Thank you Net Galley and Canelo for an early release of this fantastic book, WHOA what characters!! I never wanted this book to end, it was Fantastic! What an interesting plot, I Loved it!! By far one of the best books I’ve read!
Oh this was just brilliant! Plenty of flawed characters all looking out just for themselves. Narcissism and selfishness abounds in this book with plenty of secrets and lies. Some of the characters can't believe life is not going the way it was planned and it isn't clear who is pulling the strings and why.
So many twists and turns and some rather implausible coincidences, but I would urge you not to examine them too much, just go with the flow and enjoy the ride. My type of book, I loved this one.
Harry and Ruby are in love. The only problem, they are married to other people! They decide to leave their spouses on Friday night and meet at a hotel. Ruby shows up at the hotel but Harry never does. What happened to Harry? Why did he change his mind? There is so many awesome twists and turns in this book and just when you think nothing else can go wrong, whammo another twist! I read this book very quickly as I needed to know what was going on! This book has everything a great thriller needs, love, jealousy, and revenge! I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
Finished reading 'The Closer You Get' by Mary Torjussen. In this domestic drama meets psychological thriller co-workers Ruby and Harry decide to leave their spouses to start a new life together. However, when Harry doesn't turn up on the decided place and time, Ruby's life is shattered. Someone knows about her affair and are determined to punish her. From losing her job to being stalked, Ruby has to face it all.
The prologue is what grabs the attention of the reader as we are informed of a possible murder being committed and witnessed. What follows next is a crazy ride full of twists involving affairs, lies, revenge and secrets being exposed. Almost all the characters of this book were highly unlikable and though some of the twists were predictable, nonetheless, this was an easy to read book with an entertaining storyline.
Overall 3.5 stars for this enjoyable domestic suspense.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyable read. The characters are well developed and the story unfolds at a nice pace. A few twists but nothing really jaw dropping. That said, I couldn't call the ending.
Thanks to Netgalley and Canelo for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ruby is in an unhappy marriage with Tom. She starts a new job and almost immediately starts an affair with her boss, Harry. They make a plan to leave their spouses and meet up a hotel. Ruby follows the plan but Harry doesn't show up and she finds herself fired while Harry is off on holiday with his pregnant wife.
This was an easy quick read that kept me engaged. It was a little predictable in places but overall a good read. I would read more from this author.

Mary Torjussen May not be as well known as some other authors of Psychological Suspense -YET....
BUT, she should be!!
I REALLY enjoyed this tale of adultery and deceit!
Nothing is as it seems in this twisty novel!
Here is all you need to know:
The players :
Ruby is married to Tom, but in love with her boss, Harry, who is married to Emma.
The plot:
Harry and Ruby have selected a day to tell their spouses that they are leaving, and he has booked a hotel room for them to meet in, after their spouses have been told.
Ruby follows through on their plan, but Harry never shows up and now he is ghosting her.
And, if that isn’t bad enough, she gets FIRED from her job, too!
WHO or WHAT caused the plan to change?
I’m not telling.
But, I will say...I had fun finding out!
Mary Torjussen is three for three for me, with this being my favorite so far!

For quite a few years Ruby has been miserable in her marriage with Tom. So when she meets Harry, kind and sweet, she can't help but fall for him. This feeling is mutual but there is a problem:Harry is her boss and he is also married. After 18 months of seeing each other in secret they finally decide to be together. The plan is simple:on the same evening Ruby will leave her husband and Hary will leave his wife,Emma. After that they will meet in a hotel, spend a few days there and then figure things out from there. Ruby follows the plan, but Harry never shows up. Moreover, she is fired from her job. So she has to start over her life. But there are sinister things happening.
There were very little thriller elements in this book. They don't even start until the half point. The book is told from the perspectives of both Ruby and Emma, switching every few chapters. The majority of the book is a character study. You get to know these two women and all their problems. I think if it was in a literary fiction genre it would have worked better, but it was supposed to be a thriller. Thing is, I figured out what was happening and who was behind it the second it happened for the first time. And then I couldn't understand how Ruby could be so stupid and not realize what was happening. Does she know so many people who like to play cruel mind games?
As a thriller it was a let down, unfortunately. But it was well written and fast paced, I read it in two sittings. 2.5 stars.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.. This is the first time I have read a book by this author and believe me it won’t be my last. This book definitely draws you in and keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. I mean what could go wrong with a woman scorned and an affair? Had lots of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very last page. So much fun to read. I highly recommend that you read this!
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Canelo for the ARC.
I enjoyed this book on the whole, it has a complex plot, some red-herrings and twists which really came out of 'left-field', although overall I think it was a little drawn-out in places. Nevertheless, the story keeps the reader guessing and I liked the writing style.
Told initially from Ruby's point of view: she lives with husband Tom - who has a well-paid job in Sales - and frequently has Tom's teenaged son Josh to stay, with whom she has developed a bond as good as having her own child. She and Tom have been together for 12 years but her marriage has deteriorated. She has slowly and insidiously been stripped of herself; subordinating herself to Tom's will in all things - what they eat, and how the house is furnished - her own books and keepsakes relegated to the spare room. Constantly told that she has no taste or style, that she has no good judgment, nor appropriate intellect, Ruby has been subjected to Tom's controlling and possessive behaviour for too long. She needs to leave.
She wasn't looking for an affair when she took a job via a temping agency at Harry Sheridan's firm, but over 18 months their relationship developed to the point of agreeing to tell their respective spouses (Emma in the case of Harry) that they were leaving home on Friday 21 June.
Ruby waits in agony at the hotel as each day passes over the weekend and Harry doesn't appear. He's not answering her calls. However, Tom keeps sending her endearing and caring texts as to her wellbeing.
When Ruby goes into work on the Monday she discovers she's been fired.
She has no money, now no home, and no job, and completely at a loss as to where Harry is.
As Ruby tries to rectify these situations and rebuild a life she faces obstacles all along the way. Strange things start to occur. How could anyone know about their affair? they had both been so careful with their communications and meetings, their lies to their partners. But someone knows and seems to be intent on destroying Ruby's life.
Now, Emma, enters the narrative with her point of view and that's where this review has to stop. Suffice it to say that there are twists and turns, revelations and surprises as the truth gradually reveals itself, with a catastrophic consequence.
Well worth reading.
A very good thriller from Mary Torjussen told from the view of Ruby and Emma,Ruby is married to Tom who is a control freak so when she meets Harry at work they embark on an affair which unbeknown to Ruby will have far reaching consequences.A well written thriller which keeps you turning the pages,it is the first book I''ve read from this author and it won't be my last,a cracking 4 star read.
The Closer You Get the faster you should run !
What could wrong, an affair with your boss, a jealous controlling husband, lies and deceit around every corner.
Loved it !! The pages fly by. Some characters you give advice to , yell at and others well, they are just nasty people.
Twists and turns will keep your attention to the last page.
Thanks to Net Galley and Canelo Mystery and Thrillers for a fun read !
This was an incredible thriller that I had a great time reading. Exquisite character development and fast flowing story make this book a success
This was my first book by Mary Torjussen. Thank you Mary Torjussen and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. The premise seems a simple one a married woman having an affair with a married man. They decide to leave their spouses to be with each other. From here the story starts to twist in a way that’s unexpected.. I will be reading this author again.
Fun domestic suspense involving affairs, secrets, and lies. Nothing earth-shattering, but fans of the genre will not be disappointed!
Thanks Netgalley for my ARC copy of this. It was my second book by this author and I enjoyed the first enough to be happy to be approved for this one. The writing was great and the suspense held up throughout the book. If you are a fan of domestic suspense this will be right up your alley. You really feel as if you are spying on the characters are you scream "No! I don't think that is a good idea!"
Ruby is finally leaving her loveless marriage and her controlling husband, Tom. She's met another man at work and he is leaving his marriage too. Harry and her have a plan to leave them both the same day and to meet up. Yet Harry never shows. He isn't answering her. She's fired of course from her job and she can't go home. As she struggles to pick up the pieces of her life...things get scary. But why? Is it Tom? Is this related to Harry? Will she figure it out and what will she have to do to keep her life?
They say there’s nothing worse than a woman scorned... what about a man scorned??
Ruby dean lives with her husband Tom in a lovely neighbourhood, has a beautiful home and her husband Tom has plenty of money, however their marriage is an unhappy one on Ruby’s part she feels unloved and unappreciated - Tom emotionally abuses her and this drives her into the arms of her boss Harry whom ruby falls head over heels in love with and they embark on a passionate affair.
Harry is the opposite of Tom - kind caring and compassionate they both decide to move in together and plan to tell their partners one Friday evening, however Harry never shows up to their planned meeting place and ruby is distraught what could have possibly changed his mind?...
Things take a sinister turn for ruby when her life goes on a downward spiral and she starts being stalked by someone who is not happy with her and is determined to make her suffer, but what possibly for? As far as ruby is aware her husband Tom didn’t know about her affair with Harry and neither did harrys wife Emma, or did they??
This was an addictive fast paced and juicy thriller that kept me engaged and hooked until the very last page! I do love a good domestic thriller and this didn’t disappoint me. I’d definitely say this is one of my top reads of 2020! Thank you to netgalley for my copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
What a great book. Would definitely recommend to it others I no. Great work will look out for this author again
Thank you Mary Torjussen and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The idea of this thriller drew me in. Two married people who are unhappy in their marriage and decide to leave their spouses, but one never turns up. What could have gone wrong?!
Ruby is an unhappy woman married to Tom, but in love with Harry.
Harry is married to Emma but in love with Ruby.
While the beginning chapters started out strong, the plot dragged and the constant change of pov's each chapter seemed to make the book even slower to me instead of bringing more depth.
So much cheating and lying with such a disappointing ending to this book..
Would I recommend it? Probably not.
Mary Torjussen’s The Closer You Get is a edge-of-your-seat thriller that takes coincidences to a whole new level. Ruby is very unhappy in her marriage to Tom. She meets Harry when she takes a temp position in his company and they have an instant attraction. They end up having an affair and decide to leave their spouses for each other and move in together and live happily ever after.
Ruby doesn’t get her happily ever after. Harry won’t leave his wife, Emma. Ruby is inundated with guilt, sadness and fear. She has lost her job, lives in a ratty flat and has left her husband and her lover.
Emma knows about Harry’s crush on Ruby and is devastated when she figures out how far it has gone. She wants revenge. But at what price?
The dual POV from both Ruby and Emma is fantastic. Ruby was a very sympathetic character – sad, lonely, downtrodden by her terrible husband who just wanted to be loved by Harry. She believed she found her prince, but Harry is a toad. Emma seems to be a strong, capable, career woman who could live her life just fine without Harry, but she loves him, even when she knows there is another woman in the picture.
As a reader, if you dislike coincidences you will have to check that notion at Chapter One. Coincidences abound in this book, but life is a series of small decisions that lead up to the big ones that might blow up in your face. Very good thriller, tight writing, realistic characters and twists and turns galore. Loved it!
