Such a beautiful poetical read. I fell in love with the author's outlook on the world of nature. I'm a huge fan of the oak and have many on the land where I live (like the author i appreciate I don't own them, I'm a guardian to them while I am here). Canton weaves his own experience of sitting with a several hundred year old oak tree, the passing of the seasons and the impact the species has had on others over time. There is much to appreciate and enjoy in these beautiful pages.
A rich love letter to the author's favourite Oak tree. You'll learn much about these ancient trees and the landscape and history this particular tree has witnessed as we follow the authors journey of exploration.
I really loved this. Nature writing often covers a wide breadth but The Oak Papers is all about the author's interactions with the Honywood Oak, an ancient tree which was part of the landscape even when the Magna Carta was signed. Canton considers the tree in itself, as well as the broader human connection and reliance on trees, from our houses to our boats. This was a really lovely, gentle read, which did make me stop and think about the oldest trees in my area of the world, what they've witnessed and what they might think of me in turn.
I found the information about oak trees interesting, but I'm afraid I got a bit stuck on the personal and emotional side of things.
