The Second Chance Hotel is a truly heartwarming novel that will give you all the feels. Shady Pines is the perfect setting to lose yourself in for a few hours as a reader, especially at this time of uncertainty. I loved that main character April followed in her mum's footsteps and chose Shady Pines as her place to start again after her marriage ended.
I really bought into April's story and admired her strength to move on and I found myself genuinely rooting for her happiness. All the characters, (especially Cillian and Orla) were wonderful and I was pulled into Martha's story which added a really sweet, traditionally romantic dimension to the story.
There was plenty of Dove wit, laughs as well as some poignant moments too which made the perfect balance. It's the perfect feel-good book to curl up with this summer.
April leaves home after her life falls apart post divorce and buys a holiday home park with her savings which she once visited when he mum ran away from her marriage 30 years prior.
It's a good story line and has a nice romantic twist but April was hard to like and both her and Cillians strops made the characters annoying. To be fair, both characters were leaving hard relationships but their arguing with each other was annoying to read and there was a distinct lack of passion in the story.
That said, its still a good read if your looking for a romance novel.
The other smaller characters are all likeable and quirky.
Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A lovely book to read to escape from the world. Rachel Dove is a fine author who portrays real life characters. Enjoyable and easy to read and a good way to spend a few hours on a lazy Sunday.
After April's marriage has ended in heartbreak she buys a holiday park to escape from her life. She doesn't realize what she's gotten herself into or how much work lies ahead to make a success of the holiday park. Along the way she encounters a lot of very interesting characters. This book was okay, but not amazing. I had a very hard time connecting to the main character. But I did enjoy the side characters a lot more. The book did have some heartwarming, uplifting moments that I enjoyed. But overall, I didn't love it.
This is a lovely story set in Cornwall. April is devastated after a Divorce. Her husband has married a younger woman and April needs to find herself again. She buys a holiday camp in Cornwall, a place where she remembers being happy with her mum.
The book is about finding yourself again. It’s about lost loves and new loves and learning to trust after a hurt.
I enjoyed reading this book but I would like to have read more about the camp itself and maybe the holiday makers. I think there could be a whole series of books about that and I would be happy to read how April and everyone else are getting on.
I absolutely loved this book, a beautiful setting and a variety of gorgeous characters all rolled in. This has been the escape read I gave been looking for. There is absolutely nothing negative I can say about this book. This is an author who has an amazing talent for pulling me into the pages and keeping me completely hooked until I'm finished. Rachel Dove is a queen of romance and this might be my new favourite. This book is as fantastic and heartwarming as Rachel's other books, with a complete new variety of characters that we haven't met before. It's no secret that I am a huge fan of Rachel's and I always recommend her books to friends who have said that they have enjoyed books by Sophie Kinsella and Cecelia Ahern. This book hasn't been released yet (thank you HQ and Rachel for the advanced copy) and I am already extremely excited to see what the future has in store for Rachel's readers. I have no doubt that any future books will be fantastic. As with all of Rachel's books, I have been left smiling. Although, I had a moment of "oh my heart" this has been a magical read. It has allowed me to escape and taken away any anxiety I have been feeling today. I adore the cover of this book, definitely captured my attention instantly. I have been extremely excited and anticipated this gem for a while. The story has been the perfect length, although I would love a follow on to revisit the characters in this book as well as some of Rachel's other characters. The plot of this book is completely unique and realistic. Rachel has sensitively covered the subject of a character being unable to have children due to PCOs. This is something which I don't think any other author has done and it has been done in a realistic and honest way. This is without a doubt a five star read which deserves to be successful. I absolutely recommend this book. It is a magical heartwarming read which has been my perfect escape.
Set in my favourite part of the world, Cornwall, the story is set in a small holiday camp that has just been bought by April following the breakup of her marriage. The camp is very run down after years of neglect so she takes on the services of handyman Cillian to help the refurbishment.
With a variety of characters from grumpy resident artist Martha to Cillian's young daughter Orla the camp gives the residents a chance to heal after their various problems. A great read to help escape from the realities of lockdown that we have at the moment.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
I absolutely loved this heart-warming novel about second chances and having hope and a chance to heal. April's mum chose Shady Pines as her escape route many years ago and now it is April's turn to escape as her marriage ends in heartbreak. Buying the holiday park and escaping from her previous life, April has no idea what she's taking on and how she will cope with the life-damaged people she meets there. However, in turning the park around she learns that lives can be mended too.
I've always loved Lizard Point and found it a place where peace and tranquility can heal troubled minds and the description of the park made it very real in my mind. The individual stories of the characters were poignant and I loved to see the characters face their past demons and move on with their lives. I particularly liked Martha and little Orla. There were moments to make you smile and even a moment when I shed a few tears thinking of my own mum. A beautiful uplifting tale that reminded me that you should never close off your heart to possibilities. Thank you so much for this lovely book.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. Just what I needed to read in these strange times, light hearted, great characters and good story line. An escapism read.
We all have that childhood memory vacation spot. Following her divorce, April returns to the holiday park where she has such strong childhood memories. She quickly comes to wonder if this is a mistake. The residents doubt her abilities and April persists in proving them wrong. This book is full of charmful characters who will win your heart and remind you of how important second chances are.
Thank you, NetGalley for this early review!
Thank you to the publishers and Netgalley For an early copy.
April, after finding out her husband’s having an affair buys a run down hotel with chalets. The place her mom used to bring her to.
She’s not what some people were expecting and sets about proving them wrong.
Cillian who is also trying to get things under control following his wife’ leaving him and his daughter.
April asks Cillian to help get the hotel refurbished and for her to open it again.
He moves into one of the chalets with his daughter, Martha, one of the people living in the chalets doesn’t warm to her to start with but slowly she starts coming round.
Slowly April starts opening up to Cillian and Martha on why she’s here and what’s happened.
One day Martha gives April a box containing letters, of years gone by.
Martha asks her and Cillian to visit the gallery in town. But when Martha visits with them taking some of her paintings, they all get a shock, as the person they meet there is Martha’s old love George.
April and Cillian both have issues to deal with and work out. But they eventually do as does Martha and George.
Really enjoyed reading this lovely book.
Definitely recommend it.
A beautiful uplifting read, based at a holiday park in Cornwall that April bought on a whim after her marriage ended! Turning up at the unloved, run down holiday park with a grumpy resident in place, April begins to wonder if owning a holiday park that was once special to her as a child is such a good idea! However as time passes she meets cillian a single dad to orla and as the resident grumpy lady Martha softens and becomes friendly towards her it feels like life may finally be changing for the better! Ultimately this book illustrates that everyone is entitled to a second chance of love no matter how old you are or whatever baggage/ problems you might have the course of true love may not be easy but it is well worth following your heart to find a second chance of happiness! Thoroughly enjoy this book a great distraction from covid 19!
Thank you net galley for this early read.
A Romantic comedy. Love how the characters all come together. Funny and serious in parts but so light hearted. If you don't want an intense book i would definitely recommend
