Little People Big Dreams is a series of nonfiction books written to inspire children to be what who they want to be. This one focuses on Fashion Designer, Vivienne Westwood, who expressed her views through her unique clothes. She used fashion to voice her protests, to be anti-fashionable, and to change the world.
The illustrations in this book are great - really detailed and add a lot to the short sentences on each page. The illustrations are probably my favourite part. I would have liked a little more information about the how's and why's (for example, why did she encourage people to buy fewer clothes, how did she show us to speak up and change the world, what was she protesting against)? I think it may be aimed at younger children and that is why the writing is so basic. Would love a Vivienne Westwood story aimed at older children covering the detail!
Even though this book is targeted at kids I feel like it's a perfect way to learn about this amazing woman. Also, people from all ages could appreciate it because it introduces us to Vivienne Westwood and her designs in a very visual and entertaining way.
This is another great book to add to the Little People, Big Dreams collection!
I love this series as they are perfect introductions to young people about some of the most famous and influential people from our past, and present in the case of this book.
4 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and can't wait for my daughter to get involved in the series
There are many ways to speak up and fight injustice in the world. The conditioning that we receive as children does not have to define us. The book about Vivienne Westwood's life story teaches little children about that. It teaches them about having the courage to do things differently if they so feel. Being unique is a gift we each receive!
Thank you to Net Galley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing me with an e-book copy in exchange for my honest review!
I received an arc from NetGalley for an honest review. I love these small and short biographies for kids about famous people in history. This one is about Vivienne Westwood and artist who is eventually discovered and her art can be found all around.
I've enjoyed very many of these young children's biographies about a host of different people, all written by the same author but often with a different artist. In this case it was Callaghan who contributed some beautiful and bright illustrations, in keeping with the subject matter since Westwood is a British fashion designer, who all but single-handedly brought punk and new wave fashions (so-called!) into the mainstream.
I should say right here that I have less than zero respect for the modeling-fashion industrial complex, which is why I like this book. Westwood was very much a rebel and her spirited approach, even though in many ways buying into the shallow and pretentious world of fashion, was to turn things on their head. She also preferred books to fashion magazines, and encouraged a recycling sort of an attitude by suggesting people buy fewer clothes and wear therm more often.
This book tells an interesting and colorful story and I commend it as a worthy read.
Lovely illustrated telling of Vivienne Westwood's story. I am excited to see the next book to come to this collection. This is perfect for young children to inspire them that they can be anything they want to be.
An excellent introduction to the life of one of the late 20th century's great fashion designers. This looks at Westwood's impact on fashion and culture in the 1980s and tells the reader how this iconic figure developed her views. It is part of a great series for young readers that introduces them to major influences in our society.
Vivienne Westwood a fashion icon and a role model to young women! I really like the book and the cute illustrations!
I would like to thank the publisher for giving me a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Another great life summed up in a few pages to prompt further interest and question why certain people leave a more indelible impression on all our lives. Little People, Big Dreams is a great concept for a book series and has undertaken biographies from figures in all walks of life.
Vivienne Westwood is a fashion designer but came from working class beginnings in England. A struggle at school, standing up to bullies and proud to be different and stand out. She never lost sight of her ambition, to study design and through clothes make our world a better place.
Heavily influenced by Punk she has always seemed to me out of time, ahead of her time in fact - and that has been captured in this book.
This is why I like them so much and believe they enable young minds to read and learn without making judgements. The words used are well chosen and crafted to sum up where others would fill pages:
“Clothes became her way to protest about the things she didn’t like”.
And as a nod to all the current awareness about climate change; before her time of Vivienne we read:
“She encourages people to buy fewer clothes and wear them more often”.
The other great bonus of this short book are the illustrations and colour palette which capture the essence of these unique character.
I love the picture books that Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara does. They are perfect for little children.
This one is a board book that introduces the little readers to the incredible life of the fashion designer and impresario, Vivienne Westwood.
It is written in simple sentences, which are perfect for the little ones and it offers them inspiring messages.
I love how quirky the illustrations are.
This book is part of the My First series of Little People, Big Dreams books. These are board book editions that should be sturdy enough to stand up to little hands. As always, the illustrations are bright and engaging with special attention paid to Vivienne's vibrant hair.
Vivienne tells the story of Vivienne Westwood, a little girl who stood up to others and grew up to use fashion as a means of expression. The author observes that today, Vivienne, continues to show us "how to speak up and change the world."
Let your child know that they can who whomever they want. Read them lots of these books to show them that the world is full of choices.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.
I love the "Little People, BIG DREAMS" series very much. The books are inspiring and document the lives of people who have achieved incredible status in our world. They all started out as a child with a dream.
The latest book in the series highlights the life of Vivienne Westwood. She was born in Glossop, Derbyshire, England, on April 8, 1941 and is considered one of the most unconventional and outspoken fashion designers in the world. Westwood rose to fame in the late 1970s when her early designs helped shape the look of the punk rock movement.
She came from humble beginnings and as a young woman wasn't sure how a working class girl from England could make a living in the art world. She adored fashion and jewelry and took her passion and skills into the market place and rocked that world. Her biggest claim to fame was endorsing the fact that people should let their clothes and style speak for themselves.
The book includes a look into a fashion designer's life with all the style ( and uniqueness ) that only Vivienne Woodword could bring to the fashion world. Included at the back of the book are facts and a biological timeline for those who want to dig deeper into this fascinating woman's highly success life. Also included are historical photos to enjoy. Highly recommended by Storywraps as is the entire series.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is another great installment to the Little People, Big Dreams series, this time about Vivienne Westwood.
The author is fantastic with these short but interesting and factual but fun biographies for young children and this one was also brightly coloured within the illustrations, which is also in the style of Vivienne Westwood - bright and vibrant.
This book teaches children that being different can be a good thing and to stand up for what you believe in or think is right.
Thank you for yet another fantastic book!
A very basic biography of Vivienne Westwood with bright and colourful illustrations, and easy for children to follow. It reveals what a very distinctive individual she is and the creativity she has brought to fashion. Thank you to Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Net Galley, and the publisher, Frances Lincoln Children's Books for an ARC.
A fabulous way to introduce the children to the marvel that was Vivienne Westwood. Westwood is a British fashion designer who is considered largely responsible for bringing modern punk and new wave fashion mainstream. The book brings to light the struggle that the rebellious avant garde designer went through to create her own niche space.
The text isn't overwhelming though the character on which the book is based on is. I wouldn't be surprised if you would yourself want to find out more about Westwood after reading this to your tots.
Adorable read and great story to share with little ones. Loved the illustrations and the simple writing. This is my first read from this series, and I'm now a fan! Will be sure to get more of these for my little girl to read.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC for an honest review.
Dame Vivienne Westwood is fashion royalty. For those who know next to nothing about fashion designers, how about jogging your memory cells to the Sex And The City Movie, where Carrie models a wedding gown which is later sent home to her by the designer for use at her wedding.. That gown - That designer! Still at loss, then you are in real need of this book cause how else will you know about this fierce, fearless, risk taker who brought about punk into fashion.
The newest offering in the Little People Big Dreams series charts Vivienne's path to success as she grows from a creative kid to a fabulous designer, making fashion accessible and relevant. It goes to show how she made bold fashion statements while others were just playing safe. Glad to be able to introduce her to my kid in such an eye pleasing format.
Perfect for fashion enthusiast mothers and biography geeks!

“Little Vivienne dreamed of mending the world to make it a better place.”
Vivienne Westwood has had a colourful life in all senses of the word. Her fashion designs are bright, bold, loud, strange, and iconoclastic. Her personality seems to be the same. Don’t try to tell her not to mix stripes and dots or tartans!
She was always outspoken - don’t pick on other people!

This is a great little introduction for kids to meet someone who not only marches to her own drum but gets others to join her parade. Who else can you think of who designs clothing and then tells you not to buy more?
Lovely book and another good addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS library from Quarto Publishing and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books. Thanks to NetGalley for the preview copy.
p.s. I'm delighted to see my library has a copy, and I hope yours does, too. Kids need to know how many ways they can choose to live their lives and make a difference.
I just reviewed Vivienne Westwood by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. #VivienneWestwood #NetGalley
If you asked me who Vivienne Westwood is, my answer would be "some kind of designer". What she did and who she is, I read that in this book. A small yet full of messages. As you can see in my reading list, I rarely read biography books. But in this format, I love them all.
