Californian politics and social history all weighing in to extract what they can from the discovery of a skeleton. It;s a juggle for the coroner's investigator, as they have to dig into decades of memory.
This is a slow burn thriller.
I found the plot somewhat confusing. This wasn’t my favourite book in the series but I would carry on reading.
Sadly this book just was not for me. This sat on my kindle for quite some time - twice I have attempted to read and twice I did not finish.
Thankyou for the opportunity but I will not be providing feedback on any commercial sites for this book.
Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
Another crime thriller from the Kellerman stable and well-written as usual. Holds your I Teresa from the start but it's a slow burner so you need to persevere with it. Worth reading although not my favourite of his books.
A slow burner however really enjoyed and worth sticking with. Characters likeable and a well written interesting plot!
Lost souls by Jonathan Kellerman.
When infant remains are found by developers demolishing a local park, a devastating cold case is brought back to light.Deputy Coroner Clay Edison is black.
A good read with good characters. I did like Clays character. 4*.
A slow burn of a novel that is the third in a series. Unfortunately, I could not get into the story.
A fabulous book which I could not put down. Really easy to read, gripping and wonderfully told story that I would recommend to others!!
A great crime thriller that was a little different to others I’ve read.
It had a good storyline and great characters. I think it was slightly slower in parts and did feel myself leaving the storyline but with it being so intriguing I wanted to finish.
I feel had I already read the previous books in the series I may have been more invested in the story which is only my opinion on the overall book.
I wanted to love it but unfortunately not as much as I had hoped.
However this hasn’t put me off reading this author and will likely try again from book ins.
Deputy Coroner Clay Edison is called to a construction site at Berkley university, a baby’s remains have been found. No sooner than he brings the remains to the morgue, he gets call from a wealthy tech millionaire who believes they might the sister he never knew. So begins another slow burning, fascinating hunt to identify who buried their baby in the park. Fairly early on Clay discovered the bones were male and could not be those of the missing sister. Despite having a new born and sharing childcare duties with his wife Amy, Clay is determined to discover who the bones belong to and find the missing sister, even though no one seems to be sharing any information.
Lost souls is yet another wonderful novel by Jonathan Kellerman. I have not read any of the Clay Edison books before but this did not impact my enjoyment. Jonathan writes in a very open and inviting way, the characters all feel like friends and I thoroughly enjoyed the way the story unfolded, piece by piece as Clay delves deeper and deeper. I will definitely be reading the previous novels of this series as it is as excellent as the Alex Delaware novels.
While I'm a big fan of Jonathan Kellerman, I don't feel quite the same about his son Jesse, so if I'd been offered a review copy of this book I may well have turned it down. As it happens this just arrived in the post - and I'm very pleased it did.
This is the third in the 'Clay Edison' series but it wasn't spoiled by not having read the preceding books.
Clay Edison is the Deputy Coroner working the graveyard shift in a Californian suburb when he's called out to the discovery of a dead infant uncovered by developers working in a local park. It will be Edison's job to find the cause of death and determine the child's identity. This is a particularly poignant case as Edison and his wife are just coming to terms with the arrival of their own small daughter.
Prompted by news of the discovery Edison is approached by a man who is trying discover what happened to his sister who went missing as a small child some fifty years previously. Touched by the man's situation Edison embarks on a private investigation.
Despite the similarities of the stories the investigations complement each other and I found this a quick and enjoyable read. I do wish, however, that I'd had a better idea of what a coroner's role was in the US.
Lost Souls by Jonathan Kellerman and Jessie Kellerman is a contemporary crime novel that had me guessing from the start. It is the third book in the Clay Edison series but can be read as a stand-alone.
Following a discovery of small bones, the hunt is on to find the identity and the truth. The reader joins the characters in the search for two babies of the 1960’s. The cases are similar and run parallel. The one search is for the child, the other for the parents.
Long buried secrets need to rise to the surface.
Families are complicated affairs – we view both discord from within and also harmony.
The plotline was complex and well thought out and executed, with realistic characters eliciting a variety of emotional responses.
Lost Souls would make a marvellous movie. I enjoyed the book and was entertained whilst trying to solve the crimes.
I received a free copy via Net Galley. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
I have read so many Jonathon Kellerman books and normally love them so much, I did struggle with this one and it did take me a while to finish reading it.
I was given a copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own
Lost Souls by Jonathan Kellerman and Jesse Kellerman.
Rating 4.4/5
An absorbing thriller, part of the Clay Edison series. Lost Souls is the first I’ve read in series and it can be read as a stand-alone. However, as I loved this gripping novel and the character of Clay Edison I will be looking at the other novels in this series.
A child’s bones are found and as Clay, the duty coroner is on night call he has to attend the scene. Thus the start of a complicated search to find the baby’s identity and arrange a funeral. Intertwined with the search is another, a brother’s searching for his long lost sister, last seen as a baby.
Whilst I loved Clay’s character, a conscientious member of the law enforcement, his life as a husband and father to the adorable Charlotte is beautiful. Unfortunately, she’s a wee insomniac but oh so enchanting.
There are quite a number of characters, some who I wouldn’t want to encounter in broad daylight never mind in the dark of the night. Others, I will remember for a long time: a mother’s love who had me in tears, heart rendering memories. The underside of Social Media also features strongly and it’s terrifying affects.
Lost Souls will take you on journeys, at times complicated but always gripping. The Messrs Kellerman are without doubt greatly talented novelists at the top of their game.
I would like to thank them, Penguin Random House and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this superb novel.
Will there ever be a book by Jonathan Kellerman I don't enjoy?!
I have read most of his books and again this is another one I thoroughly enjoyed. Good plot, characters and very well written.
Really enjoyed getting to know Clay throughout this novel. Two disparate mysteries with little to no sleep kept him on his toes.
This is my first novel by the Kellerman father-son combo and I loved the deft handling and assurance demonstrated in their juggling of the different strands of the novel.
The plot proper begins with the discovery of human infantile remains during the redevelopment of a park adjacent to the university. Already a controversial project, a chaotic avalanche of student and ideological politics piles onto the investigation, making work near impossible for the police and coroner’s office.
Even without this, Deputy Coroner Clay Edison is already exhausted by his home life, with a hectic work schedule which barely allows him time to see his wife and daughter. Yet beforehand knows it, instead of dealing with one difficult and incendiary case, he finds that he is dealing with 2.
The Kellermans keep complex plots moving at pace whilst cleverly interweaving character-based storylines throughout and seasoning the mix with satirical potshots aplenty. Every loose end is tied neatly in a bow at the end for the reader without ever feeling obvious or contrived. It was both an entirely satisfying read and an exercise in tight, unsentimental crime writing. Masterly.
This is the third in the series and a gripping new thriller with the main character Deputy coroner Clay Edison investigating two cold cases.
The plot was really interesting, having the main story and a secondary story, with an intricate investigation and a really good mystery with twists that I did not see coming.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend this to any mystery fans
I enjoyed this book - however it loses a couple of stars simply because at times I found it slow.... but at other times it had so many side plots and characters that it was too complicated!
Howeverm I enjoyed catching up with Deputy Coroner Clay Edison and will continue to follow the series...
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in return for an honest review :-)
