Thanks Netgalley and Harper Collins HQ Digital for the ARC!
Recently widowed writer Daniel and his daughter Caitlyn move into Nightingale House looking for a fresh start. But Nightingale House is restless and it isn't long before Daniel is having strange dreams and Caitlyn's imaginary friend doesn't appear so imaginary after all 🙈Is Nightingale House trying to tell them something?😬
4⭐- A great, jaunty scare that's not gory, more a classic style haunted house horror, which I'm a total sucker for! The story is presented from two angles, one present Nightingale House and the other set 100 years previously, which always works very well for this type of horror, and the author knits it nicely together.
This is a great haunted house/ghost story. It follows the usual roles, conventions and tropes of the haunted house story but is just executed in such a lovely way and has some really unique details. It’s a very vivid and deeply felt story about a father dealing with guilt over the loss of his wife. I am somewhat particular about my ghost stories - the Haunting of Hill House and its ilk are my favorites - and this author lives up to my high expectations by honoring the traditional ghost story in a modern setting with writing and atmosphere worthy of the masters. I enjoyed every minute of this page turner, which was beautiful, engrossing and scary. Frech just nailed the emotional and allegorical aspects of the ghost story, which to me is really just as important as the scares (which he also nailed!). Thankful to NetGalley for turning me onto Steve Frech, as I will definitely read his other books. 4.5 stars rounded up for this enjoyable read.
Thanks to HQ Digital, NetGalley and Steve Frech for those ghost story perfect for quarantine, in exchange for my honest review.
A suddenly-rich novelist buys a big old house. As his wife has recently died in an horrific accident, spookiness is bound to come knocking on the big old door.
Neither the author or his young daughter can settle in this dream home. Memories of his dead wife haunt the narrator and the little girl makes up imaginary friends. As all old houses have creaks and groans, the writer has to decide whether the shadows and thumps are coming from his grief, imagination or something more supernatural.
There are two stories, one told in the present in the first person from the author's perspective. It is written in a casual style, which makes it very current and easy to read. The second is from the point of view of a teenage girl from 1900. Here the style is also first person in a diary format but also very modern. The attitudes are not as they would have been in 1900, especially concepts such as accountability and responsibility in relation to a married man showing an interest in a teenage girl. This did not come across as authentic.
The theme is one of coming to terms with grief, rather than a ghost story. An enjoyable if unoriginal story, not in the realms of Stephen King or The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson with regards to atmosphere and suspense. Nightingale House is an engaging and familiar mystery with a bit of a disappointing ending.
For easy distraction reading, this slow-burn mystery will do the trick.
I frequently read haunted house literature, so this title had a lot to live up to. As such, it ended up in the "meh" category for me. The characters and action are pretty standard fare for novels of this type. I found myself more interested in the journal entries than anything happening in the present day.
Thank you, NetGalley and HQ Digital for my copy
I give this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Synopsis: Daniel Price is an author who loses his wife in an accident. He and his daughter Caitlyn moved to the Nightingale House, hoping for a new beginning. But the house has secrets, and Not long after Daniel and Caitlyn moved, there were odd cold feeling in the master bedroom, mysterious water dripping sounds, and whispers echoing through the corridors. What secrets does this house have? And how can Daniel solve a hundred plus mystery?
Here I go again, drawn to stories that kept me up all night. Daniel and his daughter are both still grieving om losing a wife and a mom, and then they have to deal with the sinister force surrounding their new house. A bit too much of torture, doesn't it? I couldn't put this book down, and it’s creepy and intriguing. Daniel’s love for her daughter is heartwarming. Unraveling a hundred plus-year-old secrets wasn't easy but not impossible, and it was revealed in a frightening but fantastic way. I love all the characters, and the narration between past and present is excellent. I enjoyed reading it.
Awesome read.
Had me hooked from the start, finished it in a day.
Highly recommended and look forward to reading more from the author.
Thank you to NetGalley and HQ Digital for the arc of Nightingale House by Steve Frech
Thank you to Steve Frech for writing this sensational gripping book.
This follows a widow who lost his wife, leaving behind him and their young daughter. They end up moving into a historical old house, not long after moving in strange things start to happen including whispers in the night, dripping noises and the master bedroom is very cold and not inviting. But who is lurking within this house but why?? But..... it is none other than his deceased wife.. who is haunting them... There is also a 100 year old Mystery to the Nightingale House. Told over two perspectives, Daniel and a young woman, Rebecca.
Steve Frech had you hooked and sucked in from page 1 all the way to the end. A very gripping and captivating read i really enjoed all elements of this classic ghost story!
Definitely Recommend

I kept thinking "I'll read one more chapter" & then I finished it. Can't wait to read more from the author!!

NUMBER OF HEARTS: 3
One House
Two Families
And a deep dark secret that could destroy them all.
Nightingale House tells us the story of the house from the present and the past. We get to follow Daniel Price and his daughter Caitlyn in the present. A young family trying to learn to live with the loss of Nicole, Daniel’s wife and Caitlyn’s mother. We also follow the Carrington Family who lived in the house back in 1900.
This was my first book by Steve Frech. I enjoyed the book but it was a little predictable for me. But all in all it was a good book and I enjoyed the journey of the story. If you like a good haunting story you will enjoy this book.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & HQ Digital in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
Do not start reading this at night! It’s an old fashioned ghost story and one of the best. It should definitely be made into a movie and, since 5 stars is the most I can give, Nightingale House gets 5 supernatural stars.
After the tragic death of his wife Nicole, writer Daniel Price and his daughter Caitlyn move into the stately, historical Nightingale House for a new start. Daniel is looking forward to using the “writer’s room” in the house and hoping the Caitlyn will quickly make friends in her new school. From the first night, things go terribly wrong. Daniel can’t sleep in the master bedroom and takes to the sofa downstairs. Caitlyn’s only new friend is the mysterious, somewhat vindictive Katherine. The slowly building suspense in the story is cut by a more than a century old diary written by the young daughter of the town pharmacist describing small town life and her girlish dreams.
And the suspense does build! Desperate to protect his daughter, Daniel tries to understand the evil that lives in Nightingale House. Until the final pages, it eludes him. Fueled by grief, murder, betrayal and hope, Nightingale House is a great read, a book you won’t want or be able to put down. Enjoy!
Thanks to NetGalley, HQ Digital and Steve Frech for this ARC.
This is definitely a page turner. I love this thrilling story - I couldn’t put it down! It will definitely give you chills and make you listen a little more closely to those bumps in the night. The author pulls you in from page one and never lets you go. You feel such a great affection for the main characters and their emotions feel so raw and real. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
I went into this book mostly blind and expecting horror. First I want to say this is not horror. It is a ghost story, and a well written one at that.
I really fell in love with the father/daughter relationship between Daniel and Caitlin. Daniel is dealing with the grief of his wife’s sudden death and relocating into a new house. The house was purchased prior to the accident that killed his wife so moving in is bittersweet for Daniel and Caitlin.
The story is filled with creepiness, it’s very atmospheric, and the house gave off all the gothic vibes. Imaginary friends that just might ghosts always freak me out a bit. I don’t want to give too much away but if you’re looking for a ghost story with a twist pick this book up.
It’s fast paced and highly bingeable, which tends to be my favorite kind of book. It gave me some serious Whisper Man vibes so if you liked that book you’ll probably enjoy this one too!
Thank you @Netgalley and @hqdigital and #stevefrench for an advanced copy of the book for my honest review.
After a brutal car accident that killed his young wife, Daniel and his daughter Caitlin fill the need to move into the historic old mansion that Nicole wanted to redecorate. Both Daniel and Caitlin are feeling the loss of Nicole, Daniel with sleepless nights and possible hallucinations and Caitlin with imaginary friends.
Alternating chapters of the present life of Daniel and Caitlin with the past life in the early 1900s of Rebecca Harker the novel is fast paced and suspenseful as Caitlin seems to be friends with a young ghost named Katherine. What is the connection between the house and Katherine? Why can only Caitlin see her? What are all the strange cold feelings and noises in the house? As Daniel strives to make life normal again for the two of them, while trying to write his second novel, things become more bizarre.
Daniel begins to research the history of the old house and finds out about the disappearance of a young girl named Katherine years before. What is it that has a hold on Daniel and Caitlin? Is Nicole part of the strange experiences? How can Daniel "rescue" Caitlin from whatever seems to have a hold on her and wish her harm?
This is a light ghost story along with a story about family relationships and how to move on after the death of a loved one.
Daniel and his daughter Caitlyn move into Nightingale House not long after the death of his wife. They are both still grieving, and for Caitlyn, this takes the form of making up stories. Daniel begins to get frustrated with Caitlyn as she blames things on her new imaginary friend, until he realizes that her friend may not be imaginary after all. A ghosty story, not my normal favorites, but not bad. I enjoyed it even though it was somewhat predictable and not really suspenseful. 3 stars.
This was a great read! It reminded me of "The Haunting of Hill House" (the series, not so much the book). It was a good ghost story that was a bit predictable, but one that you don't want to put down! It was a very quick read and very engaging! I highly recommend it!
Thank you to Steve Frech, HQ Digital and NetGalley for an advance copy of this book! This review was also posted on Goodreads.
First and foremost- this isn't a horror story. It's more of a haunted house ghost story and a story about grief. Tragically, Nicole is killed just after she, Daniel, and Caitlyn find Nightingale House. Daniel decides that he and Caitlyn should move in anyway- it's going to be a fresh start for them, except it's not. Caitlyn, in particular, is having trouble which manifests itself in an imaginary friend - or is it? Daniel's decision to research the history of the house opens up a whole different perspective. His story is interspersed with diary entries from Rebecca, a young woman in 1900. No spoilers as to how this relates to today but know that it's nicely done. Daniel and Caitlyn are totally believable and you will want to give both of them a hug. I liked this more than I expected- in part because it was different from what I expected. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read.
This book was fantastic! I am a new fan of Steve Frech and will definitely be reading more of his books. It is hard to write paranormal and it is even harder to make the reader scared! This book is exactly what I was hoping for and more.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for a copy of this book to review, it was such a pleasure to read.
Nightingale House
by Steve Frech
Excellent book !
A fragile family moves into Nightingale house, a beautiful old waterfront mansion in a quaint village located in New England.
Told in duel timelines, which I tend to favor, the present must rid the house of it's dark past to survive.
The reader is hooked quickly with a shocking development in the beginning and keeps it's fast pace making this a hard book to put down.
Daniel and Caitlyn move into the spooky mansion to be immediately troubled by strange whispers, noises and apparitions. A dormant spirit has long been at rest but has awoken to make the lives of it's new residents hellish. Best haunted house book I have read in awhile.
If you enjoyed “The Haunting of Hill House” and writers like Shirley Jackson, Stephen King & Simone St. James, you are sure to love Nightingale House.
Nightingale House by Steve Frech...
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars 🌟💫...
At last a proper old fashioned ghost story! I’ve been looking for one for a while and this was great to read. Throughout I could imagine it being made into a horror film 👻. I even got goosebumps at some parts....when children say ‘she’s behind you’ it always gives me chills ❄️! But with it being a book you didn’t have the scary music building suspense so BAM a scary part just comes from nowhere! I also really enjoyed reading the snippets from the past and trying to tie them in to present day events 😊.
This was unputdownable and I read it late into the night to finish (which probably wasn’t the best idea it being a horror 🙈 haha).

If you’re looking for a paranormal horror that really captures the imagination then I highly recommend!!
