A gothic atmospheric novel that kept my attention throughout. Good characterisation and a fast paced thrilling read in parts.

This was a read I should have done during Spooktober as it had the same feeling as books like The September House where you have a freaky house filled with ghosts and tragedies. Nicole and Daniel Price have found the perfect house and an old one at that, however just before the move for Daniel and his family, they are involved in a car crash. Nicole passed away and his daughter Caitlyn was injured but survived. Now Daniel must maneuver life in their new home as a single father. However, as they are about to learn, they are not alone in their house as strange things start happening including Daniel seeing Nicole's ghost, having nightmares, hearing his daughter Caitlyn playing with ghosts, and imaginary friends who aren't imaginary in the sense they did exist at one point. Nightingale House goes back and forth to the 1900's where we meet young Rebecca who has just turned seventeen and has been given a journal as a present. In it, she writes about the older man Thomas Carrington whom she has an affair, and his family and in the present time, Daniel and his daughter. How are the two time periods connected and can Daniel help the ghosts move on to the other side or will they be stuck here forever and Daniel be driven crazy? Find out in this horror / supernatural novel "Nightingale House" by Steve Frech.

I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.

Well, this is it. Can't take the story any more. The blurb intrigued me. However, to be honest, I felt right away that this book was not for me. But I thought I would read on and see if the story would grow on me. It didn't. Both storylines in the book are boring and it's laughable to call this book horror. On to the next book, hopefully, a better one...

I would like to thank HQ Digital and the Netgalley website for allowing me to read this book.

The story takes place at the Nightingale house and up there will be a new beginning for Daniel Price widower and his daughter Caitlyn.

Except that Daniel can't find his feet in this house, he feels a cold sensation in the bedroom and a sort of dripping moving from room to room. Someone seems to whisper late at night: "I can't sleep". And Daniel will learn more about the family that used to live there. It seems that there was betrayal and murder.

A book read in one go so much I was hooked on the story so gripping, addictive, captivating, full of suspense and twists with very endearing characters.

When I read the premise for this book I was very excited because I love anything to do with a haunted house! I felt like this book had the potential to be great but was just meh. I didn't hate it but I definitely didn't love it.

I was engaged in the story enough to keep going and wanted to get to the end however I felt the writing was missing something. The book had a great premise and some thrilling moments but fell flat on the dialogue, especially for the daughter.

I would still recommend this book if you're looking for a quick, thrilling read.

This one was a complete mood-DNF. I was initially excited for the crazy horror vibes, but by the time that I got to the actual book in mid-November, I was completely over the Halloween vibes. I tried reading it during two separate situations, but the initial story wasn't sticking to my tastes.

It also had a bland reading taste that I tend to see in some horror novels which give a slow start to the plot. I just wasn't in the mood to read this kind of story and ended up putting it aside..

Daniel and his daughter, Caitlyn, have moved to an old mansion house. Daniel chose the house with his late wife, who was tragically killed in accident. He decides to move there anyway as it’ll be a fresh start for him and his young daughter.

Within days of moving to the house, Daniel can’t sleep, and is hearing and seeing things. Caitlyn keeps chatting about a girl she’s been playing with. Daniel thinks it’s an imaginary friend, but she’s insistent that the girl is real.

The story is mostly told from Daniel’s point of view, with some parts written by a young woman who lived in the town in the 1900s.

This is a pretty standard formula for a ghost story, and not that creepy. It’s very easy to read, and I read it in a day.

The plot is a little predictable and the ending wasn’t anything surprising. I felt that in the last 1/4 or so, all the other characters had been forgotten about and weren’t mentioned again.

However, the main characters were likeable and it was a light read. I would probably read more from this author.

Thanks to NetGalley and HQ Digital for providing me with a copy of this book for review.

It was supposed to be a freshstart for them. Instead they are living a nightmare that has become their life. This book is kind of dark and has a definite creepy vibe. The characters are very realistic. The story is well written and very engaging. This is a book best read with the lights on.

What an absolute cracker of a book! I love how dark an atmospheric it is, I was seriously quite scared reading it which is unusual for me. I really enjoyed the way the story flitted between the timelines , it really makes the story flow. Steve Frech was totally unknown to me when I read this book but I will 100% be reading more. Absolutely brilliant!

I love to read books set in old spooky buildings and this ticked that box perfectly! What a page turner!

After his first book reaches the New York Times bestseller list, Daniel and his wife Nicole decide they want to move to a big old house with character. After only 36 hours of searching online, Nicole finds the Nightingale House. This looks like the perfect house for them to move to with their young daughter, Caitlyn.

They went yo view it immediately and decided there and then they would buy it.

Sadly Nicole was never to move in to the Nightingale House as she died in a car crash, with her husband driving the car.

Daniel and Caitlyn move in to the house, unaware the house has many hidden secrets. When Daniel hears his daughter whispering in her bedroom he thinks she has an imaginary friend.

Then he begins to see shadows and hear noises which have no explanation.

We are also given excerpts from a diary which was written over 100 years earlier about previous owners of the house.

This is not a book to be read before bedtime!

I loved it!

A house with a tragic past. Daniel and daughter Caitlyn move in to the beautiful Nightingale House after the death of his wife Nicole. Almost immediately strange noises, unexplained drips, weird shadows and disturbed nights are constantly happening. There’s also a 1900’s journal showing what led up to the event. Whilst I loved the cover (spooky), the premise and the way it was written, it wasn’t chilling or creepy enough for me - not even one goosebump. It was entertaining and passes the time nicely. A great story for anyone who likes to be scared, but not too much!

First things first, I love ghost horror and haunted houses are my thing! So if you want to pick this book, don’t think much, pick it you have my blessing. Its a classic old time haunted house story, that is chillingly good and entertaining. Go in blind & enjoy the ride.

Thank you Netgalley & HQ digital for the arc in exchange for an honest opinion.

After his wife’s passing, widower Daniel Price and his daughter Caitlyn are hoping for a new start. The family had purchased this house prior to the tragedy and at the time it seemed like a dream. Daniel’s new found success as a writer had afforded them this beautiful new home, but moving in now is almost bittersweet. However, Nightingale House isn’t quite all that it seems. Something sinister seems to hang in its halls.

This house has a history. Can you really have a haunted setting without one? Oftentimes, for me, whatever story molds a setting is the best part of any horror tale focused on a particular location. For the Nightingale House, of course something bad must have happened in its past to keep the ghosts within its land and walls. This book touches on both the past and the present, running two timelines in alternating chapters.

The book is creepy, but falls just a little shy of actually scary. The author does a good job of building up on the tension of the present story. The past is told through the diary pages of a teenage girl (and it certainly reads that way). The strongest part of this book were the characters, it makes hoping for a good ending easier. You are rooting for Daniel to persevere against something out to do him and his family harm.

For haunted house based horror stories there tends to be a format. Nightingale House didn’t really break the mold on that front. The prose itself is simple and easy to read and digest, but came across as just a little bit halting at sometimes.
