I hate to give out too much info on this book - there are so many twists that you just don't see coming...

Applause for Mary Torjussen! A supreme read!

Starts out with Ruby having an affair with her boss (Harry) and then Ruby leaves her husband to be with Harry...

The suspense just keeps on building. Superb writing style and character depiction.

Ruby leaves her controlling husband Tom to start a new life with Harry who is also her boss. They arranged a time to tell their respective spouses and will then meet in a hotel to start their new life together. Ruby duly tells Tom, leaves but Harry doesn’t turn up. What’s going on? She spends a restless weekend and tries desperately to contact Harry but no joy. She turns up to work on the Monday morning to discover she’s been fired and that Harry is on holiday with his wife Emma to celebrate her pregnancy. What??? What has Harry been up to? Why does he do this to Ruby and ruin her life? Well, this shock is just the start of a sequence of events that overturns lives, who can she to trust, and who is targeting Ruby in a variety of nasty ways. This story is told by Ruby and Emma and this works very effectively.

This is an easy to read, well written book and although the plot is fairly predictable it is nevertheless enjoyable. None of the characters are particularly likeable especially the men although all of the protagonists act in thoughtless ways. I have a grudging admiration for Ruby for sticking with Tom for so long and also for Emma who surprisingly comes through for Ruby when she most needs help.

Overall, a fun read that has twists, a touch of menace and should satisfy fans of the domestic suspense genre.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for the ARC.

If you love domestic thrillers this is the book for you! The characters are drawn in such a way as to create a real connection with the reader. The unreliability of the narrator creates an underlying dread that stays with you till the end. It made it hard to know exactly who the good/bad guys are, minus one obvious bad guy. I read this at every opportunity and would recommend it to others.

This is the first book by this author and won’t be my last.
The premise seems a simple one a married woman having an affair with a married man. They decide to leave their spouses to be with each other. From here the story starts to twist in a way that’s unexpected. I liked the main female characters as none of them were the victim. I will be reading this author again.

What can I say?

This novel wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I don't really know what I was expecting. It was a good, somewhat fluffy read. I was a bit confused at certain points, and maybe it was just me, but there were times where I felt like I'd missed something and the author seemed to be just tying or suggestively writing that some suspicions of the main character were causative links between two ideas or scenarios. Like something that had happened was automatically because of something else, whether it made sense or not.. whether we had seen this scenario happening or not.

There was a lot of drama, there was a lot of seeing the main character become paranoid, but I felt I wasn't sure whether the character was becoming crazy/delusional/paranoid...or whether these weird things were actually happening to her.

All in all, I did enjoy this novel....although it was not exactly my favourite book I've ever read.

A brilliant story of a love affair gone wrong. Ruby Dean starts a new job and falls in love with her married boss Harry. Eventually after a Paris sojourn, the married lovers agreed leave their partners at the same time.
Ruby leaves her controlling husband, Tom who she no longer loves with no trouble and waits and waits in a hotel room for her married lover to come once he leaves his wife. Does he come??? Does he heck!
I loved this story which is told from 2 points of view, Ruby's and Harry's wife Emma. The suspense is great and I could not put it down as I wanted to know what happens. A must read.
Many thanks to Canelo & Netgalley for this ARC.

Stuck in a loveless marriage to her husband Tom, Ruby takes on a new job and embarks on an affair with her new boss. This was a really fun thriller all about an affair gone wrong. I breezed my way through it, thought the pacing was great, the main character terrible but overall a great read.

The twisted tale of two women, Ruby and Emma, and their husbands Tom and Harry (Dick is missing but they both act like one) and the lies, deceit and death that comes from irresponsible and reckless behavior. Alternatively told by the two women, I much preferred the narration by Emma but Ruby finally sees the truth (the lies, that is) and the story wraps up sadly but necessarily, under the circumstances. While the plot is devious, so is everyone in this book. The novel kept my attention solidly about a third of the way in and when I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it and wondering how it would resolve itself. Quite well actually. Recommended for all domestic noir readers - you won’t be disappointed.

If there is anyone considering an affair - read this book. Jeepers you won’t be doing anything you might have thought of - and hope the person you though of having the affair with won’t either. Certainly don’t have an affair with your married boss. And male bosses - don’t think the grass in the office is any greener than at home. It only takes one trip to Paris to decide to destroy four lives and those of your children apparently. Ruby is not the brightest tool in the box. Harry even less so.

There’s that moment when they decide to leave their partners, she waits for him in a hotel and ….he never shows. She goes into work, is told she is sacked and that the boss is off on a holiday with his newly pregnant wife. No job, no husband and no lover. I can’t say I cared.

About Ruby that is. The novel is a cracking look at an affair gone very toxic indeed and was suspenseful and enjoyable.

Never, never, never have an affair with your boss – especially if he is married. Yes, he is handsome, yes he is charming, affluent, good fun and of course – he adores you. If ever these words were true they certainly were in this book.

Ruby is married to Tom and they live in a nice house and she once thought she was in love with him. 18 months ago she got a job as a PA to Harry and immediately love was in the air. So much so that when he declared he couldn’t live without her on a ‘business’ trip to Paris, they determined to jettison their partners and live together (obviously happy ever after).

So we first meet Ruby on a Friday as she is loading her car with the bare essentials to rendezvous with Harry at a hotel. First she has to leave Tom, which she does and drives off into the sunset. So she sits and waits at the hotel for Harry to arrive; and waits, and waits – all weekend. No answer to her calls to his mobile, no messages, nothing. She even drives past his house, no lights on, his car not on the drive.

When she goes to work on Monday she is met by HR who promptly tells her she is sacked. Her ‘friend’ Sarah speaks to her to say that Harry’s wife, Emma, is pregnant and they have gone off for a romantic week. So there she is, homeless and jobless and on her own.

The plot is laid out in chapters from Ruby and Emma’s points of view and is compelling reading. I could not consume it fast enough and heartily recommend it.

Two things though. Would you really ever be dumb enough to walk away from your home without some sort of proper plan set-up? Would the vague assertions that ‘we can find a place to rent together’ – would that not come first? Would you not have a plan as to how things would work out at work? Let’s remember Ruby is not 16.

The second thing – what would your reaction be if you knew that your husband that you still love and still have sex with – went off to Paris with the woman you knew he was having an affair with – I bet it is not what Emma did. (Lots to say about this but do not want to spoil the book).

That said – read it. You will not believe it, it is just SO GOOD.

Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.

Ruby is married to Tom in what could only be described as a loveless marriage. While he's not a violent man he has a razor sharp tongue that can slice right through her very heart and soul. She is made to feel worthless on the best days.

When a new job opportunity arrives Ruby is thrilled to accept the offer and to be out from under her husbands thumb. Ruby is even more thrilled when she meets her new very handsome and very married boss, Harry. He is everything she could ever want in a man and it appears he feels the same about her. Over the course of 18 months the relationship blossoms and grows. On a work trip to Paris he finally takes the plunge and asks Ruby to live with him. Here they set into motion how and when they will go about leaving their spouses.

When the day arrives Ruby can hardly contain herself. When Tom takes the news of her leaving better than expected she feels as if her life is finally about to become her own with the man she believes is her soul mate. Ruby rushes to the hotel to wait for Harry but Harry never arrives and Ruby's life will never be the same again.

This was a fun, popcorn popping, fly on the wall kind of read that I always find delightful. Fans of domestic suspense will be sure to devour this come pub date! 4 *be careful what you wish for* stars!

The Closer You Get was okay but I was expecting a little more drama.
All the ingredients for a thriller are there but the recipe came out wrong. Bad relationships, bad friends, bad job, bad housing, bad families I just wish Mary had picked one or two themes for this. I found it a disaster.

Overall this was a well developed story, well written with good characters but unfortunately, for me personally, it wasn't an edge of seat thriller.

Thank you to Netgalley and Canelo Publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book.

A good read for thriller lovers.
Ruby and Harry are in love. Intresting thing is that they both are married. Although they're unhappy with their spouses.
Ruby's husband is controlling and never let her do what she wants to do. She wants to get rid off him.
Emma, Harry's wife knives about them but it seems she doesn't let this matter go easily.
After sometime Ruby stops from hearing Harry and wondered whether he's ok or not.
This was a good thriller. It made me jump from my seat whenever a suspense is revealed.
Thanks to NetGalley and Penguin for an advance copy.
