An eye-catching primer featuring myths and folktales from around the world. Each figure is described in relation to their respective cultural origins; some are also followed by a brief story. Beautiful and informative, the reader will be inspired to do further research.
A fantastic introduction to legendary creatures from all around the world. With some familiar, and many new, this was a great collection of traditional stories of a mix of friendly, mischievous and terrifying creatures.
Gosh! This book is utterly stunning in so many ways. Thank you to the publishers for letting me have a chance to read it. Loved everything about it, from the illustrations to the history and mythology and of course the writing. While I consider myself someone who seeks our stories from different cultures and particularly those with an element of "otherness", and as an avid reader of fantasy literature, there was still enough new content here to keep me engaged. Added to the fact that it was presented and written in easy digestible manner, the illustrations helped elevate the content and the book was a quick read, I reread it again straight after! I've even ordered physical copies as gifts for various nieces, nephews and godchildren as I imagine the book will delight them too. Highly recommended.
Oh. Lordy.
So freaking gorgeous! I'm reviewing this quite late, but now I'm definitely going to get a physical copy to add to my collection. 10/10 would include it in a classroom library as well.
I love that a good selection of cultures are included in this book. Books like these are what would make children fall in love with reading from a young age!
Mythopedia: An Encyclopedia of Mythical Beasts and Their Magical Tales by Good Wives and Warriors is a wonderful and beautifully illustrated collection of magical creatures and fantastical stories from around the world.
This quick and well-written book is very much an introduction to world mythology. There’s just enough to keep you interested and encourage you to read more on your own. The book is neatly divided by continent: The Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Each continent is represented with a list of creatures and stories. Each creature has a brief but well-written and informative write-up detailing their features, personality, and origin. Many of the mythical beasts also have an associated short story. The writing is clear, simple, and easy-to-follow.
The book features a great blend of popular creatures with lesser-known figures. The Americas section has familiar creatures like the Raven, the shape-shifting god of change who brought light to the world. There is also the Thunderbird whose flapping wings create thunder. This section also features lesser known creatures from the Amazon rainforest: the terrifying one-eyed Mapinguari as well as the creepy Auñ Pana, monster fish with two human arms. Europe’s creatures include Pegasus, the popular Greek winged horse as well as Cerberus, the three-headed guardian dog of the underworld. You can also learn about the fierce Eastern European dragon Zilant who is part snake and part bird. There is also Norse mythology’s Ratatoskr, the troublemaking squirrel of the world tree.
Africa is well-represented with beloved trickster spider god Anansi who brought stories to the world. There is also ancient Egypt’s beloved cat goddess Bastet. I loved learning about South Africa’s terrifying half-elephant half-snake Grootslang monster, and Olitiau the gigantic and scary bat-like creature who lives in Central Africa’s rainforests. Asia’s beasts include the infamous Himalayan Yeti as well as Korea’s Kumiho, a deadly nine-tailed fox who devours livers! I loved being introduced to Japan’s mischievous and magical racoon dog Tanuki as well as China’s gentle and powerful unicorn-like Qilin.
I wanted to see much more creatures and stories from Oceania. But, I still enjoyed reading about creatures like Tiddalik, the thirsty frog of Australia’s Aboriginal peoples.
I love the book’s breath-taking design! I cannot wait to get my hands on a physical copy because it will be even more beautiful in print! Every page is wonderfully bright and eye-catching. The illustrations of the creatures are excellently done, vibrant, and beautifully detailed.
I love this beautifully illustrated and informative book! I would love to see more mythology books from these authors. This book is perfect for middle-grade readers or anyone who is interested in fantasy and world mythology.
🐲 🐲 🐲 🐲 🐲 out of 5 dragons!
This book is magnificent! Such beautiful illustrations and amazing stories to go with some of the creatures. It's not a huge book and the stories are short stories, but it's such a great book for learning about major mythical creatures from different countries.
For what this book set out to do - perfect! The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, and I actually feel like I learnt a lot, even though I'm definitely not the target audience. Genuinely considering purchasing a copy of this for my niece and nephew for Christmas!
This was good. I loved the illustrations, they were so beautiful and vibrant, the details were masterfully captured. I had a fun time reading it.
This was a super informative book for anyone who is interested in myths and mythical creatures, maybe you will find out some facts about mythical creatures you never knew before.
We found this book so much fun! We loved using it as a way to find out about mythical things, but we also used it to fuel our imagination, in stories, play and drawing. Ada loved seeing all the exciting mythical creatures and likes to pretend she was them. We loved every page of this and highly recommend!
Received with many thanks from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
The illustrations within this book are beyond beautiful. The facts and stories drew me in. I saw others reading this book and enjoying it. I can see why, this book was food for the eyes. I would definitely read more by the authors. This book was very informative and I learnt about mythical creatures that I had never heard off and got more information on those creatures that I did know about. Would highly recommend this to people of all ages.
A gorgeous illustrated archive on mythological beings from all across the world. Separated by continents, it delves into legends told since ancient times; some well known to most of us, but most from cultures that aren't as common knowledge as, say, Greek mythology for instance. The perfect book to own if folklore is something you're interested in.
I absolutely loved this book – I love anything like this and was so pleased that I was able to get my hands on a copy – it will be one that I have on my shelf for years to come – the illustrations are stunning!!
I really liked the layout, the little sections were fabulous and the selected stories were great too. I knew a few of them as I have a passion for Egyptian, Norse and Greek Mythology but there were a couple of surprises too which I really enjoyed.
Honestly this book was excellent – I loved every page – it is 5 stars from me – very highly recommended!!
The title got me, the cover got me and the stories and illustrations had me hooked. This book is brilliant. Perfect for story lovers, but if you've always loved myths and legends like me you really need this book. Each story is beautifully retold and the images are so rich and wonderful that you languish over each spread. Although a children's book, this would be a great present for adults too. I was given an electronic review copy of this book, however, I loved it so much I bought a physical copy - it's exquisite!
I just reviewed Mythopedia by Good Wives and Warriors. Thanks Netgalley and publisher for the electronic review copy. #Mythopedia #NetGalley
I loved this! The illustrations were gorgeous. I've always been a fan of mythology and I loved that this didn't just focus on the typical mythological beings that you tend to think of. If you're looking for a quick beautiful and pretty cool read, definitely pick this up.
This is a beautifully presented book covering a range of myths from across the world. I really liked how it is set up geographically, covering different continents. It shows you a mythical creature and then gives you the story that goes alongside.
The illustrations are beautiful throughout. I will certainly be purchasing this book to use in school. A lovely book.
Mythopedia is a collection of myths and creatures from all around the world . Organized in continents Mythopedia is a fun way to learn about beliefs and stories of other countries. Amazing illustrations decorate the stories giving the reader a more small glimpse of those cultures.
If you like myths and learning i would highly recommend this books.
A great album!
I loved the variety of myths presented in this book: many of them are little known to the general public and I even made a few discoveries. Whether in terms of characters or of cultures represented, the choice's wide and the small descriptions/presentations are quite comprehensive. Regularly, in addition to these inserts, we find the story of the legend in question, which makes you even more interested in documenting the region from which the myth originated.
Graphically, it's a crush: pages overloaded with small details and bright colors, the whole serves the story well and makes you want to spend a long time on the pages, to find all the elements of the story hidden in the drawings.
In short, it's a crush, which I regret not having in physics and which I hope will one day be translated into French (my native language)! ^^
*Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with a complimentary eARC for review purposes*
This is a wonderful starting point to find out more about the mythology that isn't usually in the spotlight. Having them divided by region is also really nice as you can see how similar the different regions are.
The illustrations in this book are beautifully detailed and coloured and at times a little creepy.
This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen.
I heard, before I ever requested it, that the illustrations were insane, and quite frankly, that's the reason I wanted to read it. My nephew and I have talked a little bit about mythology, mostly just the basic Greek guys. And I want him to learn all the interesting mythological creatures, and figured, "Oh, well, this will be perfect, because pretty pictures."
He and I spent an EXTREMELY long time looking at each image in this book, and finding all the different features. Sadly, I was far too incompetent to pronounce most of them, but since I plan to get a physical copy of this, we have plenty of time to learn.
Besides the illustrations, I adore that the creatures are divided by region. You can learn about mythological beings from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa. There's no small amount of things to learn and did I mention gorgeous creatures to see?
Love this. So hard.
The colors and illustrations were spectacular! This is such a cool collection of different mythological creatures. I like how they broke it down into different regions of the world. The inclusion of the little short tales that accompanied some of the creature introductions was great. This would be a good book for children interested in learning the different mythologies. You could easily work this into a bedtime routine and read a few of these a night. I was familiar with some of the creatures; Anansi, Pegasus, Fenrir, Anubis, Bastet, Kraken. . . .to name a few, but there were many others that I had never heard of. This is a beautiful and interesting collection of mythical beasts. The hardcover version would be a nice addition for the bookshelf!
