For children fascinated with #mountains, this book is a great resource. The title introduces some of the largest mountain chains on Earth (Himalayas, Andes, Alps..) at the same time introduces the peaks and familiar landmarks. Flora and fauna are also introduced in the context. The aesthetic beauty, geological phenomenon, and the mountain landmarks have all been introduced in a wonderful manner. Text is simple and informative, and pictures are artistic and realistic. This is a good book for kids who love #nature, #volcano, mountain climbing, #animals, #travel.
I love this straightforward, informative and easy to follow book on mountains of the world. We learn the two main types - upthrust or fold mountains and volcanic mountains. Then we're given plenty of examples of each and we visit their higher and lower slopes, seeing what if anything lives in these areas. Not much lives on the top of Mt Everest, so here we learn about glaciers and crevasses. Elsewhere we learn about mountain lions and small birds, lizards and butterflies.
At the end is a map of the world showing the locations we've visited.
The author Charlotte Guillain tells us she grew up in a place with no mountains - her surname sounds Dutch, and the Netherlands is a delta. The illustrations by Chris Madden are relatively simple graphics but full of colour and movement (and kids will be daring one another to touch the jumping spider). This wonderful exploration of mountains and their habitats won't be enough for many young readers, who will want to add to the list with Vesuvius, the Southern Alps, Appalachians and many more. Which, of course, is exactly what we'd want.
I would recommend the book for readers eight to twelve years old, or younger if an adult is reading with them and helping them pronounce new words. I certainly learnt something from the read, so in a sense there is no upper age limit. Enjoy!
I downloaded an e-ARC from Net Galley. This is an unbiased review.
This book is beautiful as well as informative. I think it is incredibly well done and will reach a range of ages, but mostly elementary age. I think the illustrations give life to a topic that may not always be interesting to every child. This book would be a great addition to classrooms and homes and is a great science resource.
A great addition to any elementary school library, Mountains is an informative text with beautiful illustrations. Perfect for the non-fiction enthusiast or as a supportive text for a unit on mountains (or biomes). Overall, captivating, visually pleasing, and a great information text. Ages 5-10
A wonderful book on Mountains. What makes them special. There uniqueness in their setting. Also the wildlife and creatures that can be found in those habitats.
A very informative book with lovely pictures to go along side. My only criticism would be that I would have liked to see some photographs to give even more detail alongside the illustrations.
