A story of marriages set amongst a crime.
The setting is an English village, Ashridge Falls. The novel is told from the points of view (POVs) of three friends since their school days, Kelly, Fiona .and Tia. Their perfect lives, families and friendships are tested as this book continues. Amidst the three perspectives is a shorter paragraph in italics.
Shalini Boland has done the unthinkable by writing each POV in the first person. In most other novels, a primary protagonist is written in the first person, or more rarely in the second person, while other characters are written in the third person. The author’s approach in One Of Us Is Lying works because each chapter is titled with the protagonist’s name, and because the three friends have different lives. However, their voices are not distinct, as there is not much character delineation between Fiona, Kelly and Tia.
The three women’s troubles start by being broadcast to Kelly and Tia, via their respective children. At other times they are threatened via anonymous texts, and then there’s an arrest. Tia and Fiona are hiding a secret, while Kelly is sworn to secrecy about her act of generosity. That Kelly’s good deed eventually backfires on her is not a spoiler as it is made clear at the outset that the unusual circumstances can only lead to trouble for her. One has to suspend belief when it turns out that a stranger knows the characters’ private mobile numbers and not one of them blinks an eye. Cell phone numbers are not searchable like Facebook or Instagram.
With secrets and confidences to keep, none of the women opens up to the others about the frightening turn of events. Two start to mistrust each other, putting their husbands at the centre of their insecurity.
There is a lot of “Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty in this book, not least the small community of women and school pickups and drop-offs. However, it isn’t as well written, with clauses that lack a verb making a series of so-called sentences, making the reader reread passages that didn’t make sense as a result.
It was a good mystery, without a murder at the centre thank goodness. A domestic psychological suspense, that was a fast read. I recommend One Of Us Is Lying.
Thank you to NetGalley, Shalini Boland and Bookouture for my advanced Ebook in exchange for an honest review.

It will appear in Amazon.com when the book is published.
Three women, who have been friends for many years, begin to have strange things happening to them. A rumor circulates at the school Tia’s children attend. Kelly, who is widowed, befriends a stranger who appears at her door and seems to be in some sort of trouble. And Fiona, who owns a design business, is the target of a tax audit. None of the women have any idea who is behind these bizarre events or if they are even related.
One of Us is Lying is told from all three points of view. The story is fast-paced, with several twists. It is a well-plotted book that has good characters that are believable and interesting, and there is just the right amount of suspense throughout the story. I have enjoyed all of the books I’ve read by Ms Boland and this book is no exception. Even though I had somewhat figured out the ending, it was still a good read and well-worth the time.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
I love when books have chapters written in different people's perspective! This one was almost like 3-books-in-1, as each of the 3 friends had almost a whole separate storyline. (I had to keep reminding myself who-was-who at the beginning.) I loved how the writing made you assume things that may or may not be true, or so you never REALLY know what's happening. I like how it all tied together at the end, though I would have liked to know how Kelly's husband died! (This isn't a spoiler as it is revealed very early-on that Kelly is a single mom.)
Wonderful, I will definitely be reading more of Shalini Boland's work!
This is a great book about three friends who have known each other for many years; Kelly, Tia,and Fiona. Strange things start to happen to all three friends and their lives are turned upside down. There are lots of twists as the story unfolds and the author brings it to a surprising ending. This author never fails to please and this is no exception.
Thanks to Net Galley for allowing me to read this amazing book for my honest review.
One Of Us Is Lying by Shalini Boland . Told from the perspective of three women, Kelly, Fiona and Tia and how their lives were interwoven and the secret that ties them together. Had difficulty in keeping the characters straight during the changeover in the different POVs. Felt no connection the characters and no anticipation for a twist in the end. An interesting enough story but not the page turner of the author's previous books.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
Shalini Boland is a writer that always delivers. her twisty, psychological thrillers are addictive, quick reads and One Of Us Is Lying ticks all those boxes and more.
3 women - Kelly, Fiona .and Kelly - all friends from school. All have the perfect lives - or do they? Each of these women is hiding a secret and somebody knows. Strange things start happening and they start receiving threatening messages. Whoever it is is determined to make them pay for what they did, to destroy their lives. But who is it?
Thank you Bookouture and Netgalley for mt advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
This book was a page turner! This story follows 3 ladies, all who grew up together and were best friends when they were younger and has they have this secret.
Fast forward to the present day, these 3 ladies have their own lives/family and each one are presented with a problem- not knowing where it is stemming from. I love how this book really showcases that sometimes, you just can't run away from your past, that sometimes, someone is out there feeling the repercussions from certain decisions made decades ago and all the while, plotting to take revenge.
I really liked this book. This book had so many different main characters, but the author, Shalini Boland, did a wonderful job of allowing these characters to shine. I didn't feel lost in the chapters as each chapter was being told from one of the main character's point of view.
I give this book a 4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this, and the plot twist had me turning the page to find out- who is this person???? Thank you Net Galley for allowing me to review this wonderful Arc. Excited to see what else this author has!
*3.5 stars*
Tia, Fiona, and Kelly have been friends since high school. They're successful women with families and rosy futures - until ominous things begin to happen to them. Mysterious, threatening text messages surface. Fiona's interior design business is hit with a surprise audit. And a strange young woman appears on Kelly's doorstep, seeking shelter without revealing why, or who she's running from.
I found it hard to get through the first few chapters of this thriller, simply because it felt like there were too many characters to familiarize myself with. Each woman has her own family, co-workers, other school moms, etc. Once I began to recognize who was who, however, this story was certainly engaging!
I don't want to give any spoilers, but I did feel the motivation behind what was happening rather weak, especially since some of the relationships to the past event were indirect. It also seemed to wrap up a bit neater than I would have liked.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC.
Tia , someone sent her photographs and makes her wondering who wants to destroy her marriage.
Fiona, she owns her own interior design business and someone might tip her off sending a tax auditor to ruin her business.
Kelly, a stranger comes to her house and she ends up letting her stay with her. Her trust doesn't end up well.
Secrets, revenge and friendship in one book.
A must read thriller.
THANKS Netgalley for an e electronic ARC.
Shalini Boland's latest release, One Of Us Is Lying, is a relatively fast-paced mystery. Set in scenic Ashridge Falls the book features three best friends-each with a secret. In similar fashion to Boland's earlier stories there are a few twists and turns as you navigate through the pages. The three main characters, Tia, Kelly and Fiona, are decently developed and the story is told from each of their perspectives. The reader has a chance to get to know each woman individually and try to tie the missing links together. Boland's earlier books, in particular The Other Daughter and The Marriage Betrayal, are more gripping and suspenseful and lacked that jaw dropping twist.
Thank you to the writer, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
This fast paced thriller was absolutely riveting from page one. This is my 2nd book by this author. I have to say that she has her pacing down to a science. It is really fast paced and engaging without getting too confusing. I highly recommend this book for thriller lovers!
One of us Is Lying is a book full of secrets, revenge, family and friendship.
Other than the revenge what could go wrong.
It is a story of 3 friends who's friendship has carried them through the years .
Things seem to be going well for Fiona, Tee and Kelly until they each get a threat in one form or another and none of them can afford this secret to get out.
The story is told from all 3 of their perspectives.
Secrets have a way of festering; perhaps leading to revenge?
Another great story by Shalini Boland. Add this to your pile of TBR you wont be disappointed.
Thanks to Net Galley and Bookouture for another great read.
This was a quick read. The story centers around three girl friends who shared everything growing up but now as adults, they’ve become immersed in their own lives and don’t connect as often. When strange things start happening, they each wonder if one of their own friend is targeting them. I was a little disappointed in how it wrapped up and I had the hardest time trying to keep all the characters straight. I’m a fan of Shalini Boland but this one was meh.
I definitely don't like first person narratives. So, from the moment I started this book, I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it.
Apart from that detail, I found One of Us is Lying too predictable. At one point I was hoping for a grand finale, and this kept me going, but it never came and all my suspicions were on point.
The characters were so bland that I couldn't tell one from the other. I had to keep going back to check whose chapter it was.
I was truly hoping for another hit from Shalini Boland, but unfortunately I didn't love it.
Thanks, NetGalley, for sending me this ARC!
This is another great read by author Shalini Boland that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Each chapter is told from the point of view of alternating lifetime friends, Kelly, Tia or Fiona. The women still live in the small sea-side town they grew up in where everyone knows everyone. After a strange young woman appears at Kelly's window one day, strange things begin to happen. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this very exciting book in exchange for an honest review.
I have read a lot of Shalini Boland books, I like them because they are quick reads with stories that draw you in and keep you guessing with the twists and turns.
Unfortunately this book was missing something.
The slow pace at the beginning and different point of views made it hard to get around all the characters. The second half was definitely better than the first and I flew through that when the action picked up.
It was okay but not my favourite book from this author.
To begin, I’d like to thank Bookouture for sending me an ARC of this book, and to NetGalley for facilitating. And a huge thank you to Shalini Boland for the immersive page turner!
No spoilers as usual in this review.
This is the first Shalini Boland book I have read (soon to be rectified) & I was so impressed with it! And deeply disappointed in myself that this is Boland’s 10th thriller and yet I had not paid any attention until now.
The characters were complex and all hiding secrets (which is what makes books like this so “un-put-down-able”). The pace was set very well and instantly launched into the main meat of the story without too much preamble! It was a very tense book which obviously kept me turning the pages!
I really enjoyed the style of writing as it was in keeping with the genre and also very relaxed. There was nothing pretentious about it (which I have found with some books like this), the storyline is the main focus rather than the flowery writing (which is exactly as it should be in a thriller)!
I loved the way the story started, immediately pulling you into the mystery and it just progressed from there with plenty of questions being thrown up in each page and adding a lot of drama... eventually the drama climaxes and settles with a satisfying ending! It’s not “groundbreaking” and not necessarily going to top the charts but it was very enjoyable and easy to read!
In summary: Brilliant, page-turner of a book! I am now about to go and real all of Shalini Boland’s previous books...
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book.
Having read other books by this author I was very excited to get started on this book. It did not disappoint!
Three friends Kelly, Tia and Fiona - all with their own lives and families live on the lakeside Ashridge Estate, a strong community where everyone knows everyone.
Out of nowhere, text messages start arriving to each of the three friends and unexpected people pop up, along with rumours in the school playground. Someone is out to cause havoc with the three friends and soon it becomes apparent that this is a revenge plot for something that happened in school many years ago.
It’s a gripping storyline and I couldn’t put the book down sometimes. I really felt for the characters and could empathise with them throughout the book.
Without him giving too much away, the ending was ever so slightly underwhelming, but still thoroughly enjoyable.
Good storyline, with strong characters, but predictable. I guessed the ending about halfway through the book.
I did enjoy this book, and I am a huge fan of this author. Three women who have been friends since teenagers have their lives thrown into turmoil as someone is determined to wreak revenge for past deeds. It was certainly an entertaining and interesting read with quite a few twists and surprises.
