The story is told in dual timelines in 1998 and 2020. I'm not a fan of multiple timelines and POV, but it works so well in this book.
In 1998, brothers came to French Alps with their girlfriends on holidays and one of them went missing while skiing in stormy weather. It seems like a tragic accident. In 2020, there are people staying in a chalet, some of them have connections to the accident with their secrets.

Despite the fact that I enjoyed this book a lot, I actually don't know what genre I should categorise this in. It is a crime book, but nothing thriller really happened, while there are long stories about couples who have only one way romance which are very intriguing😄I'm quite surprised that I didn't feel frustrated at all reading about them as they are all unlikable.

I had difficulty with the pace a bit, however the writing gripped me tightly, slowly revealing the background and the true intentions of the characters.
I marked this book as 4 stars out of 5, enjoyed it a lot!⭐⭐⭐⭐

Firstly I must apologise to the author and publisher for the delay in reviewing this book that I initially read back in January but then a blogging and reading slump got in the way meaning that the review never got written. I'm slowly getting back on track so hoping to catch up on getting the reviews written for the few books that I've read so far this year.

The Chalet is a dual timeline story set in a French ski resort and explores what happened when two brothers went skiing with their tour guides but veer off-piste and only one returned home. Twenty two years later it looks like the mountain has released its hold and the body of the missing skier is finally found. But for some they'd rather the mountain had kept its hold and the part they played had remained hidden.

In 1998 Will and Andy had been staying at the resort with their girlfriends. They'd always had a competitive nature with one another and it was this rivalry that came into play on that fateful day. But for their ski guides if the truth came out about what exactly happened it could threaten their whole livelihoods.

Flash forward to the present day where we meet two couples who are staying in the same lodge as the brothers did, Hugo and his partner Ria plus Simon, his wife Cass, their baby and nanny Sarah. Unlike the brothers previously, this is no leisure trip instead Hugo is trying to entice Simon to invest in his business. It soon became apparent that some of the characters in the present day also had links to the events of the past which they hope will never be revealed. There is also a third party who has immersed themselves into the background who is there on a mission, but what exactly is their story?

Personally for me there were a few too many characters and I was constantly trying to remind myself of who was who and their relationship to the others which spoiled the flow whilst reading. None of the characters were likeable, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, but I just didn't really feel any empathy for any of them not even the ones who had been deeply affected by the events of the past and how it had a knock-on effect on their lives in the intervening years.

The premise of The Chalet sounded good but sadly it didn't quite live up to expectations for me and I found myself getting bored and it was only because I wanted to know how it all played out that I continued reading.

Unputdownable!
Fast-paced, kept me on the edge of my seat. Thank you Netgalley and publisher Harper Collins for letting me read an ARC in return for my honest opinion

An enjoyable book that flips between 2008 and the present day, it is situated in a ski resort in France and is about a young man that dies whilst getting lost in the mountains. The story flips between then, when the man died and what had happened in the past, and now, a group of people holidaying at the same resort. The two timelines are cleverly intertwined to make an interesting story that keeps the readers interested.

The Chalet by Catherine Cooper is a thoroughly enjoyable thriller. It’s tense and atmospheric, almost addictive! The plot is well thought through and is alternates between the past and the present. This is a new author for me and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a really good thriller.

My thanks to Netgalley and HarperCollins Publishers for the opportunity to read this book.

This was the first book I've read by this author. I enjoyed the pacing, the characters were well written, and I thought the story was well thought out. The only negative is that the back and forth of the chapters from past to present could get confusing at times. I will try another book by this author in the future.

For a debut book I was very impressed with The Chalet. I was initially a little confused by the changing timelines and character names but once I had got those sorted I really enjoyed this book. I think I'll stick to the apres ski rather than the slopes if this novel is anything to go by!

Okay so this has possibly put me off skiing for life! An addictive thriller, told through a number of narratives to keep the reader guessing, this was a chillingly good read set in a luxurious ski resort and featuring a cold case.

Wow what a fabulous read. When Hugo and Ria go on a skiing trip with the hope of a buisness deal being done, a tragedy from 20 years before comes to light and things aren't what they seem for some of the characters in the story. The story which is told brilliantly by the author and the location which is great ,comes together with a great ending when things are finally revealed. I loved it

This was a fairly entertaining read which kept my interest throughout- though I found the story of events from the past far more readable than the events from the present. Despite the unlikeable characters in both timelines and the convoluted way that the key characters are ultimately brought together into one Alpine chalet, I wanted to see how it all played out and confirm my predictions. Only one twist surprised me as I hadn’t worked out how one character fitted into the past, but the rest was fairly easy to work out from the unfolding narrative.
Overall this was a competent debut, with an interesting split narrative- past/ present and a number of viewpoints within each timeframe. The setting was vividly drawn, and matched well to my memories of ski resorts. It lingered too long in the present day minutiae of marital and business relationships- and perhaps needed a sympathetic character that survived! I would certainly be happy to try another book by this author.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my opinions.

Really enjoyed this book. A good easy read that kept me turning the pages. Enjoyed the setting and the two timelines which kept me guessing all the way. Like how there were different points of view which added to the intrigue and storyline. Very much recommend.

A psychological thriller with several twists that is all about revenge and it's set in the Alps. There are two timelines one set in the present. The first one is set in 1998 in a French skying resort, the second is set in 2020 in the same resort. In 1998 two brothers go on a skiing holiday with their girlfriends and only one returns alive. In 2020 the body of the missing body is found and it's the beginning of the revenge. But it's hard to know who wants revenge, there are several people that could be guilty in a fairly claustrophobic setting that reminded me a bit of a Agatha Christie's novel. It's easy to read and the dual timelines are not annoying, in some books they might be.

I enjoyed the premise of this book and was excited to read it unfortunately the excitedment was soon lost as I could not enjoy the characters. I found them to be lacking. I struggled to get into this book and whilst the scene setting did paint a beautiful picture I thought some of the plot required too much coincidence and I didn't enjoy the change in time or character view points some of them were confusing or too cliched, particularly when it was of the child view.
The concept of having everyone with these links ending up in the same place was extraordinary but would have been OK if I could buy into the characters a little more.
