The All True Adventures (and Rare education ) of the Daredevil Daniel Bones was disheartening. I could not continue reading this book, did not enjoy it at all.
This was a book that was very easy to read, fun at times, but unfortunately, the story doesn't just grip you and make you read the book turning the pages eagerly. It's a bit stagnant. So, it was OK, promising at times, but it didn't work fully.
Thanks a lot to NG and the publisher for this copy.
It took me a while to read this, I couldn’t get in the mood of the book. As I read on I started to see similarities in the main characters to Hick and Jim, It follow a young boy and his adventures by the water. Of course he had an older companion to keep him company during the trials and encounters he has. I felt like I’d read this story before. Initially it started well, but as I got further into the book I got confused and bored and it became a struggle to finish it.
The All True Adventures (and Rare Education) of the Daredevil Owen Booth is an action packed coming of age story that takes the reader on a fast paced journey all through late 19th century Europe.
Daniel Owens escapes a life of poverty and abuse when the charismatic “frogman” Captain Clarke B accidentally ends up in his village and decides to take an assistant. They journey all over Europe with their frog suit spreading the good word from the mountains of Germany to the sewers of Paris and as they do so Daniel learns about the big bad world.
Daniel is an entertaining narrator he goes in to everything with a sense of optimism even when the people around him are disposable most of the time and the Cap turns out to be a wrong ‘un which was bound to happen. The book is full of great characters but we rarely get to spend much time with them due the episodic nature of the book. Even Andrea who has a major part to play is not given much space. There is a lack of dialogue on the whole that makes it difficult to get any insight in to any of the characters motivations for their actions.
However this isn’t a navel gazing type of novel it’s about adventure! Dammit! And money! How to get to get it, how to lose it and how to get it back again.
Overall this is a fun read for the vicars daughter Susan and her complex love life alone.
This reminded me a lot of The 100 Year Old Man.... It is a slow paced adventure mixed with a coming of age drama. There are some great characters, and the ever changing location is a wonderful insight into the late 1800s. There's a certain charm to the whole thing that made it a pleasure to read.
I found this book hard going. It was not the usual page turner that I really like reading.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
I found this to be a fun read, it’s nothing heavy at all, easy reading, and an overall good adventure story.
Daniel Bones finds himself conscripted by the Captain as his daredevil apprentice and the two of them travel the world amazing the public, and having a jolly good time of it, along with a few scrapes.
If we are ever allowed on holiday again, I’d recommend this as a great beach holiday book!
My thanks to Netgalley and the 4th Estate and William Collins for the advance copy.
I cannot currently find a listing for this book on goodreads, but will post the review below closer to publication date.
I can't say I hugely enjoyed this book. It lacked a little something for me.
Despite there being nonsense, and stunts and danger,I'm afraid I found it all a bit dull .
Some super characters, the Captain especially I thought.
