I picked up this book because the summary sounded interesting, the cover looked enticing, and when I say it had zero reviews on goodreads I thought I would give it a shot.
The story is about a man named Troilus, or Troi, who comes back one day to find his town destroyed and everyone he loves slaughtered. He is then faced with a choice, will he take revenge on them? Will he be able to hold on to his true self before this rebellion ends?
Starting on page one, I found the language to be choppy and hard to read. I couldn't follow who was talking, what they were talking about, or who they were talking to. Conversations seems to jump around and the dialogue was hard to follow. I decided to push through as I saw the book had one of my favorite things: short chapters.
I am a sucker for a book with short chapters. I love how they flow and allow you to feel like you've accomplished a lot. This books chapters were about 2-5 pages long on average.
Chapter two, which starts on page three, brings in a huge part of the plot. This was a mistake. There was no time to build up to us understanding this world or its characters for us to feel anything for their destruction. Usually I am begging a book to get to the "good' part where the action sets off the rest of the plot, but in this book I felt like I had been smacked in the face with the catalyst of events.
After getting to chapter five though, I knew this was not the book for me. I almost hate rating it this early in the story, but I was having such a hard time reading it as the writing was lacking any and all flow. Here is some of the examples of difficult lines I found:
"Only revenge drives him, as he finds himself caught up in the bloody turmoil of rebellion.
It is a long way back. "
"She was a pretty little thing, and Troilus raised a nonchalant hand in response but added his best winning smile."
"We know where they’re lying up, Revered One, so it will be there. Don’t worry"
And my favorite - "He did not throw compliments round like nuts and fruit at a wedding." (Okay this one is less awkward I shared because I found it funny.
I learned why some books have zero reviews online...
Please, if you read the summary and think you might like the book, give it a shot. I would hate for my review on the story to keep someone from a story that might love, just because I did not like it. Sometimes books don't match people, and clearly this one was not for me.
