The Closer You Get by Mary Torjussen is a gripping psychological thriller that explores the dark side of obsession and betrayal.
The book follows Ruby, who suspects her husband Tom is having an affair with his co-worker, and becomes obsessed with finding out the truth.
The plot twists and turns as secrets are revealed and lies are exposed, leading to a shocking finale that will leave you breathless.
The Closer You Get is a must-read for fans of domestic thrillers and psychological suspense.
I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
As a psychological thriller, I enjoyed the premise behind this one. Ruby and Harry are both married to other people, and embark on an affair. They decide to leave their respective partners, but unfortunately someone has found out and blackmail and revenge ensues. I felt this was really well written, holding my attention right to the end, with just enough twists and turns that weren't too predictable. Unfortunately thought it was just lacking something for me, and I can't quite put my finger on what it is. The characters were quite unlikeable, but that's to expect with two people hell-bent on achieving their own happiness at the expense of their own families and partners. That being said, this was an enjoyable read and I'll definitely look out for more from Mary Torjussen.
A great, thrilling read, which will keep you entertained throughout. A good one sitting read, get the nibbles ready, close the door, and read!
Loved the premise and there were some great twists and turns along the way. It moved along at a good pace and kept me hooked. Looking forward to reading more from the author.
When you fall in love with someone who isn't your husband and the pair of you plan to leave your respective spouses, you expect your lover to follow through.
When that doesn't happen, it devastates lives - even more so when someone knows exactly what you've been up to and wants to make you pay for your mistakes.
This psychological thriller is a real page turner with some great twists. It's an easy read and will appeal to anyone who loves the genre.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC without obligation.

.My favourite book is a good psychological thriller and this really was one.
I was hooked from the start and found this difficult to put down. Well paced twists and turns, well written characters and a book full of infidelity, secrets, lies, jealousy and betrayal (I know someone else said the same!)
Definitely recommend and can I have the next one please.
Such a compelling and twisty thriller! I loved the premise and couldn’t put it down. I’d definitely check out more from the author.
I love a good psychological thriller and really enjoyed this fantastic book. I was drawn in from the start and found this difficult to put down. The twists and turns were well paced and compelled me to read 'just for a bit longer' to see what was going to happen. Well written characters - I could empathise with both Ruby and Emma. This is a book of infidelity, secrets, lies, jealousy and betrayal.
Highly recommended. I can't wait to read more from Mary Torjussen.

What do you do if you leave your husband for your lover but he doesn't leave his wife?
That's what happens here and the aftermath is a sight to see. The characters were well written and I really enjoyed it. Thrilling.
This book was everything i hoped it would be.
The storyline is original enough and really keeps you o the edge of your seat. It reads easy and is really fast paced. You can easily finish this in one sitting.
It kept me guessing the entire time and I was really happy with the ending.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The Closer You Get by Mary Torjussen.
At the time of reading, I was pretty into this book, but now thinking about the premise of it, I just get so sad. Everyone in the book is kind of terrible in their own way. There is a lot of infidelity, gaslighting, neglect, and cold dismissal. Personally, these are difficult topics to read about, and I don't usually seek them out.
But, in fairness, that doesn't mean that this wasn't a totally layered and compulsively readable drama. It didn't completely surprise me, but it also didn't strike me as formulaic, so it definitely had me on the edge of my seat.
So, the story begins with Ruby having an affair with Harry her boss. When he does not show up at the hotel for the weekend, she is nervous because they were planning on leaving each of their spouses. She had already had done so; you find out he is with his spouse on a weekend getaway. Ruby’s whole world changes from Friday, going to work the following week she is let go and people know what she and her boss were doing, but once again it is the woman’s fault and not the man’s. once she slowly begins to put her life back in order, she is still feeling the effects, with someone posting an add with her phone number and her receiving calls for sex. She felt someone in her apartment and things being moved.
Then you met Harry’s wife Emma and you get her point and you see things from her side and then the story begins to take a whole different take when Ruby’s husband begins to try to torment her. All the while you think Harry is just free and clear well, he will get his.
What really got me was as I was getting to the end and Tom and Ruby were having it out, I realized at that moment it reminded me of the old movie “Gaslight” just a newer take on the physiological games Tom was playing, using on Ruby throughout their marriage. You get the feeling though at the end that it might not stop. For me, this is an excellent book but one that really did not get me moving along until Emma’s character came into the story than the entire book just seemed to take off, from there it was nonstop. A very good book.
A page turner that’s hard to put down. This book was written as though a movie is playing in your head and you aren’t sure who to root for. A book made to be read by everyone, it will leave you satisfied in some sense.
What an interesting thriller. A quick read that kept me on the toes until the end! Worth checking out while inbetween books!
