This was a quick, easy and for the most-part a light hearted read about Josh, who following a rejected proposal decides to place his fate at the hands of a coin. The coin takes him down some interesting avenues, Amsterdam is my personal favourite.
This is like a mixture of a Danny Wallace and Nick Spalding book, which is a great compliment from me. The main character decides, after a humiliating proposal which results in him being single, homeless and jobless, to make all major decisions on the flip of a coin for the following year. However, falling in love with a mystery woman at the London Marathon and asking the coin what to do, means he travels around Europe trying to track her down. This is funny book, but it does lose its way in the middle on the search for the “sunflower girl” where nothing much happens. Other than that, a fun read with humour, love, loss and a flipping coin – who could ask for more?
An enjoyable, quick read. Lighthearted moments to make you smile, good characters and a storyline that keeps you wanting to read. Occasionally it felt like it dragged on too long or got a bit too silly, but this is a good solid read for fans of the genre.
This novel was great fun and like a breath of fresh air. Very funny and engaging from the start, it follows the adventures of a young man who’s just had his heart broken, lost his job and, feeling that too much of his life is characterised by bad decisions, decides to let a coin toss make decisions for him. The central character is very likeable and full of self-deprecating humour. There were also several laugh-out-loud and heart-warming moments in the novel making it a delight to read.
I really enjoyed this book. It's always a good sign when a story has me laughing out loud from the first few chapters and I had to be careful about reading in bed, so as to not wake up my husband!
Josh was a very likeable character, funny and caring, with a great cast of friends. I loved the story of Sunflower Girl and Josh's journey through a difficult and challenging year.
I did predict the ending of the story, which didn't take any of the enjoyment away, and I could picture the closing scenes on the big screen. Yes, this would definitely be a good contender for a Richard Curtis type film.
Overall a great book, perfect for a spot of escapism.
As a debut novel it came across as being very professional and confident and I look forward to James' future stories.
Romance books wouldnt be a genre I would normally go for but this sounded good when the cover caught my eye. It was lighthearted and easy to read. It didnt grip me as well as my normal genre but it was good to change it up a bit and try something different
This was such an enjoyable book to read and it’s the perfect book to throw in your suitcase for a weekend away. It’s warm and gentle, with an interesting premise and refreshingly it is from the male point of view. It’s a quick and easy to read romcom with some lovely funny moments.
After a recent disastrous romantic failure and some bad decision making in his life, Josh decides to toss a coin for every decision he makes in his life for a whole year. The story ultimately follows his meeting of ‘Sunflower Girl’ and his subsequent coin tossing journeys in trying to track her down. The descriptions of Paris and Amsterdam were wonderful and I could relate to the descriptions of the food, art galleries and the other places they visited, having been a visitor to some of these places myself.
I felt the book had a little bit of a slow start, however the pacing is generally good and the book held my interest throughout. The characters are wonderfully developed and very likeable. I loved the delightful close friendship Josh, Jessie and Jake shared and I enjoyed reading about their antics and the wonderful supportive bond they had with each other.
This is a funny, warm and romantic comedy and the perfect summer or weekend read. A great debut novel from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this eARC.
The Flip Side is the first book I’ve read by James Bailey. It follows the story of Josh. He proposes to his girlfriend on New Year’s Eve but this game don’t go according to plan. On the return to his parents house, he finds a 50 pence coin and decides to make all future decisions for the next year based on the toss of a coin. I found this book to be a quick and easy read, it had great characters, was entertaining and the plot flowed well. I would recommend this book. Thank you to NetGalley, Penguin Michael Joseph UK and the author for the chance to review.
Flip Side' is the debut novel by author James Bailey and is sure to be a success. This is far from my normal Mystery Crime novels but was such a great read. This Romantic comedy was an instant hit with me and I rapidly consumed it wanting to see how it finished. It was very light compared to my usual books but nevertheless was gripping and funny with true laugh out loud moments.
A simple plot, but many good novels are like that where twenty eight year old Josh decides to toss the coin for every decision in his life. This comes after a disastrous romantic failure and Josh decides that with his bad decisions a toss of the coin couldn't fair any worse. What follows is a year in Josh's life where his fate is determined by the toss of his 50 pence piece.
The book is full of humour with Josh and his friends Jessie and Jake who constantly tease him for his bad decisions and the fact that he lives with his parents. The fact that it is a light romantic comedy you may feel that you already know how it is going to end but there is so much more to this book with the escapades undertaken along the way by Josh.
Enjoyable characters and a great summer read that will bring a smile to your face.
I would like to thank both Net Galley and Penguin Michael Joseph for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
The Flip side is a romance that although entertaining I did find myself skimming through some pages.
After receiving a big fat NO to his marriage proposal Josh finds himself homeless and jobless ( he lived in his ex’s flat and worked at her fathers hotel) he has to return home and live with his parents. I really didn’t like his father and his mother had her moments. As all of his past decisions had ended with him being in this situation he decides he will base all future ones on the toss of a coin for the next year. So everything he does proceeds this way, despite all his friends telling him how crazy he his, it does lead to some humorous moments, his first couple of tries of dating again whilst cringeworthy are well described.
The rest of the story continues in this vein, enjoyable enough and with a satisfying finale.
My thanks to net galley and publisher for the opportunity to review this book honestly.
I don't often read romance novels written from the guys point of view but this was really good. You really felt for the poor guy as he literally lost everything and then trying to build his life up again. I was starting to wonder if it was a rom com for the first few chapters as his coin did take precedent, but then the romance aspect kicked in and it was really sweet. It's a very British novel and not unlike our romcom movies where not everything is polished and goes well, and the main character does make mistakes and says the wrong thing, not unlike every single Hugh Grant movie, but he has a good heart and you're rooting for him all the way through. I really enjoyed this and would highly recommend
Sweet romance that takes us on a chase to find sunflower girl via the flip of a coin. Cosy and gentle.
Really good read. Would recommend to friends and family. I could sympathise with characters (important for any fiction novel!) and looked forward to picking it up and reading the next few chapters! Interesting plot line and a good ending. Will look out for more novels by the author. Thank you.
This was a bit of a slow start, but as I read on I became more invested in Josh's story and his character development. It was a sweet, relatable story with lovely characters.
A humorous light-hearted book which made for an easy going enjoyable read. Perfect reading for a relaxing afternoon. Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for letting me review this book.
The Flip Side tells the story of Josh, who having been dealt some unfortunate hands, decides he’s going to make his future decisions by flipping a coin. He meets the girl of his dreams, then loses her, and with the help of the coin eventually finds his way back to her. It is an enjoyable book with likeable characters and some really funny parts. You are rooting for the characters and hoping that life works out for Josh. It is a bit of a slow starter then quick to wrap up the story but it is worth a read and a story for a true romantic!
This book was amazing!! I was waiting for a romantic and fluffy book but it's more about Josh and his disaster of a life, and that makes it even better. I hadn't laugh out loud with a book in a long time! I tried reading slow to make it last longer, and that's also a first in a long time too! Great feel good and funny book.
The Flip Side is a lovely change from the books I’ve been reading lately, in that it is told from the male’s perspective. This was really refreshing.
The story is about Josh and how he turns his life around following bad news. I like the idea of this escape and, while not entirely practical for many, think we’ve all had times where we would love to pack a case and just head off on an adventure.
I enjoyed this book. It was refreshing and engaging. The author’s writing style was easy to follow and pulled me in.
Thank you NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book 📚
This was a perfect summer read and a great way to pass the time. It's funny and has great characters that you really warm to.
What could be more romantic than proposing to your girlfriend on New Year's Eve on the London Eye? A private capsule for just the two of you with champagne and chocolates on standby. It would be romantic if your girlfriend said yes instead of no. That's the situation Josh finds himself in when his girlfriend of three tears not only says no but that she's been seeing someone else. If that wasn't bad enough it's Jade's flat that they live in and her dad's hotel that they both work at.
As the New Year rings in Josh has no girlfriend, no job and nowhere to live. After realising that maybe he hasn't made the best decisions he opts to flip a coin throughout the next year to help guide him through all of life's decisions. Not always giving him the best decision but at least he can blame it on the coin.
Follow Josh throughout the year as he attempts to rebuild his life. From what he wants to do for a job to finding love again. Told from Josh's point of view the storyline struggled a little for me. With a funny relationship with his parents, his friendships and then chasing after a girl he'd met once.
