This was my least favourite Sophia Money-Coutts book. It just didn’t enthral me as much as the others and I found the main characters constant self-flagellation annoying and repetitive. I’m sure it was meant to be endearing and to have you rooting for her to overcome her OCD but I just couldn’t connect with her and I think that’s what spoiled it for me because I liked all of the other characters. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and HQ for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book. It's set in a bookshop which is my idea of heaven so that worked! It's also a lovely romantic comedy which is well written. Florence is single and her step mother believes something should be done about it, especially as she lives with her step sisters who are both gorgeous. Her father is a diplomat in Argentina so is not often on the scene and it is obvious she misses him; her mum having died when she was young.
She is introduced by her step mother Patricia to a love coach and a session is booked for her to attend! What could go wrong? She is prompted to come up with a list of what characteristics her ideal man would have and the idea is that he will then appear, delivered by the universe!
I found the characters all intertwined nicely and I wanted to keep reading the story. I would definitely recommend!
I received a copy of The Wish List by Sophia Money-Coutts via NetGalley in exchange for an impartial review. Wow, am I glad I did! I had a hard time putting this one down and finished it within 24 hrs!
The main protagonist, Florence Fairfax, is in her thirties and lives with her two half sisters who are nothing like her. Florence is a university graduate who works in a privately owned book store by choice, but has wavering aspirations of also becoming a published children's author one day. Florence likes order and routine and often predicts the turn out of the immediate future based on counting various things. One thing she doesn't need to count is boyfriends because she doesn't have one. She is very content with sharing her bedroom with no one other than her 17 year old ginger cat, who she has named Marmalade.
By contrast, one sister is about to marry for money, prestige, and maybe love. The other is a model who has no shortage of male attention. Step-mum, Patricia, is desperate to prompt some action in to Florence's love life - so much so that she hassles Florence until she agrees to go see a woman who specialises in sorting out love lives.
Before long Florence finds herself seated inside a boldly decorated room where an even more boldly dressed woman instructs her to make a list. Florence, despite her disbelief, soon finds her life changing in ways she never anticipated. But is this what Florence actually wants?
With a humour style that will appeal to fans of Briget Jone's Diary, I urge fans of women's fiction, comedy romances, contemporary romances and 'chick lit' to add this one to their TBRs. I am sure you won't be disappointed!
Meet Florence, a thirty-two year old woman who lives with her half-sisters in Kennington London. She works in a bookstore in Chelsea and likes things in order. A compulsive counting habit, she plays consequences to decide whether she is going to have a good day or a bad one. Odd numbers are not good, whereas even numbers reflect a positive outcome.
She's never had a boyfriend, although she's had some one night stands and someone she scared off in uni. Love is not something that is necessarily missing from her life, but her family feel that it is. With her step mother sending her to see a love coach, who makes her write a wish list of qualities that she'd like in a boyfriend.
Is it the universe aligning or just coincidence that Rory appears in her bookstore ticking the items off her wishlist. Soon she is melting at his touch and almost everyone loves him, but she doesn't quite feel part of his political lifestyle and social circle. Is he really the man of her dreams? Are they really the qualities that she is looking for in a man?
The Wish List tells the story of Florence Fairfax a thirty something years old woman who works in a bookshop in London, she’s inexperienced in love and a bit whimsical but all we want is for her to be happy. She has some very funny/ sometimes innapropriate thoughts however, she also gets anxious and suffers from a form of OCD, I found her an all around relatable character. To get over her inexperience in love she goes to a ‘love therapy’ session which leads her to make her ‘wish list’, she ends up meeting a guy called Rory who seems to fit everything she’s wanted but is this too good to be true?
If you want a lighthearted read with some very funny characters, this is the book for you! There is a ton of funny dialogues and some very cringey/ explicit love scenes. [When I mean cringey, I mean like laughed out loud cringey] When I read it, Florence reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones and I loved that.
I thought it was great read and It’s out in August and it would definitely be the perfect summer read for sure!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! All the characters are relatable, the storyline will keep you turning the pages until before you know it you've not been able to put it down and finished the book! I laughed and cried throughout this and I cant wait to read Sophia's next book!
That you to netgalley and HQ for keeping me entertained during lockdown.
Meet Flo 32 never had a boyfriend and works at Frisbee bookshop. Her step sister Mia is getting prepared for her wedding to Hugo.
Flo's step mother send her to therapist where she compiles her wish list of her perfect man.
Flo then has 2 men in her life, who will she choose.
A quick easy read that is a real feel good book. I enjoyed it
From reading the synopsis it was easy to guess the basis of this book however that meant that it was exactly what I was looking for. It was funny, engaging and had a good dose of escapism.
The story revolves around Florence, slightly OCD and trapped in a routine, it follows her journey through therapy and the resulting epiphany. Lovely, warm and uplifting. Highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley for gifting me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Wish List is the story of Florence Fairfax. She works in a bookshop and is looking for the one. Always unlucky in love whilst her sisters were loved up and getting married. Until she meets Rory.........but does he meet all of the requirements on Florence’s Wish List?
I loved this book. I have never read a book by this author before but I have already looked up some of her other books to add to my reading list.
The story had me hooked from the beginning and it gave me every emotion from anger to crying (when you read the book, and I recommend you do, you will know which bit made me cry!)
I will definitely be reading more books by Sophie Money-Coutts and I will never be able to hear the work “Cowabunga” again without chucking to myself!
Very enjoyable story which is easy to relate to in parts and offers the reader a whole range of emotions
Really enjoyed this book. Funny, relatable characters who you really care about and a funny, entertaining and poignant storyline, covering lots of thought - provoking subjects. This book made me laugh and cry and I loved Marmalade the cat. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
Having read the authors two previous books (The Plus One and What Happens Now?) and enjoying them both I had a feeling I would like this one too. I wasn’t disappointed this book has been my favourite.
It tells the story of Florence Fairfax, thirty something and single living in her childhood home with her cat Marmalade and her two half sisters Mia and Ruby. She has a job in a little independent bookshop in Chelsea which she loves (who wouldn’t!) and she’s happy. Her stepmum, Patricia, thinks she needs a helping hand with her love life and pays for her to go and see Gwendolyn, a love coach, who asks her to write a wish list of her perfect man. Not long later Rory Dundee enters her life, is he her perfect man?
All the characters are well written and each brought something to the story. It’s a quick and easy read filled with romance, humour and a tinge of sadness in places (one in particular which I’m not ashamed to admit brought a tear to my eye).
Overall another great read from the author and the perfect escape from reality for a little while.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ for the ARC.
An unlucky-in-love thirty something goes to see a fortune teller who suggests she write out a wish list of what she wants in a boyfriend. After doing this, a man matching the exact description turns up. This is a really pleasant read and its quite predictable but so enjoyable. I raced through it and it was ideal escapism- would definitely recommend!
Sophia Money-Coutts is fast becoming one of my favourite rom-com writers. I’ve already read her first two novels, so I was pretty sure I’d enjoy her new one, The Wish List, too. (Spoiler: of course I did!) Florence Fairfax is our heroine. She works in a bookstore in Chelsea, spends her evenings with her cat Marmalade, and is perfectly happy being single – but her family have other ideas, and set her up with a love guru who encourages her to write a “wish list” of character traits she’d like in her dream man. The Wish List made me laugh out loud, and even though I saw (part of) the ending coming, I still thoroughly enjoyed it, and really rooted for Florence. If you like rom-coms, you’ll love The Wish List!
I loved the dry wit in this book. Amusing moments kept creeping up and I had to stop and give myself time to laugh at some of the almost hidden funny descriptions
It's all about Florence, who actually wishes it wasnt about her. She is content with her life and her lovely cat Marmalade. She has a good relationship with her two zany stepsisters and with her dotty step mother. They are determined to change her life, and send her off to an extremely weird 'love coach'. Slightly unbelievable really..
It's a most enjoyable book.
Thanks to NetGalley for a review copy.
If you want some funny feel-good escapism - this is the book for you.
I loved the concept of the wish list (haven't we all written one about who we think our ideal man is?) and the idea of challenging what we think we want. The characters were beautifully written, and although the story-line was somewhat predictable I still wanted to turn the page due to the sexy scenes, witty dialogue and some cringe worthy situations that made me laugh out loud.
This was a touching story of love, friendship, family and accepting your quirks, and I did have a good weep at some parts (no spoilers) and I was left with a warm fuzzy glow after reading.
I look forward to reading more of Sophia's books!
Thank you netgalley for letting me read this!
Oh my goodness, I LOVED this book.
I had never read one by this author before, but after hearing a friend rave about her I decided to give it a go. It's the first book in ages where I actually laughed out loud, and I was glued to it for an entire weekend.
I was immediately sucked in to the world of Florence, and I loved how she negotiated her quirky life in the bookshop and her dating life. I especially loved her relationship with her sisters. When the book started, I thought they were going to be painted as the 'ugly stepsisters' who left her out, but I was pleasantly surprised that they were supportive and lovely throughout.
A really excellent, feel-good and extremely relatable read. Would give more stars if I could!
I’ve been reading so many books since the UK went into lockdown, and I normally read crime/thriller books and psychological thrillers however I needed something to make me smile.
Firstly, I have to say, I love Florence! She is quirky, amusing and sweet and the relationship with her cat Marmalade is adorable. I also loved the relationship between her step sisters, Ruby the ‘model‘ and Mia who was getting married, as well as her Stepmother, Patricia. The less said about Rory the better!!
The story was predictable but who cares still, I loved it. Although I didn’t laugh out loud, this book did make me chuckle. Sometimes you need a feel good book which doesn’t have all the twists and turns and I’m happy to say The Wish List is just that.
There is nothing else to say other than I loved this book!
Thank you so much to HQ and Netgalley for an advance copy of this book in return for my honest review, I feel very lucky.
I LOVED this book! From the moment I read the synopsis I wanted to read it and it was prefect, just what I needed as my next book!
‘The Wish List’ tells the story of Florence Fairfax and how she’s reached the age of 32 without any real love interest or boyfriend, just her and her loyal companion, her cat Marmalade. Florence isn’t bothered by this, she loves her normal routine life and her job in a bookshop. Following a forced visit to a love guru she has to make a list of what she wants from the ‘perfect’ man and lo and behold, a chance meeting brings him into her life. However has she been looking for love in all the right places?
I loved Florence, I loved Marmalade, I loved everything! The writing style had me captured from the minute I began and I would have devoured this book in a day (if work hadn’t got in the way!!) It made me laugh, it made me cry and, although I predicted what was going to happen, I didn’t care and thoroughly enjoyed the journey of getting there. I will however never hear the words ‘Cowabunga’ in the same way again!!!
LOVED it, no other words needed! Off to find other books by Sophia now!

This was exactly what I was hoping for, witty, funny and with an engaging cast of characters, I really enjoyed escaping into this one.
Florence is an introvert and an obsessive compulsive 'counter', trapped in a routine and living with her two step sisters and family who she feels kind of separate from. She's never had a boyfriend and so after visiting a very odd therapist type woman/witch character she writes a very specific list of requirements for her ideal man.
The therapist's involvement was the only thing that didn't really work for me; that part of the story was bordering on the paranormal, my eyes were rolling. I would have preferred Florence to have her epiphany without the mad therapist getting involved. But that's just me.
Apart from that this was warm, sweet and uplifting, just the thing to escape into.
Complete story, recommended.
