This book is not just for someone who is Christian. It is for anyone admiring architecture, beauty, the cleverness in construction and the skills and the eye that goes into making something not just a building but something of extra ordinary beauty.

Images of over 150 churches, basilicas, chapels and cathedrals are not just beautiful on the outside but stunning on the inside as well.

From huge structures, to very simple churches, this book encompasses it all.

Beautiful images, overview and snippets of history.

Growing up my whole family was Catholic. For as long as I remember, if we went to church, I would look around at the architecture. Even on trips, I would see churches and think of how pretty they are. I really appreciated the photographs in this books - they truly were amazing and beautiful. Plus, being stuck at home and looking at these pictures made me feel like I was going on a world vacation.

Thank you NetGalley for providing me a copy of this beautiful book.

I was always fascinated with churches and temples. Wherever I travel, I insist on looking in at least one of that country's shrines. I am a devout Catholic living in a two thousand years old city, and I find something comforting and soothing in old churches where many generations of believers prayed to Lord for thousand of years or more.

I am really glad for an opportunity the publisher and Net Galley gave me to take a look at this book. Wow. The photographs inside are absolutely stunning. Even the front cover photograph takes a breath away. The notes beside each of the photograph are also interesting and thought provoking. They enticed me to do some further research online, because who knows? Maybe that country, that city and that church will be my next travel destination!

I liked that every continent was equally represented, but I wish there was more of Europe out of British isles. There were even ten churches built on British Isles, and only four in France and Italy each (baffling considering how many extraordinarily beautiful churches Italy alone has). The other European countries had even fewer representatives, some hadn't a single one (mine included. At first I felt insulted, but then, even Portugal had only one church presented). I figure same can be said for other continents too, however, other continents do not have so old history of Christianity and churches on their landmass as Europe does. I would suggest, if there would be any plans for other editions of the book in the future - add more churches of old Europe! That would make sense considering churches are so ingrained in the European history and culture.

Still, this is really beautiful coffee table book, and I would gladly gift it to someone equally appreciating the art and history of the churches represented in the book. I would buy it for myself too.

Churches have always been a place of beauty. I love going in to churches. The older the better. The newer churches are not more than buildings. But oh the pride and love put into the older ones is just phenomenal. This book takes you on a tour of Churches all over the world. There are huge ones and small ones. There are highly decorated, and some not so much, but there is beauty in each and every one of them.

The pictures of stunning. Full color shots, of both inside and out. The book is broken down by continent. There is a small except telling you the name of the church and where it is for each picture. Some tell you when they were built, if there is a famous moment in time surrounding the church. There are over 100 Churches, Cathedrals, Chapels, and Basilicas shown in this book.

I received this book from the Author or Publisher via Netgalley.com and chose to leave this review.

Lovely pictorial atlas of houses of worship throughout the world. Each photograph is captioned with a bit of history and artistic comments about the church. Photographs are very artistic. The photo of the Pantheon really illustrates the spectacular effect of the oculus. I also loved the interplay of blue tones in the photo of Agios Nikolaos Church in Cypress. The perspective used in the photo of Cologne Cathedral is phenomenal.

While the chapters about Europe and North America were interesting, I found the other chapters even more so because I wasn't as familiar with the architecture of these churches. Many of them outshine anything in the first two chapters! Even a church in Antarctica! And, a "High-Heel Wedding Church in Taiwan? Who knew?

At times, the choice of photos is a bit puzzling. For instance, a full page photo of Church of St. Roch in Lisbon is provided, and the caption comments on the contrast between the "understated facade" and the "spectacular interior". But then, no photo is included of the interior for one to compare. I also can't believe the author didn't include Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple.

It would be really interesting to see a book that includes the other houses of worship (i.e., non-Christian) around the world.

I have done a lot of travelling around and therefore have probably visited a lot more churches than the average person so I do appreciate this book despite not being religious myself.
The book highlights over 150 churches of all different shapes and sizes from all over the world. So many different architectural features that makes me excited to travel again in the future.
At times though I felt like better pictures of certain churches could have been chosen or that their were more interesting churches in certain countries. Also St. Peters Basillica was listed as being in Rome not the Vatican City.
Overall it would make a nice coffee table book for anyone who appreciates the beauty of churches.
Thanks to Netgalley.com and Amber Books Ltd for my ARC digital copy.

Each photograph has short explanation to go with it. This book takes you all over the world and not only shows you the buildings but the carvings and the stained glass, exteriors AND interiors. From the smallest to largest and from my home town to the most remote and inaccessible places in the world on six continents. This is a coffee table book worth having. I've not knowingly been reading anything from the publishing house called Amber Books until recently, but they're fast becoming a favourite. Now and again you just have to launch yourself into a non-fiction topic you're semi-interested in, such as train journeys the rich and famous might be able to afford, or tigers, and just absorb what their highly photographic content and wonderful production values can bring you. This book is one that you really can judge by its cover – a striking, pin-sharp image, and there's a lot more where that comes from, as we go from Chesterfield's spiral spire to Ushuaia in just a few turns of the page (albeit backwards, from the beginning to the introduction). Now, I couldn't ever condone what goes on in churches of any stripe, but I can join Robert Louis Stevenson in appreciating them, and the global scope and photographic talent here really allows that. Snappy captions give us just a couple of sentences to each image, and there's very little to find fault with. It's taken me back to Saigon, and the church I spent ages walking uphill to in Georgia that's now got a metalled road all the way to. Grr. Having said that, I think my new favourite is in Colombia of all places – now that's an unexpected entry to the wish-list, post-lockdown. A seriously global scope, even if it ends in a state of 'I knew we'd get to that one eventually', makes this a five star effort. I do think however that some of the more religious people wishing to peruse this will think the author of the comments and introductions, in talking about religion and about colonialism, comes down (even more so than I did above) against churchly goings-on. But you are buying this for the images, and less so for The Word(s).

I loved this book it has beautiful pictures with a small paragraph of information about each church in the photo. Some of the information included is a brief history, location, building materials and when it was built or the person behind the design. This is a wonderful resource on church’s around the world.

I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

When I travel, I love to explore old architecture. This book allowed me to travel to many locations to do just that. I was somewhat disappointed at the lack of churches featured from Canada. There are some amazing churches and basilicas in the province of Quebec. It could almost be a book on its own. Beautiful book with amazing photographs.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Amber Books Ltd for an advance reader copy of this book for an honest review,

First of all, let me just say I am not a religious person at all, but I do love historical churches, mosques, temples etc. I find the architecture and history behind these structures to be fascinating.

This book is full of gorgeous photos of some old, some new churches from around the world. I was somewhat disappointed that perhaps some of my favourite churches didn’t make it into the book, but that is personal preferences and I can’t hold that against the author 😀 I actually discovered a few churches in North America that I would love to see in person one day .

Overall this is a great photo book !

I’m not a churchgoing person but I do appreciate architecture that excites and delights the eye, and some of these structures turn out to be places of worship. This book features more than 150 Christian chapels, basilicas, abbeys and cathedrals, a good number if which are absolutely stunning. The buildings are modern and old, large and small and situated in the centre of bustling cities and in remote places - there’s even a floating church in Cambodia. Some of the exteriors are famously eye-catching, such as St Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, but many of the the interiors make statements of comparable impact.

I’ve visited my share of religious buildings over the years, sometimes the experience has been memorable and at other times significantly less so. One unscheduled viewing occurred when I stopped for lunch at a pub in a small village on the edge of Exmoor, in my home county of Devon, and the landlord suggested I cast my eye over the church next door - it dates back to the twelfth century, he said. And what an amazing place it was, it had been knocked around over the years but the front of the church was original and much of the rest was five or six hundred years old. It also had box pews, something I hadn’t seen before. It’s not in this book, but in case you’re interested it was the church of St Mary in Molland.

This book, with its amazing photographs and brief but interesting overview and history showed just how varied places of worship can be. Obviously you have enormous buildings such as St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome but at the other end of the scale the church featured in a Kenyan township is literally a tin hut. The weirdest is high heeled shoe, fifty six feet high, made almost entirely of glass in Taiwan and the one I was most awed by is an unbelievable space carved into a mountain in Cairo.

At this point, nearing the end of the first quarter of 2020, it doesn’t look like I’ll be visiting any of the featured sites in the near future. But let’s hope things look and feel a little different at some not too distant point, there are a few here I’d definitely like to get to.
