A bit gory, a bit crazy, very weird but also a lot of fun to read. At least for me. As soon as I finished reading I went looking for the second volume. Definitely not family-friendly or for everyone, but I at least enjoyed it. Fantastic artwork as well.
This was exceptional! This is Blade of the Immortal, Made In Abyss, and Attack On Titan all crammed in to one fascinating story. Gabimaru is a ninja on death row about to be executed for his crimes. He is instead recruited along with many other infamous outlaws to travel to a mysterious island in the search for the elixir of eternal life. This will not be an easy feat as the island inhabitants are bizarre twisted creatures that have even more bizarre and twisted was of killing these outlaw intruders on "Hell's Paradise". This was a great read and a very interesting world I look forward to devouring the rest of the series.

Drop dead (no pun intended) art and lines, with a premise that's a delightful blend of horror and fantasy. This is what my dreams are made of! Hell's Paradise is one that's easy to pitch to adult manga fans who are looking for something slick and who won't shy away from some body horror. I'm looking forward to seeing where this series goes!
This book is a lot more graphic and gruesome than one might expect judging from the cover. I'm one who generally enjoys gore and bloodshed in books and movies, but it wasn't my absolute favourite in this manga for some reason. There is horror here, which I also generally enjoy, but this was the type of horror that actually gets under my skin (pun intended) because it has to do with changes made to the body in a gruesome way. I won't say more on that, so as to avoid spoiling things. The story itself is interesting and has me intrigued, but probably not enough to pick up the next volume. I was hoping that one or more of the characters would keep me hooked, but that was unfortunately not the case. As for the illustrations themselves, they were crisp and the style was perfect for depicting the brutality that happens in this first volume. I can see this one becoming a favourite for manga readers who enjoy violence, gore, and horror!
I am back and forth when it comes to this manga. On one hand, it has an interesting mix of fantasy and historical fiction. On the other, the violence and gore are not what I usually gravitate towards when reading manga. The plot, however, was intriguing enough to get me through this volume and make me interested in reading the next one.
I don't know what it is, but horror manga is not hitting the mark for me these days. I did not like or connect with any of the characters in this story.
I love shonen manga but I’ve found that lots of it can be generic and gratuitous. Heavy on the boobs and gore.
This was a good departure from that and also had some humor sprinkled in. The story was interesting and I did enjoy the ride. If I see this around I’ll probably read more but it’s not so much a series I am actively seeking.
Thanks much to Netgalley for this ARC.
t's a very interesting and unique storyline. It has lots of gore and horror in it. I love the main character's attitude towards others and being a ninja. For those experienced with manga and anime it has a very similar tone to Attack on Titan.
While this book was pretty good, it just wasn't for me. Not a bad thing though! This book is really fast paced so I did get a little bit confused in the middle there but I was still able to figure out what was going on well enough that I understood where the story was going. Also, just an fyi that this book is very violent and gory - I don't mind that aspect of it. I generally enjoy gory manga so it was actually a plus for me. The artwork was pretty good too and I felt like it didn't subtract from the story. I think I will be checking out volume two just to see where the story goes because now I'm curious. Overall, if you like fantasy or horror manga then I think you will like this volume.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. *
Okay, I picked this one up on a whim and ended up loving it. It is dark, gritty, bloody, and the beginning of a promising series. Action fills the pages and even though this is a new world and different rules, it never felt like the information was dumped on us. The tension remains throughout as this journey is life or death. And yet, there are still many humorous moments to keep the darkness from overwhelming the book.
I'm hooked. Recommended to people who like darker manga.
A manga full of violence and gore, but I was drawn to it. The convicts and their escorts and the weird island, most of all the art style is good enough to draw me in.
For starters, the protagonist is absolutely hilarious. It’s one sarcastic quip after the other and he just want to die and for such heavy subject matter, I just couldn’t help but laughing the entire time that I was reading this. To top it all off, the first line of this manga is “Decapitation demands exemplary sword technique.” If that doesn’t make you want to read this manga, then there’s really nothing else I can say that will.
2.5 stars
The artwork was great and the premise showed great promise. But I had a hard time getting into the story and wasn't feelin it on the end.
Sorry..

This title was not for me. Although the book offered action and thrills, it sometimes became super hard to follow. The story has a interesting description, but the cells of this manga became sloppy at times with incomplete drawing that added to the confusion.
The story follows a shogun named Gabimaru the Hollow as he makes a journey to an island that's between heaven and hell. He begins his journey after being betrayed and sentenced to death. But Gabimaru can cheat death of he can retrieve an elixir that will make him immortal.
Perfect for those who are looking for a manga that's heavy on the action.
This was a graphic manga, trigger warning for violence. It had an interesting concept but I didn't enjoy how the manga unfolded.
This is the start of a very blood adventure!
Gabimaru is a notorious unkillable ninja who gets himself into an unfortunate predicament. In order to regain what he wants most, he first has to accomplish a nearly impossible task. This manga is very bloody and graphic. But the images flow with the mood of the story which makes it predictable. It moves at a quick pace and sets the arc for the coming volumes.
I'm excited to see whats to come in this series!
The art style of Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku grabbed my attention as much as the summary. I really like it! The cover is simply stunning! Maybe the art quality is a little inconsistent inside, but hopefully that will resolve itself in future volumes as the mangaka settles into the characters. I still found it lovely, and it didn't much take away from the book.
I tend to enjoy horror with a splash of ridiculousness, which this captures. It's violent, and engaging, and made me want to keep reading. I was definitely drawn in by the storyline and characters, and I look forward to the next volume.
This was quite different than what I was expecting, but I liked it. Both main character have already shown significant character growth. This "paradise" seems insane and I really can't wait to read the next volume!
I liked the art style but there were some of the action scenes where I couldn't really tell what happened.
This manga was not for me, but it is quite the adventure! It's packed full of action and thrills throughout the entire book.
If you're looking for a mature manga with a constantly, fast moving pace then this book is up your alleyway! Gabimaru, a famous and brutal assassin, tries to earn his freedom and escape his circumstances. His quest lets him murder anyone, and do what he pleases to earn back his freedom as long as he meets the requirements set out for him.
There's lots of violence and gore throughout this book. It didn't bother me at all, but for some reason this book just didn't click with me. I can't quite put a reason on it. Either way, I still think it's mighty cool! It's definitely an adult manga, which I've been craving more of lately.
I did think the art style was pretty cool. That drew my attention in and helped me finish this book.
Three out of five stars.

The story and artwork were truly captivating. There is a lot going on in this first volume, and the author does a great job of covering everything without bogging the story or pace down. The whole people turning into flowers thing his horrifying. Regardless of his past, you can't help but feel for Gabimaru...especially when compared to the rest of the criminals stuck on the island with him. While he isn't remorseful for his past, he is trying to be a better person. I can't wait to read the next volume to find out what happens next on the island.
