My Hero Academia, Vol. 1, a captivating manga by Kohei Horikoshi, introduces readers to a world where superpowers, known as "quirks," are commonplace. This Advanced Reader Copy, provided by NetGalley, follows the story of Izuku Midoriya, a young boy born without a quirk, as he dreams of becoming a superhero.
Horikoshi's artwork is dynamic and detailed, bringing the colorful world of My Hero Academia to life. The story is an inspiring and heartfelt exploration of perseverance, friendship, and what it means to be a hero. The characters are well-developed and diverse, each with their unique quirks and personalities.
While the premise may seem familiar, the execution is fresh and engaging, keeping readers invested in the journey of Midoriya and his fellow aspiring heroes. My Hero Academia, Vol. 1 successfully establishes a compelling universe with endless potential for growth and excitement.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing the ARC of this exceptional manga. I'd absolutely recommend this to shounen fans or fans of superheroes.
Score: 5/5
This manga title is perfect for middle schoolers, who can relate to the main character--and admire his determination. Add in positives messages, likable characters in general--with of course the antagonists--and it's a winning recipe. I definitely recommend this title.
I know a lot of people enjoy reading My Hero Academia. I was happy to see it was available on Netgalley. I'm glad I was able to read it.
A little difficult to read on a kindle but other than that, great! I'm a huge fan of the anime so getting to dive further into the universe was super fun, and a great palate cleanse as well!
My Hero Academia, Vol. 1 Izuku Midoriya: Origin by Kohei Horikoshi is the first volume in the manga series My Hero Academia which has also been made into an anime series, season 1 of which is on Netflix!
This is a black and white comic book, with a story that moves along at a good pace and the anime is very similar.
My Hero Academia Vol 1 Izuku Midoriya was published on 4th August 2015 and is available from Amazon , Waterstones and Bookshop.org .

I was given access to this book in exchange for an unbiased review, so my thanks to NetGalley and to Viz Media .
This is not my usual manga. The art style wasn't my fave but the story is amazing! I really enjoyed many of the characters in this manga! At first I wasn't a fan of the bullying but it is short lived, or rather, the main character gets a boost and is able to stand up for himself. I can not wait to continue and see where the story goes!
I struggled a lot to read this on the kindle. The format really didn't work which was a shame. Also the story jumps in quite suddenly and I found myself confused.
In a world where most of humanity is gifted with special powers called "Quirks", Izuku Midoriya, a young boy with no Quirk at all, dreams of becoming like the world's most famous hero, All Might. One day, All Might himself approaches Izuku and gives him the opportunity to become the hero he always envisioned, by sharing with the boy the powers of his own Quirk, "One for All", and enrolling him into the Yūei High School for heroes in training. Once enrolled, we follow Midoriya’s journey in becoming the world's greatest hero, making this a story you will not soon forget.
BNHA's unique blend of American and Japanese tropes and styles made this a far more refreshing and interesting read. From the major character development, engaging content and overall storyline, it became more than apparent as I read along why readers are so drawn to this manga series.
I will strongly advise picking this volume up as it is a great introductory piece to the manga and anime series. It will allow you as the reader to know the origins of Midoriya, his lack of powers, why he wants to become the next All Might and what led him to be the strong, inspiring superhero he has always dreamt of becoming.
Another solid manga for a great anime. I've watched the anime before reading this so this was nostalgic to read and relive the experience with Deku and the crew.
In Izuku Midoriya's world, most everyone is born with some sort of superpower. Unfortunately for Izuku, he's one of the few without any such power. This doesn't stop him from hoping, and from dreaming of attending the U. A. High School, a school specifically for training superheroes. After showing bravery despite his lack of quirk, the hero All-Might noticed Izuku and starts training him. All-Might reveals that one of the unique things about his gift is that he can pass it on to another person. If Izuku proves himself, All-Might will imbue him with power.
Izuku is sweet and a great main character, with a true heart and honest soul. Each character in the story is multi-faceted: All-Might can only use his power for three hours before he is transformed back into a puny, sickly guy; bully Katsuki has an insecure side to his cocky outward appearance. For most heroes, quirks come at a cost - it’s not just super power that lets them act overpowered forever. This is still a typical school-based story, but it has a great premise, and the world is well thought-out. I also enjoyed just how much is packed into one volume, and how so much happens on a single page. The art style is a beautiful blend of cartoony and detailed. The cover of volume one shows the cartoony elements in the way Izuku is drawn. The mangaka also made some sophisticated artistic choices with characters: All-Might and his puny self have different shading and shape to their eye cavities to demonstrate relative strength and ill-health.
VIZ rates this for Teen, and given that this series happens mostly at a high school with the trials and tribulations indicative of the age group, this age rating is appropriate. There is nothing in the first volume that wouldn't make this suitable for junior high audiences, aside from some fantasy violence.

I loved reading this manga. It was such a fun and interesting read and I can't wait to read more in this series!
Absolutely amazing start to what I anticipate being a very good series. I’ve already gone and purchased the digital versions of the next several volumes, and I’m very excited to continue with this series.
OMG, yes! I love this, so invested and am just yearning impatiently for more! So freaking awesome, I have no other words that are coming to mind that can express how truly I love I am falling for this new venture with great characters.
This was so fun and just what I wanted in a superhero training manga. I loved the tone of the narrative, which was funny and had some nice asides to the reader. I love the idea of a school specifically set up to train superheroes and the need to compete to get in made a lot of sense. The artwork was quite simplistic in style, which I liked, but on occasion it was a bit difficult to make out details and see fully what was happening. Our protagonist here is a bit irritating at times and some of the action was a bit repetitive but overall, I thought this was great!
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A fun anime/manga with a great art style, inspiring some of the most popular anime series of our generation.
Thank you NetGalley for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
So, I will be talking about this again when I wrap up the first two seasons of this anime, but I feel the same way about this volume that I felt about the overall anime.
This volume didn’t do anything for me. It was good, but it wasn’t good enough for me to want to continue. If it weren’t for the fact I know that it gets better, I probably wouldn’t have. But I know this manga will get better, so I will be continuing.
And there were definitely walls being broken in this manga, characters referring to art styles and it just makes me laugh every time a manga does that.

Absolutely love this series! This is the first volume and, boy, does it suck you right in! Deku is such a wonderful character full of determination and kindness. He dreams of being a hero, but unfortunately, has no superhuman abilities. But then he meets his hero, who shares a secret with him, he can still become a hero even with no powers. Can't wait to continue the story!
Thank you to Netgalley for giving me the chance to read and review, "My Hero Academia, Vol. 1" by Kohei Horikoshi. The formatting was really odd and cut off on the Kindle app. Besides these issues, the story is interesting and worth continuing. The art and the story-line keep things interesting.
I’ve seen this series around for a while, so I was excited when I saw it available on NetGalley. I loved this book!
In this world, there are many real superheroes. They each have a unique quirk, which they use to fight villains. If someone is going to have a quirk, they usually exhibit it by the age of four. Izuku has always wanted to be a superhero, but he doesn’t have any powers. When he meets one of the heroes, named All Might, he trains him to follow in his footsteps.
I love it when authors give some information on how they created their work. At the end of each chapter, there was a character profile, where the artist talked about how he created the character and what changes the character went through before publication. This was some great insight into his process. I also liked the page at the end of the book, which gave a shout out to the assistants who helped create the book. It was nice to see those people, who also worked hard on the book, get credit for their work.
I enjoyed this story. It moved along quickly, and was entertaining. I had no idea what to expect when I started reading this book. It lived up to the hype! I’m so glad I have many more volumes to read next!

My Hero Academia is a lovely story. It was great to see a superhero origin story in a manga and this whole culture of superheroes. I love the characters and the art!
