I loved the idea of this book when I saw it and know it would make an awesome gift for foodies and fantasy fans! Who hasn't wanted to taste the delights seen on screen or read in books....?

Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Getting geeky and getting tipsy seem to be a perfect match. I would definitely get myself a copy of this and gift it to my fellow geeks.

This book is so much fun, it not only provides great ideas for geeky cocktails but also it is so fun to notice the association of the drinks with its respective franchise. I already ordered a physical copy. Great work!

I thought this was the coolest little cocktail book I've ever seen. I was not a big fan of the cover just because I would've liked something a bit more colorful but the inside pictures more than make up for it. The range of inspiration these cocktails drew from was astounding. I was ready for anything GOT related naturally. I wish I had thought to take pics of the Butterbeer one I made but it was so good I couldn't pace myself lol! I loved, loved, LOVED the Bob's Burgers and Star Wars inspired drinks. This would be a great conversation/coffee table book for sure.

The cocktails in this book were inventive and creative. The array of fandoms were equally represented by those who love these types of cookbooks. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves bar-tending, sampling cocktails, and anything science fiction/fantasy.

Geeky Bartender Drinks

For fans from 8 to 80, Cassandra Reeder’s The Geeky Bartender Drinks has something for everyone. With fun facts to link each cocktail to our favorite series/movies/comics this book is as much fun to read through as it is to experiment with the drinks!

My son loves to mix cocktails, and we agree, we love the table of contents. Thoughtfully sorted by genre, and prefaced by recipes for syrups and garnishes, Reeder has structured this book so it’s easy to use and easy to reverence.

We made a bunch of these delicious cocktails, but by far our favorites were:

Romulan Ale
Inspired by Star Trek, this cocktail truly looks like something served in one of those off-planet bars I remember from watching this series. Plus it’s incredibly delicious and only a Romulan could drink more than a few of these. They pack a serious punch!

Sonic Screwdriver
Delicious, and super easy to make, the Sonic Screwdriver is a nod to Doctor Who, who always carried his “sonic screwdriver” as his go-to tool. Plus, the addition of blue curacao and orange seltzer makes this one very refreshing.

Ambrosia
Inspired by my all-time favorite, Battlestar Galactica, Ambrosia is strong and a bit syrupy, but sweet and tart, and a very pretty green!

With cocktails that are colorful, tasty, and pack a very solid punch, Geeky Bartender Drinks is a winner!

The Geeky Chef Drinks is one of a pair of fandom based recipe collections by Cassandra Reeder, the Geeky Chef. Released 5th May 2020 by Quarto on their Race Point imprint, it's 160 pages and available in hardcover and ebook formats.

I am really impressed and mildly amazed at the broad array of drinks (both alcoholic and non) from a very broad array of literary and cultural icons as disparate as World of Warcraft, LotR, Harry Potter, Red Dwarf ( <3 ), Pern, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 1984, Redwall, and more more more. The Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is here, because of course it is, but less expected were Rakajino, Nuka-Cola Quantum, and Oosquai.

The book includes syrups and partial ingredients for making the drinks as well as glassware and treatments such as ice effects, rimmiing the barware, citrus peels, and flambe to impress. The recipes themselves are easy to read and understand. They include a header bar along with prep info, yields and a description. Ingredients are listed bullet point in a sidebar. Measurements are given in US standard measures with metric measures in parentheses. Preparation instructions are enumerated step by step. Substitutions and alternative preparation or serving information are given in a footer bar at the end of the recipe.

The book includes a cross referenced index which lists individual ingredients (and authors/literary references). The photography and illustration included in the book are -wonderful-, and the nerdy geeky commentary is amazing. The author is a geek, indeed.

Really really worthwhile effort and a great collection. This would elevate the next D&D or LAN or geeky movie night (when we're allowed to safely gather again) to the next level for sure.

Five stars. Shut up and take my money!!

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes. (But am seriously buying my own copy with my own money).

I thought this was such a great drinks book. I love the different geeky ways to make drinks. I also liked how at the beginning they gave information on the different parts of making drinks. I like all of the references to all sorts of fandoms and can not wait to trying some of the drinks myself.

Such a treat! Learning about the science behind the flavor combinations in popular cocktails was fascinating, and has made me a better home mixologist...which we all need to master these days!

I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley andthe publishers.

This book is cram packed full of amazingly put together, creative drinks that sound deliciously mouth watering! The author has obviously put alot of effort into this book and these drinks.
Each drink has a short description accompanying it along with a picture of the drink and all the drinks featured are fantasy and sci-fi related which is ideal for book and film buffs!
If your looking for a drinks book which is unique, I definitely recommend this one!

This is an ideal companion to the cookbook by the same author. I love these sort of books for their novelty alone, but they also inspire a motivation to own a full stocked bar at home.

I think I’ve just found my new favourite cocktail book! Inspired by geek culture, this features ‘potions’ and cocktails from a range of video games, books, and tv shows. For example, the author’s take on Shimmerwine as mentioned (just mentioned, briefly!) in Firefly. Or Giggle Juice from Fantastic Beasts. Romulan Ale, of course! Or just your generic red/blue/green potion from any number of games. Each recipe begins with a note about the inspiration, and the humour evident in these is worth the read by themselves.

I love love LOVE the presentation – the usual glasses, etc, but also flasks and potion bottles. The book opens with a set of tips and tricks to make the presentation really zing, from rimming the glass to actual ‘special effects’ (e.g. edible glitter), and the photography is excellent in capturing the sense of the magical about all of these.

I hugely appreciate the approach, which is very much as simple as possible, not too many expensive bells and whistles. So, minimal required kit, and not too many outlandish ingredients – just outlandish inspiration! Sections are wonderful titled Magical Elixirs, Sci-Fi Spirits, etc, and a Comedic section that’s a bit less SFF. There’s even a set of non-alcoholic options, which are equally imaginative.

Much as I love cocktails, I’ve never felt quite so inspired. I soooo want to host my next board game night (yes, yes, I am a giant geek!) and impress everyone with some pretty concoctions. I think little inner 6-year-old me who sort of wanted to be a witch and make potions has found an outlet…!

Recommended – it’s huge amounts of fun and looks so good!

Cassandra Reeder, self-proclaimed lifelong geek, has been making recipes from favorite games, movies and TV shows since she became The Geeky Chef in 2008 (www.geekychef.com). In The Geeky Bartender, she turns her eye to mixology with a fun and irreverent set of tips and recipes for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages inspired by video games (Legend of Zelda, World of Warcraft), books (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones), movies (Star Wars, The Big Lebowski, The Blues Brothers) and television shows (Dr. Who, Star Trek, Brooklyn 99).

Starting with a few tips (get a shaker, embrace bitters, use syrups), Reeder also encourages adjusting ratios to suit one's own taste. When it comes to geeky beverages, it's about fun and paying homage to the geeky things we love. Before jumping in to drink recipes, Reeder provides some syrup concoctions that are referenced throughout. These can also generally be purchased, so no one need worry about inadequate kitchen skills.

Each drink recipe references the source material that influenced it, a brief description and simple instructions, accompanied by fabulous photographs that help drum up enthusiasm and desire. It's easy to imagine a bunch of friends gathering to play a game or binge a favorite show while mixing up the accompanying drink. Bright, pleasing to the eye and hopefully pleasing to the palate, this is a great reference book to have on the bar or displayed on the coffee table. Open a page, mix the drink, watch the matching show or play the game. Like spin the bottle for adult fans of pop culture. I'm in.

My husband has become quite the home bartender. He regularly makes us mixed drinks so I am regularly looking out for good cocktail books. I was intrigued by the title thinking it would go more in depth into methods or ingredients. Instead, I found a book with themed recipes for science fiction books, movies, and tv shows. It's a very cute and creative book, but we were not the ideal market as we had only seen two of the referenced movies. It would be a great gift item for the geek in your life.

This is a great fun book for any aspiring cocktail makers who have a geeky side.
The book is full of alcoholic and non alcoholic recipes based on drinks featured in video games, movies, TV shows and books. It also has instructions for creating basic syrups and special effects to make your drinks even more exciting.
Being neither a maker of cocktails or a big lover of the majority of references in this book meant I wouldn't get the most out of it but it would be perfect for anyone looking to fancy up their cocktail repertoire.
Many recipes would require you to stock up your liquor cabinet though as I only really found 1 or 2 recipes that I would have the required ingredients to hand and they were non alcoholic ones.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley.com and Race Point Publishing.

The Geeky Bartender is such a fun cocktail book with loads of cocktails inspired by your favorite books, shows, and video games. Huge praise to this book for having an alcohol free section and everything seems very straight forward and easy to manage. Overall, very impressed.

From the author of The Geeky Chef Cookbook comes this companion volume of mixed drinks. If you're ever wanted to make your own Moonglow from World of Warcraft, or Mudder's Milk from Firefly, this is the cookbook for you. Reeder covers a wide array of genres, including games, books, TV, and movies. Drink recipes are easy to follow and generally contain normal, easy-to-obtain ingredients. Cool photographs of the finished drink with related backgrounds accompany each recipe. For non-drinking geeks, there are even tips to (ahem) virginize your cocktails.
