The most powerful non-fiction book I read in years. I was reading a lot of scientific books about organization and management but none of them made me feel that I as a woman can reach the top in the male-dominated industry. I’m studying Logistics Engineering, which is considered a male profession, so I was very happy to read this book and see what’s awaiting me in the future and how to prepare for it. Hira Ali guided us through topics like FOMO (The Fear of Missing Out), Impostor Syndrome, perfectionism, stress, workplace harassment and many more subjects that are important to understand the true nature of feminism and how important it is for a woman to fight for their rights.
The book is fully filled with many pieces of advice that are very helpful to understand what is holding us down from being on the top. Moreover, it contains many amazing examples from the various sources that may help a woman to change their lives. Besides the guidance the book also contains a lot of valuable quantitative data that shows that the issue with equality between men and women still exists. It was very surprising to see all these numbers being so high in the times where our economy is so highly developed.
Another interesting aspect of the book is about working mothers. The book contains a lot of tips for the mothers that struggle to balance their work with motherhood. It’s a major issue that touches many women all around the world, so these kinds of information is essential. Even for me, 21 years old student, this kind of information is ensuring that I don’t need to be so afraid about the future.
The message this book sends is very crucial and powerful. We are the only person who holds us down. We need to leave the fear behind and start fighting. We need to stop judging each other and support one another to reach our goals. The word needs to be spread so don’t waste your time and keep yourself informed. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are not enough. Fight for your future.
This book should be read by every single woman in the world. I don’t understand why it has so little reviews because it deserves so much more attention. Well, I’m lucky that I found this book and now I can spread the word to you guys! I would like to thank NetGalley, Hira Ali and Panoma Press from the bottom of my heart for providing me this book. It was a journey I will never forget.
A great collection of actual experiences of a working woman who climbs the corporate ladder and worth taking inspiration from in terms of empowerment, growth, and confidence. For those who can't blindly believe the words of a single person, the book also encompasses various surveys to get a wider view yet more specific ideologies to go by for the most promising & successful development.
A somewhat misleading title: This book presents itself as a 'a guide to smashing the glass ceiling', but is more a long narrative story of the author and the other wide range of women's experiences in the workplace combined with commentary for what to or not to do. If it was a guide, I would expect it to have a breakdown per chapter of what to do. It can of course include an anecdote, but call out more clearly what to do and a short summary at the end of each chapter.
Secondly, as not all women are mothers, it would be helpful to have an indication which chapters are for which women (if it wants to be a guide for me as a woman, as that part isn't applicable).
While the author has a rich experience and has researched the subject, further copy editing could have been done prior to the release in terms of structuring the content, reducing some of the anecdotes, and be clearer of key points for what to do in order to become a guide. If as a woman I am interested in breaking the glass ceiling (as yes, I do encounter some of the issues mentioned in the book), I am not much the wiser from the book, so would not recommend it to others for this reason.
Her Way to the Top is a book that is to meant to help women find their value in themselves and then use that knowledge along with some other ideas Ms. Ali has learned along her career as a coach. She points out the more common issues working women face and suggestions on how to overcome.
This is a great read for all women, as it really encompasses what it is like for us in the workforce when it comes to getting ahead. The author wrote an amazing guide to empowerment. And unlike other books about women and their careers, this one didn't focus solely on office culture, as not every woman works in an office. It was a refreshing change to read a book that focused on any career a woman may choose, not just the corporate office one.
