House of Earth and Blood is a bit of a departure for Sarah J. Maas in that it immediately feels a lot more urban fantasy than high fantasy, even though the familiar fae vs human tensions are still there. Crescent City is a dazzling and complex setting that seems to be inspired by Norse mythology and contains a bewildering array of new species, each belonging to a particular 'house', We are introduced to Bryce Quinlan who is half-human, half-fae, and her werewolf best friend, Danica. A dangerous terrorist has just been released from prison but Bryce doesn't have time to worry about that in between dumping her boyfriend, foolishly fantasising about dating a werewolf, and dancing the night away with her friends - until something happens that will change Bryce forever. The extract ends on devastating nuclear bomb of a cliffhanger - I can't believe I'll have to wait another month to read the rest. An incredibly compelling opening.

I was so excited when I saw the first five chapters available.
At first, I debated whether I could wait a few more weeks until the book’s release in March, or if I could handle reading only five chapters and having to wait for the rest of the book. My curiosity got the better of me.
Let me start by saying that although this book has the same writing style from SJM – the story itself is nothing like I imagined. The verdict is out on whether this is a good thing.
The mix of technology and fantasy had me intrigued from the beginning. However, there was a lot to take in for the first few pages (quite possible down to my own excitement for reading new SJM material). But - It didn’t take too long to settle into the flow of the story.
Bryce ‘B’ was hard to connect with for a while – this was down to so many characters being introduced at once. I started to warm to her towards the end of these chapters – right when the pace was starting to pick up.
After finishing chapter five, it has left me both hopeful and a little excited to read the full story in March.

Thank you so much Netgalley and Bloomsbury for an extract of the first five chapters! I was already excited to read the book, but I am even more so now. It was nothing like I thought it would be, in a good way! I love the use of technology and fantasy together, set in a completely new world filled with every magical creature known! Bryce seems like an awesome dominate character that could hold her own against Aelin and Amren in a contest. Sarah J Maas proves again that she is such an amazing writer creating a completely different world and characters that you quickly grow to love. So sad that I couldn't binge this whole book in one sitting, but I am looking forward to the release next month!

Sarah J Maas has the ability to create worlds from nothing while weaving extraordinary characters & unforeseeable plot twists making them so real it’s as if you’re living in the story. If this taste showed even a glimmer of what House of Earth & Blood will have to offer we are all going to be in for one serious ride.

I was instantly connected to Bryce as the story quickly wove unconventional friendships amongst the houses of Migard. What should have been a fun night out after a bad date quickly turned into a dark gruesome fate. I found myself plummeting into an abyss of desperation for more of the story. I want to know—no I NEED to know what happens next.

I'm a huge Maas fan, I've loved Throne of Glass and ACOTAR so much but this doesn't compare. There is a case of really bad info-dumping with the world-building being shoved down our throats, not carefully built up like I expect from Sarah. There's also about 10 characters introduced in one go, none of which are fleshed out at all. The main character is very immature considering this is supposed to be adult, she seems obsessed with partying, taking drugs and sex as well as annoyingly enough calling every guy that shows any concern for her at all an alphahole. If this is Sarah's attempt at being PC by having a heroine that likes to screech at every male in the vicinity, I'm not impressed, she seems like a right brat. The urban fantasy vibe isn't working for me and I'm amazed to see people say this is the most mature and polished her writing has ever been. Erm, the writing in Sarah's other 2 series is beautifully detailed and in-depth, lush, sweeping and evocative, in comparison, the writing here is flat, lifeless and generic, it doesn't have any detail or feel like her style at all. If you ask me, her other books feel more mature. ACOTAR is more adult than this and way better written and the writing in the later Throne of Glass books is gorgeous. I'd say the first 4 chapters were full of filler and fluff; just endless information, way too much dialogue, too many characters and names to keep up with, no plot and weak writing and I never thought I'd say this, but for the first time ever I'm bored with an SJM book. Things start to pick up in chapter 5 when something happens to her best friend but honestly, I just couldn't care less. I feel like either someone else wrote this or she's trying so desperately to cater to people who hated her other series by changing the writing so much, it feels unrecognizable as her style. The main character is basically the same format as always: strong female character has something tragic happen to her and is desperate to get revenge, fae, demons, winged creatures; it's getting repetitive. Let's hope the rest of the book is better. I'd rather have the next ACOTAR book than this.

HOLY MOLY!
I didn't know anything about this book before picking up this sample and now i cannot wait for the book to come out.

I'm a huge fan of Sarah J. Maas' ACOTAR series and this gives me an almost nostalgic feeling of being back in one of Maas' universes. Can't wait!

This was an extract from the future book. Amazing cast of characters and non stop action. I was beginning to get me head around the story and becoming committed. Can't wait for the publication,, it set my imagination on fire.

I was very excited to see a sampler for House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas on NetGalley, and I requested it straight away. I have a kind of love/hate thing with Sarah J Maas's books even though the author is one of the loveliest I've met, and I enjoyed A Court of Thorns and Roses a lot when I binged it last year. Like, a lot. Even though it's not my thing and hella problematic. It's complicated.

Because of this, I am very excited to see what I think of the first Crescent City book, House of Earth and Blood.

"There was a wolf at the gallery door."

I liked the run down of the different houses at the start - not that I know truly what I meant when I read them. It did mean however that once the houses started being mentioned then I knew a bit about what was going on.

There is a map. Of course there's a map, it's fantasy. But it's a very pretty map, a round of applause for the cartographer!

As for the story, you are dumped right in. And I love it. I found myself quickly becoming submerged in the world, watching it come slowly to life in front of me. I loved the vibrancy, the colour and life in the characters.

I feel like Sarah J Mass's writing style has definitely evolved. It's much more mature and polished from what I remember of Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses. It's darker too, more gritty, yet with a wry humour. I'm impressed, I think.

This sampler is pretty sizable - five whole chapters that took me well over an hour to read through. It has made me very excited for House of Earth and Blood, because I need more! It's an excellent start.

Well this forward, it was very little for me, of course it stays in the most interesting part and that causes one to kill himself, at the beginning of reading made me remember Cassandra clare, with the urban city and the wolves, here the difference is that it has explicit language , drugs and mentions of sexual intercourse, is enlaving me and I hope the whole book fascinates me, this is just a taste of the new world that the author created, and there is definitely no longer Velaris nor terasen.

Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh.... seriously Maas has done it again! This preview sucked me in immediately, and I am anxiously awaiting this books release!

Let me say, I REALLY can't wait to get my hands on a copy of this!

I fell in love from merely a few pages! I loved the fantasy - almost mythological - aspect of this which is normalised by the way Maas has crafted the world. We have fae and half-faes talking about going to the gym. It felt real.

Furthermore, the concept of this WOW.

i have one thing left to say... TAKE MY MONEY!

An email pinged into my inbox this morning from Netgalley, a chance to read an exclusive extract of one of my most anticipated 2020 reads. I downloaded it immediately and have consumed in one sitting.

The extract comprises of the prologue and the first 5 chapters and my goodness am I excited to get my hands on the book come March.

I am so unbelievably excited about this book and the beginning doesn’t disappoint. I felt an instant connection with the main character Bryce and indeed the other characters we are introduced to. The world is large but introduced brilliantly, only 5 chapters in and I feel I have a handle on the way it works. I am sure this will turn out to be a five-star read for me.

As expected from Sarah J Maas this book sounds brilliant. It is gripping and engaging and has the combination of fantasy and romance. I look forward to learning more about Bryce.

Didn’t get to read this. The download never sent, no matter how many times I refreshed and made are I had all the things I needed in place which is a shame, I was dying to read this considering it was compared to Jessica Jones. I wouldn’t rate this if I didn’t need to, but for now I will say no stars until I can read fully!

I was an anxious to read this extract, thinking that Maas couldn’t possibly top her A Court of Thorns and Roses series but I shouldn’t have worried. The teaser has me desperate for more. It’s brimming with all the typical Maas angst, strong female characters and broody bad ass men. I honestly don’t know how I’m going to manage to wait until March for the full release!

I have been anticipating this book for so long, so when I saw that there was a sample, I jumped at the chance to read it. I absolutely adore Sarah J Maas writing, so this does not disappoint. This is more of an adult story if I remember correctly, but the writing style is similar to that of Throne of Glass.
