks maybe a half are really interesting, the rest seem a bit of a filler or a way to show diversity.
- the book is structured by the type of takeaway cuisine: Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Japanese, Middle Eastern and Grill&Classics
- the ingredient list is simple and kept to a minimum.
- the recipes seem to be a much healthier version of the food you normally order from takeaways. If that compromises on the flavor I still have to check as I haven't cooked anything yet.
- at the end of the book there is a fest section where the author proposes a complete menu for entertaining guests or if you really hungry.
I did not see any downsides for now, but I have to try some of the recipes to decide if this book deserves more stars. I noted a few that I want to start with and I will come back to this review after I will experiment with them .
Many thanks to Netgalley and Octopus Publishing for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Mmmmmm this is the best one of these I've read so far! Dale splits into into various areas of cuisine and it really works. Can't wait to cook a whole bunch.
I've seen this author on ITV before, so was interested to see what recipes he could provided in the 'fakeaway'.
This book is divided into 7 main chapters:
- Indian
- Chinese
- Italian
- Japanese
- Middle Eastern
- Thai
- Grills & Classics
The book starts with providing nutrition information on the main takeaway, and then the cost savings between a takeaway and home made.
all the recipes have colour photography, tell you how long they take to prepare and cook, how many people it serves, the ingredients in metric measurements and easy to follow steps. However, it does not provide any nutritional information, and number of the recipes used wholewheat pasta but I was expecting it to be darker as the photo showed it to be the normal shade.
The last chapter covers Family Feasts which takes 4 recipes from the previous 7 chapters and brings a meal together for the family, be it an Indian, Chinese or other meal. Though there seems to be a lot of food there, so it would probably do more than a family of four.
I received this book from Netgalley in return for a honest review.
A great book with excellent easy to read recipes! Great for beginner chefs and a healthy alternative to a takeaway. We have tried a few out and all the ones we have had so far have been delicious
Dale Pinnock Fakeaways by Dale Pinnock is a wonderful and delicious looking set of recipes. The recipes are easy to follow and look wonderful. The photos are colourful and make the food look yummy.
This is an amazing recipe book!! I cannot wait to make all the things in this book. The recipes are very simple to follow and are accompanied by vibrant saliva inducing pictures. The book is broken down into different cuisines and there's a wide variety of dishes to suit all different tastes. One of the most useful and interesting parts is it has grouped together dishes of the same cuisine to form feasts and has a full ingredient less for all the dishes. Perfect for those who want to be a bit healthier but still have some of their previous favourites from the takeaway.
Delicious!
I'm a big Dale Pinnock fan so was excited to try some of these dishes and was not disappointed.
If you love your takeaways and are prepared to put in a bit of effort to make the similar meal, it really is well worth it.
Highly recommended to all!
Thank you Octopus Publishing and NetGalley.

Big Thank you to Netgalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Having researched it, there are lots of these books out there, but this was my first read of this type of cookbook and I enjoyed it.
All recipes are twists or versions of common and popular takeaways - recipes to make them at home.
First of all, you save a lot of money (according to the book, you save the most on Grills and Japanese takeaway, which is about a quarter of the price if you make it yourself).
Of course, you can make said recipes healthier that their takeaway counterparts, which takes out the bad conscience of ordering out.
The number of meat, fish, vegetarian or vegan recipes of course reflect the type of food you find on the takeaway menus. The best ones for vegetarians are Indian, Italian and Middle Eastern, for fish lovers Japanese and Thai, and for meat eaters the Grills.
Overall I definitely enjoyed it. I would have liked a little note on how to vary each recipe (for example taking out meat or replacing an ingredient which isn't easy to find), but otherwise it makes you want to get started then and there!
I liked some of the recipes but the majority listed too many ingredients that I just don't have at home. I was kind of hoping for recipes that are more easily prepared with ingredients I already have at home.
I really liked the look of this book and it started with a great introduction explaining the nutritional and financial benefits of cooking your own favourite takeaway food at home.
The book covers a range of different cuisines from Indian to Thai to Middle Eastern. Ste has been looking for a tikka masala recipe for a while and he was really impressed with this one!
The recipes are easy to follow with different tips and the photos are mouth-wateringly good! At the end there is a 'feast' section, where it gives you an idea of which recipes and foods to put together to host a family meal for each cuisine.
As an ostomate I can sometimes struggle with takeaway food as it can contain some ingredients I cannot have. With this book I am able to switch those items with something else or just leave them out all together while still enjoying them!
Yum yum . What a fantastic collection of recipes.
We as a family have been looking for a healthier way to eat. And enjoy what we eat. And who doesn’t love a takeaway. However, these day they are heavy on the wallet and on the waist.
Dale Pinnock has put together a brilliant collection of recipes. There’s something in the book for the whole family. Once you have your collection of spices and sauces, then there’s nothing you can’t attempt.
The majority of the recipes can be achieved in a quicker time than it takes for your normal takeaway to be delivered.
The book is very easy to follow with big colourful photos. This weekend I will certainly be trying some of these offerings.
Well worth the 5 stars

I really enjoyed this cookbook and found all the extra information on things like trans fats, msgs and the information about the cost savings of making your own Fakeaway.

Having gone through the ingredients listed and the cooking instructions I didn't feel that anything was out of my comfort zone and in all honesty everything looks absolutely delicious. I'm always looking for ways to make my dinners healthier and lighter. This book can help you to do this, the dish I am most excited to try is the lasagne.
Some of the stand out recipes to me and that I have added to my dinner list this week

Aubergine Parmigiana
Chicken Katsu Curry

Kould be Fried Chicken.
and Roasted Ribs

I think I want to try everything in this book, it’s bright, appealing and attractive. The instructions are clear, simple and written in plain English and so straight forward you want to go and try them immediately. Great cookbook
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Wow I love this book. Like loads of us I love a take away and wish I could recreate these meals at home in a healthier and cheaper way. This book is full of exciting recipe ideas mixed in with some beautiful photos of the meals that are making my mouth water. Unlike most cookbooks where I find one or two ideas to try out this book has loads and I’m already planning my shopping list. I really liked the last few pages of the book as well where there were feast plans set up using the recipes perfect for entertaining. I have not heard of this chef before but will be keeping my eyes out for more from him.
So I have to say, I have never heard of this guy or watched a TV show he’s been in. But this book was WOW! I thought it was brilliant, I don’t really eat takeaways for the fact they are hugely calorific, plus I like to know what’s in my food. So this book ticks all the boxes for me, they look like really easy recipes and instructions. Lots of variety and ingredients which are readily available from the supermarkets. I love the photos of the recipes, lively in colour and look so tasty. I also like the nutritional nugget information on the pages, to help educate people about healthy eating. Brilliant book and seems like something different to all the other fakeaway type recipe books.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
