I enjoyed the friendships in this book and seeing what life was like in the time period
This is much more of a character based book than a plot based one.
The pace was slightly too slow for me.
This was a brilliant read and is being featured on my blog for my quick star reviews feature, which I have created on my blog so I can catch up with all the books I have read and therefore review.

I’ve not read any booked by this author before and had I have seen this on a book shelf I wouldn’t’ have picked it as the cover doesn’t appeal to me. I had a free copy through NetGalley however, and what a beautiful story. I feel like this is a true story, but not sure if it is or not. Thankyou for my advance copy and will be finding more books by Posy.
Not for me. I struggled to get into it and didn’t really find the characters that interesting unfortunately
Thank you to Orion Publishing Group, Trapeze and NetGalley for the digital eARC of The Kew Gardens Girls in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed The Kew Gardens Girls by Posy Lovell [pub date 1 April, 2021 ] and feel that it is a valuable addition to a WWI historical fiction collection. I was originally drawn to the novel because of the gardens setting but learned so much about how WWI impacted multiple facets of life, and how men & women reacted to their expected roles.
The ensemble cast was really great at times and it was nice to learn about how the war impacted a community, but it also hindered the story. Especially near the end of the story it seems like some characters were just dropped because there wasn’t time to complete their storylines.
The Kew Gardens Girls would be a good read for fans of historical fiction or those who are interested in gardening and women’s rights as both play prominent roles in the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed The Kew Garden Girls.
From Suffragettes to gardening....the Kew Garden girls had a very busy life and with strong bonds of friendship they can conquer whatever they set their minds to.
The characters were gritty and strong and the story lines were engrossing.
Based on real events, The Kew Gardens Girls follows some of the (in this book, fictional) women who took over working in London's Kew Gardens when WWI broke out and the men were sent to the Front. Sprinkled with heaps of suffragette-action, as well as family-relations and the "found family"-trope, and told over the course of several years, we get to join them in the ups and downs of life during a part of the war.
I have strangely mixed feeling about this, because on the one hand I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and found the characters real and enjoyable, but on the other I just.. could not stand the writing of it. Every feeling was told, and several scenes that were supposed to be very emotional and gripping were just.. told. I never really felt it. I really, really liked the story, just not the way it was told.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a lovely book and I hope it’s the start of a series! An excellent cast of characters who were totally realistic, set against the wonderful backdrop of Kew Gardens in the First World War. From her Ladyship to the conchie to the unmarried mother, every walk of life is represented. A really nice read.
Fantastic characters and a great plot. Lovely writing style that really draws you into the characters. Hoping to read more of this in the future!
This was an interesting and enjoyable read. I was fascinated by the historical details in the book. I felt that I was there. The whole book is beautifully written. Ivy, Louisa and Win were wonderful believable characters with intriguing back stories. I just wanted to keep reading.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
I really enjoyed this book, it had such a great storyline about friendships and love based around the very different personalities of 3 women in ww1. It includes references to the suffragette movement.
Thank you to Posy Lovell. #TheKewGardensGirls
What a lovely read, it will transport you back to a time while oddly things seemed easier well at least more straight forward.
I was totally lost within the pages, a great escape from current times.
The characters were believable and the story flowed so well, I was sad when I finished it.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity of reading this in exchange for a honest review.
This is an interesting and engaging, that has a few raw Parts which mention the horrors of war, domestic violence and treatment of suffragettes.
The book focuses on a strong friendship, made Up of 3. Sry different women and the men they work with. It is an easy read and will be of interest to anyone who enjoys a romance and books set in this period, as we.l as those who want to know a little more about Mew gardens at the time.
I enjoyed the gentleness of the gardening and how Ivy creates her own version of the Diary of a Edwardian lady. The strong friendships, the can do spirit and the attempts to put right wrongs make for a entertaining and enjoyable story.
Will Jim ever return, will Bernie be safe, will Ivy keep her secrets, will Win fit in and will Louisa escape her past? You will w t to keep reading to find out because you will care about them.
This was a great book, loved the characters and storyline, something different to the usual Girl's of books.
I really enjoyed this book. I particularly enjoy historical fiction that takes place during either world war, and this was no exception. I enjoyed very much the relationships between the women and the actions that took place. Coincidentally, I was also listening to a podcast recently about the Suffragettes, and it was interesting to hear real life and fiction intermingling.
The story was lovely with just the right amount of heartbreak. The setting was lovely, although I would have loved a bit more description of London and Kew during WW1.
A solid 4/5 for me, an easy read that I would be happy to read again. Thanks Netgalley and Orion/Trapeze for the opportunity to try this author.
A great story of friendship with a cast of great women characters and a vivid historical background.
Being a keen gardener and I liked the story and the setting. The women are all strong and interesting characters and the plot is engrossing.
I strongly recommend it.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Absolutely loved this book. If you love war time stories with a little bit of romance this book is for you. It has loveable characters that you can sympathise with during this very difficult time having the prospect of loosing a loved over and overcoming the unfair treatment of women who were extremely remarkable during this time taking over being the bread winner.
It's 1915 and the men are signing up for war. Louisa Taylor dreams of being a gardener. She had grown up on a hop farm in Kent. She's estranged from her violent husband. Ivy Adams has grown up around plants. Her boyfriend, Jim is a trainee gardener at Kew. Bernie is a former teacher. He's looking for meaningful employment, hoping to escape conscription. Then there's Lady Russell (Winniefred) who soon becomes a friend to them all.
The story primarily focuses on Ivy. The women are all strong characters who form a strong bond whilst working together. They are also keen on the women's suffragette movement and the fight for equal pay. A story of friendship and love. There is some true events mixed in that happened concert ing the suffragettes. This is a nice and easy book to read.
I would like to thank NetGalley Orion Publishing Group and the author Posy Lovell for my ARC in exchange for a honest review.
When I got into The Kew Garden Girls I was really enthralled. I liked Louisa and Ivy and thought they had such guts to join the Suffragettes who were quite a feisty group. Then there was poor Bernie, a good decent bloke who just didnt like war or the thought of killing someone.
It was probably unlikely that Ivy and Jim could have hid him in the crypt but who knows? It made for an enjoyable story .
I was very pleased when Jim came back to Ivy.
I have not read Posy Lovell before but will do again.
Thank you again for my Arc copy.
This was a great story about friendship and love during the hardships of the Second World War. The historical references to the Suffragettes were really insightful and thought provoking.
I loved the use of flowers for the meanings in the letters between Jim and Ivy, and the letter garden was described beautifully.
