3 stars — eerie setup with good suspense, but the payoff didn’t quite hit home.”

The Apartment starts strong with a chilling premise: a grieving woman and her young daughter move into a mysterious, too-good-to-be-true apartment. Naturally, unsettling things begin happening almost immediately, and the tension slowly creeps in as secrets about the building—and its residents—unravel.

K.L. Slater does a great job creating a sense of unease, and the story is definitely bingeable with short, punchy chapters and a quick pace. However, while the setup is solid and the atmosphere is creepy, the twists and resolution felt a bit underwhelming. Some parts were predictable, and a few characters could have been fleshed out more.

Still, it’s a decent psychological thriller for fans of slow-burn suspense with a sinister edge. Not my favorite from Slater, but enjoyable if you’re in the mood for something tense and twisty.

Very creepy and an interesting twist I didn't see coming. Frustrating at points so not my favourite but it kept my interest and I was keen to see how it ended.

This was an amazing read, although while reading I couldnt help thinking that the character was just a little too gullible!

K.L. Slater’s The Apartment is a chilling and fast-paced psychological thriller that keeps you questioning what’s lurking beneath the surface. The story follows Freya, a single mother desperate for a fresh start, who stumbles upon an unbelievable opportunity: a luxurious apartment in the exclusive Adder House at a suspiciously low rent. Freya and her young daughter, Skye, move in, but it quickly becomes clear that their new home holds dark secrets—and they may have walked into a trap.

Slater’s knack for crafting atmospheric tension shines here, as Adder House itself becomes an ominous character, its eerie halls and unsettling residents adding to the suspense. Freya is a sympathetic and relatable protagonist, and her determination to protect Skye makes the stakes feel personal and urgent.

The plot is tightly wound, with a slow build that leads to shocking twists and a climactic finale. While some twists may feel familiar to avid thriller readers, Slater injects enough unique elements to keep the story fresh and gripping. Themes of trust, manipulation, and the lengths people go to for control are explored with an unsettling intensity.

The Apartment is an addictive, page-turning read perfect for fans of psychological suspense and domestic thrillers. If you enjoy books with creepy settings, unreliable characters, and jaw-dropping reveals, this one is sure to keep you up at night.

'The Apartment' is a brilliant, thrilling and enticing read. I was hooked from the beginning by the writing style and knowing there was going to be more than meets the eye. As the book progresses we have Slater's usual twists and turns and it made for exciting reading. I particularly enjoyed the psychology link to this book.
The characters are excellent, I connected with Freya and Skye and it was a joy to get to know them and their story. The other characters serve their purpose brilliantly.
Overall this was an adrenaline filled thriller.

Not too shabby of a psychological thriller! I liked the slow-burn build up of tension throughout the novel and how the author slowly revealed more and more of the backstory to Adder House as we went along. I am also studying Psychology at the moment, so the fact that his was based on the Little Albert study that I have myself studied was a really cool tie-in for me. The one thing that I wish we would have gotten some clarity on, was what happened to the MCs ex-husband. Did he die of natural causes, or were the main protagonists of this novel behind his death?

The Apartment by KL Slater is a psychological thriller and features, Freya Miller and her daughter Skye. Freya’s husband left her for another woman and then died soon after. Which meant that Freya had to sell her house and move to another area with her daughter.
She is approached one day by a man in a cafe one day, who was going to pin a notice on the board and also leave notices on the tables that there was a room to let and a subsidised rent for the right tenants.
Freya and Skye, then move to Adder House in a fashionable area of London paying a peppercorn rent to Dr Marsden, the man she met at the cafe. Things take on an unexpected turn with the flat and Freya realises that not everything is as it should be, placing her self and Skye in danger.
Recommended.

I’m not sure how I feel about this one still. I liked it while I was reading it but I found it very forgettable. I did really like the characters and the story line.

This is the true definition of a psychological thriller. This one will make you doubt what you think you know or are being told.

The story sucks you right in and gets right to it. I would highly recommend the audiobook that was written with this in mind.

The author interview was also excellent to understand where the story originated.

Fast paced, psychological thriller that centers around Freya and the apartment she is renting. Strange things start happening and chaos ensues. I was hopeful for more twist and turns and they just weren't there for me. This reminded me a of Karin Slaughter or Megan Miranda book. Without the big twist, this felt lacking and I was left wanting more. 3.5 stars because I still needed to know what happened.

Freya Miller has a lot on her plate. After the fallout of her husband's affair, she is about to lose her family home. Wanting security for her 5 year old daughter, Skye, she takes up an offer from someone she meets, Dr. Marsden. He is looking for a new tenant for one the flats at Adder House, it's affordable for Freya and it's in a very nice area of London. After Freya and Skye move in, things do not appear as one would think. Freya feels like she is being watched, and hears strange noises. Freya begins to look into the previous tenant and is shocked and very concerned for not only her well-being but her daughter Skye's as well.

I enjoyed this psychological thriller, it kept my interest. K.L. Slater is becoming one of my go-to authors.

When tragedy strikes and her husband unexpectedly dies, Freya is at a hit of a loss for next steps. One day, a man approaches her in a coffee shop while she is browsing through the postings for places to stay. He mentions that they have an apartment for rent at their beautiful home in the perfect neighborhood. It was seemingly too good to be true.

When Freya moves in with her young daughter, curious things start happening and she has to question if this was the right decision at all.

This was entertaining and I would suggest it!

Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.

This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.

A classic example of something being too good to be true. Freda Miller needs a miracle. She has been betrayed by her husband. Her living conditions force her to accept housing in a luxurious section of London for a laughable rate. Once inside the complex, things begin to happen. Unexplained and scary, Freda starts to question if these things are imagined or real. The Dr is a bit too nice to be believed. It’s a good into read , it goes quick, as a thriller.

Book kept me interested the entire way through , but the ending left me a bit disappointed. It was a surprise, but kind of felt a bit rushed and left me with a few questions

Good read though

Absolutely love KL Slater. You know your always in for a bloody good read, with plenty of turns and twists that you never see coming.
This is why physcologocical thrillers are the best genre by far.

The story is about a woman named Freya, who along with her daughter Skye, receive an offer to move into an apartment that ends up not being the best choice. K.L. Slater is one of my favorite authors and I did enjoy The Apartment, but overall I rated it 3/5 stars.
