Wow. Where do I begin? Lisa Jewell has done it again! This is a story of complex, psychologically flawed characters that hold deception, hurt, secrets, revenge and trauma. It is a creepy, uncomfortable, dark and intense thriller set in London - and if you’re into thrillers and mystery, you’re going to love it!
The story examines Saffyre Maddox, who, at 10 years old underwent severe trauma that has haunted her for many years and led her to self harm. She ends up seeing a therapist, Roan Fours, who sees her for a few years but eventually believes she is ‘fixed’ and no longer needs him, so he dismisses her.
In the neighborhood there is also a predator roaming the streets of Hampstead who has been attacking women and ultimately making the whole neighborhood uncomfortable.
On Valentines Day, 17-year-old Saffyre goes missing and the suspension lands on Owen Pick, a quiet and awkward 33-years-old geography teacher who ends up being at the wrong place at the wrong time. He’s a little bit of a weirdo and an oddball, and lives in a house with his aunt opposite Roan Fours (Saffyre’s therapist), his wife Cate, and their two kids Georgia and Joshua....
I won’t get into it too much more but this book has a great pace and I read it in less than a day! I really enjoyed that it opens your eyes up to how delusional society can be and that maybe, just maybe, the real monsters are batently walking among us in broad daylight and those who are innocent are being questioned and punished because they lead a different life than we do that may not be ‘normal’ to us...
Thank you to Random House UK for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
What can I say , Lisa Jewell never fails. I think this type of story is Lisa at her best and she is one of my go to authors , I wasn’t as keen on her last book but this book is everything I wanted , great story , great characters, easy read and kept me guessing for a while and I liked that it wasn’t another happy ever after ! Real life!
There have been a number of assaults in the area. Then Saffyre Maddox, a young teen with a secret from the past goes missing one night and no one seems to know what happened to her.
I have read Lisa Jewell books before and this one definitely didn’t disappoint. As you read on the book reveals more and more about the characters and their stories. It is full of suspense and plot twists and turns that it had me guessing till the end. It was unputdownable.
The moral of this tale, never judge a book by it's cover and are you prepared for the consequences????
After the first page I was hooked and stayed up all night I HAD TO KNOW THE TRUTH!!!! Twisty in places and just when you think you have it all worked out BANG misdirection. Another great read from this author. Definitely a go to bed early and read this book. A very happy reader.
Thanks to Random House UK and Netgalley for the ARC.
Thanks to Random House UK and NetGalley for the chance to review this.
I'm a fan of Lisa Jewell's novels, the premise is always interesting with good pay off.
This is spooky in the best way and made for an excellent read - would recommend!
Thanks to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Another good book from Lisa Jewell. When a young girl goes missing in London everyone jumps to the wrong conclusion about what happened to her. The book tells how people can live closer by without us knowing everyone’s story.
This is one of those 'read it in one sitting' kind of books. From start to finish, you really aren't sure where it's taking you, though the guessing is endless. Written through the voices of multiple participants, as events unfold the pave quickens until you draw to a very satisfying close...and then...
Jewell is excellent at posing questions, at giving her readers more to think about than the obvious 'who dunnit?' As well as the from the 'was it him? or him? or her?' questions, we are asked to question ourselves, the power we have given to gossip and the media and the damage this all does. Every single character in this novel has their flaws, but don't we all? These flaws can be damaging to ourselves or to those around us, but only when taken to extremes can that damage be, in itself, extreme. At what point does the sad and lonely man seeking love become a danger to women? At what point does the traumatised child become a danger to him- or herself? When does the suspicious wife threaten her own sanity or the complacent husband their marriage?
Another great book from Lisa Jewell.
This novel is a page turner of a read and having read an advanced reading copy I’m pushing you to put this on your must- read list, upon its release date, 6th August 2020.
This is a story that shows how we can look at someone and make assumptions that cause a string of events that can change a life and not necessarily for the better.
This is a great piece of writing that goes from one perspective to the other seamlessly depicting events in a timely order of past and present. It is paced perfectly with just enough tension to keep you turning that page. It’s a little twisty in places and just when you think you know what is happening a little curve ball is thrown in.
Great read that has you on the edge of your seat right from the very first page.
A girl has gone missing following sexual attacks on women in a leafy suburb of London.
The police will go to any lengths to arrest a suspect even though it might not be the right one but one that appears to the outside world that it fits the bill.
Deception, lies and long held secrets Keep you guessing who is the real culprit right to the very last page
I never repeat the blurb. Loved this latest book by this sensitive and insightful writer. Great plot, simple yet believable. That's all that we can ask.
I've read Lisa Jewell's books since her first chick lit book and look forward to reading her latest book as soon as I physically can.
I knew from the start that this book was going to be good. The story line, the chracters everything! It's absolutely fantastic I couldn't put it down, well done Lisa for another fantastic book.
Not the best Lisa Jewell but a good read all the same. I have read other books which I prefered.
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC
An excellent book from Lisa Jewell. I have read other books by the same author and I have never been disappointed.
The story is, for me, a little slow to start but when it does it is a superb read.
A complex interwoven story with 3 main characters covered in alternating chapters and several subordinate characters who are all integrated into the story. Trying not to give too much away, the male 'lead' character manages to invoke both sympathy and dislike which in itself is extremely difficult to achieve.
There are a number of events in the book but the key one is exactly what happened on Valentine's Day night in Hampstead. Given one of the main characters has disappeared you spend much of the book wondering if it is a murder or a hiding away.
The ending is very good and there is a final revelation/question in the last page and a half to make you think.
I have to admit but I was hoping for a very later killer twist but with hindsight this was probably impractical in the storyline.
A book not to be missed
I love this author, I have read all her books and this one did not disappoint. Absolutely brilliant story line that kept me hooked from the first page. Five stars from me. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to netgalley and Lisa Jewell for the advanced copy of this book. I agreed to give my unbiased opinion voluntarily.
This story, which essentially revolves around a troubled teen builds beautifully. It draws you in as the story unfolds. A real page turner.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
I discovered Lisa Jewell earlier this year, and devoured 'The Family Upstairs' and 'The House We Grew Up In'. This latest novel did not disappoint. It's got the usual domestic setting, and beautifully-drawn characters, and some great twists and turns that leave you guessing until the last page.
I really like Lisa Jewell's depiction of her characters, and she creates strong female leads in her novels. In this novel, 17-year old Saffyre has problems ("When I was ten years old something really, really bad happened to me. Let's maybe not get into that too deep.") and Cate, in her 40s, also has problems ("He is her husband. He hates her. She knows he does. And it's her fault.") . The men in their lives, a local college teacher, Cate's husband and son, and Saffyre's uncle, provide an often-hapless, sympathetically-painted supporting cast.
This novel deals with the theme of invisibility in its metaphoric sense: the desire to be invisible, the need to be invisible, and the unwanted burden of being invisible. All of the characters are affected by this in some way, and I'm not sure that Saffyre, 'The Invisible Girl', is really the most invisible character in the novel.
This is a great read if you're looking for a thriller with a domestic setting. It's a definite page-turner with good characterisation.
Lisa Jewell has been raved about as an excellent thriller writer so when I saw this book up for review on Netgalley, I had to see what the fuss was about it.
Cate, a stay at home mum, is married to Roan, a child psychologist and they have two children; Georgia and Josh.
At the start of the book, Georgia feels like she is being followed home, so she calls her mum who stays on the phone to her till she's safely inside.
Then a girl goes missing.
Cate knows something is wrong. She knows someone is hiding something from her but she can't put her finger on it.
Told through multiple POV, Jewell does a great job at sharing pieces of the puzzle in a way that keeps you reading 'just one more chapter.'
I had no idea how the story was going to unfold and everytime I thought I had sussed it out, Jewell through a spanner right into the middle of my ideas to show me that I didn't really have any clue at all. In fact, the twists kept coming until the very last page.
Lisa Jewell has written another gripping page turner with Invisible girl.
It's tells the story of missing girl Saffyre from several POVs and shows how others make assumptions of people based on how they look and act. Sometimes these are correct and other times very wrong.
Saffyre is a very troubled teen and the story around her disappearance builds beautifully.
This book was full of angst and drama. I'd highly recommend it.
Another triumph from Lisa Jewell. The story of the Invisible Girl keeps you guessing as the characters develop and reveal themselves, bit by bit. It’s an engrossing book that I read within a few days, despite an 8 hour working day.
It tells of Saffyre, a lonely and reclusive girl who has been affected by an incident that happened some years ago. The story investigates how that has affected her life and the counselling she received.
All the characters are cleverly linked to form the weaving tale of what happened on Valentines night and the far reaching consequences.
As with all her books, Lisa creates interesting people, flawed but not fundamentally evil.
I look forward to her books being published as I know I am in for a great read, an enthralling story and a twist or two. I have not been disappointed. I would highly recommend this book as it’s clever, satisfying and altogether fabulous.
I've been a fan of Lisa Jewell for years so was thrilled to get a copy of Invisible Girl. It's a really well paced intriguing thriller with interesting characters and a plot which keeps you guessing. One of her best!
