August is a very likeable young boy,and equally a likeable young man.
That's what keeps you reading I think.
A lot of the story ,well there isn't much happening.
That is I suppose life.
I enjoyed the book, but can't help but feel I'm missing something from it.
A slow moving story of a family who lived on a farm in Montana.
It charts the story of their son August growing up and how he tried to cope with the family splitting up.
Thank you to NetGalley and Granta Publications for my e-copy in exchange for an honest review.
A heartwarming tale, a coming of age story with a young boy named August at its heart. It takes place in the middle of the American West, somewhere in Michigan and Montana on remote an fictional farms which places all the action on the lives of the characters themselves.
It was interesting to see how August developed and changed with the major obstacles and challenges in life. Even life on the farm is tough. This is not your cosy country farm - farm from it! This is dry and remote land, hard to live on let alone farm on.
A tale of how to treat others, how to live with others and how to get through the tough times in life. I think this was a YA novel, certainly a coming of age one. A unique setting for a unique boy's story.
.I like novels set in the more remote parts of America and this one is evocative and interesting. August's parents are both well-drawn characters, as are Ancient and Tim - we can understand their motivations and desires. August to me seems to drift and live the life others shape for him. Throughout the novel I was expecting something life changing to happen but the story just drifted away and was slightly disappointing at the end.
