Due to a sudden, unexpected passing in the family a few years ago and another more recently and my subsequent (mental) health issues stemming from that, I was unable to download this book in time to review it before it was archived as I did not visit this site for several years after the bereavements. This meant I didn't read or venture onto netgalley for years as not only did it remind me of that person as they shared my passion for reading, but I also struggled to maintain interest in anything due to overwhelming depression. I was therefore unable to download this title in time and so I couldn't give a review as it wasn't successfully acquired before it was archived. The second issue that has happened with some of my other books is that I had them downloaded to one particular device and said device is now defunct, so I have no access to those books anymore, sadly.
This means I can't leave an accurate reflection of my feelings towards the book as I am unable to read it now and so I am leaving a message of explanation instead. I am now back to reading and reviewing full time as once considerable time had passed I have found that books have been helping me significantly in terms of my mindset and mental health - this was after having no interest in anything for quite a number of years after the passings. Anything requested and approved will be read and a review written and posted to Amazon (where I am a Hall of Famer & Top Reviewer), Goodreads (where I have several thousand friends and the same amount who follow my reviews) and Waterstones (or Barnes & Noble if the publisher is American based). Thank you for the opportunity and apologies for the inconvenience.
I enjoyed this book, I hadn’t read the first one but I didn’t feel it mattered, I may go back and read it anyway.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me read this book in exchange for a review.
I will be putting this review on Amazon too.
A slow burning plot that was a tad too predictable. I always enjoy Jeffrey Archers character building and this was no exception. I would recommend reading book 1 here as although you can read Hidden in Plain Sight as a stand-alone there are quite a few tie ins here. Not one of Archer’s best but the cliff hanger ending will keep me coming back for more.
Jeffrey Archer has the ability to create twists and turns like no other author. A great page Turner from the off.
This was an enjoyable read. Although it is a second book in a series, it can be read alone so its doesn't matter if you've not read the first book. A gripping story with good strong characters.
Another Jeffery Archer book that is definitely recommended.
Thank you Netgalley.
I received a copy of the book from Netgalley to review. Thank you for the opportunity.
A great, twist and turn filled story with great writing. There is an interesting cast of characters with lots of funny quips. There is plenty of action and drama.
A good read.
Hidden in Plain Sight by Jeffrey Archer is the second book is this brilliant Detective William Warwick series. I have just loved reading this series, I found this series has just got better and I am looking forward reading this next book. Well done to Jeffrey Archer for a new fantastic series.
I highly recommend this series.
Big Thank you to NetGalley, St. Martin’s Press and the incredible Jeffrey Archer for an advance copy.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for this ARC.
I’ve read several of this authors books in the past and was pleased to be approved for this one. Whilst this is the second book in a new series and I haven’t read the first one, this book can be read on it’s own. I enjoyed this book and thought it was well written, and I found the characters to be very likeable and believable. The story had a good plot line, I liked that there were quite a few different story threads running alongside each other which did grab and hold my attention throughout. As always, there are twists in the plot that I didn’t expect although when they did pop up they didn’t really wow me. The book has a cliff hanger ending which sets the next one up nicely. Overall this was a good, easy read just one that didn’t overly wow me. I probably will at some point read the first and next book when out. 3.5 stars
Detective William Warwick has plenty on his plate, a promotion to the drugs squad and an incipient wedding plus fatherhood, however he also has his nemesis Miles Faulkner haunting him. After Faulkner is caught in a drugs swoop Warwick's lawyer family leads on the case whilst Warwick himself is involved in the hunt for a drug baron called The Viper.
This is the second book in the series about a 1980s detective in the unreconstructured Metropolitan Police of the time. The story bounds along at an agreeable pace and is mildly diverting but this isn't high quality crime fiction. It's a bit of a mash-up of a police procedural and one of Archer's standard epic novels, multiple characters and plotlines all intertwining, which is not a bad thing.
I really enjoyed the first William Warwick book, this time it took longer to settle, maybe because the characters had to be reintroduced.
Again the author has produced an enthralling read with great character, twisting plot line and a bit of a cliff hanger.
As the now DS Warwick enjoys promotion at work, so his private life is changing too. . This well crafted book is both entertaining and an excellent sequel .
William Warwick is back, and he's been promoted to Detective Sergeant. With the promotion comes a transfer to the Drugs Squad and immediate assignment to apprehend a dealer with an extensive network across South London.
Whilst the investigation progresses, William runs into enemies old and new and the net around the criminals begins to close. But now the team must finalise a plan that they won't see coming...
Being a fan of Jeffrey Archer, I really enjoyed the first installment in this series. However, this second book landed a little off the mark for me. I felt it lacked the depth that you have come to expect from this author.
Although it was good to catch up with the characters, their development didn't seem to progress any further which was a shame. The Warwick family, who seemed larger than life in the previous novel, appeared infrequently this time and I missed their quick humour and sarcastic barbs towards each other a great deal.
This aside, I did still enjoy the story and will, without a doubt, continue with this series. I just hope there is a little more focus on the characters, rather than just the crime procedural, going forward.
Hidden In Plain Sight is the brilliant second book in the series following William Warwick at the start of his career.
These books can be read as stand alone novels, although I have read the first in the trilogy, Nothing Ventured, and would highly recommend that book.
Hidden In Plain Sight opens with Warwick having passed his sergeant exams and being transferred to the to the drugs squad. Despite the transfer, he runs into some familiar faces and cannot quite stay away from his love of the arts.
Jeffery Archer is on fine form yet again with this cleverly plotted book. An exciting and thrilling read which I would highly recommend.
Thanks to NetGalley for a Kindle copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Another cracking read - and series - from an author who rightly deserves the title of 'master storyteller'!
Newly promoted to detective sergeant, William Warwick finds himself attached to a new unit targeting those at the top of the drug supply chain; those who distribute to the smaller links who do the street deals. As he and others pursue the criminal known only to them as the 'Viper', an old adversary also pops up in his sights and William has to double his focus. The only way to be successful is to do so in clear view so as not to arouse suspicions; in other words, Hidden in Plain Sight.
I haven't got around to reading the first in this series yet, but as they are stand-alone books I will endeavour to catch up at a later date and I couldn't resist getting my teeth into this one! Having read every one of this author's works in the past, I know how smart and clever his stories are; William Warwick was mentioned in the Clifton Chronicles so I was eager to investigate. What an exciting read! No less than I expected - well crafted with wonderful characters and a creative story line which kept me riveted, I have been totally enthralled. Then the ending! As soon as book three is available, I shall be grabbing it, that's for certain. A totally terrific thriller which deserves so much more than the five sparkling stars I can give it. If you haven't read this author's novels, please do - you will not be disappointed.
My thanks to the publisher for my copy via NetGalley; this is - as always - my honest, original and unbiased review.
In this second William Warwick novel, Archer well and truly hits his stride, spinning a fantastic new yarn that’s even slicker than the first.
All the familiar characters are back, from the Scotland Yard crew — Commander Hawskby, Lamont and Jackie — to Sir Julian QC and his junior, Grace, in the courtroom. Not forgetting chief villain, Miles Faulkner, who’s still as slippery as a bar of soap and fast shaping up to be William’s arch enemy.
Now a detective sergeant, William is tasked with helping to track down a drugs baron, the Viper, who’s controlling the manufacture and distribution of cocaine across London. When he stumbles across a way to kill two birds with one stone — and see both the Viper and Faulkner behind bars — William deploys all his guile and nous to get the job done.
You have to admire the effortlessness of Archer’s storytelling. He really is the master of the hook, twist and double Salchow. His narrative flows at breakneck pace, sucking you in, ducking and diving, this way and that, until you’re almost dizzy with exhaustion.
The temptation is to read as fast as your brain can follow the words. But, beware! To do so is to risk missing many of Archer’s trademark subtle but witty one-liners in the dialogue.
It really is an immensely enjoyable romp of a read. And it’s made all the more authentic because of Archer’s first-hand experience of the British judicial system. As is his wont, he also peppers the narrative with random, mini anecdotes on all kinds of subjects. I wasn’t sure about these at first, but I’ve come to enjoy them as a fun quirk of Archer’s writing.
The book ends on a cliff hanger. Some readers will hate this, as it’s likely to be 12 months before the next book comes out and picks up where this one left off. But, it’s Jeffrey Archer we’re talking about. This what he does … and he does it better than most.
Pretty much what you'd expect from a Jeffrey Archer book - an exciting tale of derring-do albeit stocked with rather two-dimensional characters. Its a shame he relied more on stereotypes than developing the characters into interesting people, and being set in the 80s it is rather showing its age now. I did not really enjoy the opportunities he took to show off his knowledge - his characters would be unlikely to pontificate about the origin of expressions etc, and it just did not ring true - just the author indulging himself.
There were two strands to the story - the attempt by the Met to overthrow a major drug baron, using undercover officers and an exciting sting operation, and the machinations of a crook who's wife was keen to help get him convicted so she could make off with the proceeds of his crimes, allowing William Warwick's QC father and sister to prosecute the criminal, and for Warwick to use all his skill to ensure the evidence stands up.
Overall a quick, good read but not the heights of literary achievement.
Thank you to NetGalley and Pan Macmillan for allowing me access to the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
It’s 1986 & newly promoted, Detective Sergeant William Warwick has been reassigned to the drugs squad. His first case: to investigate a notorious south London drug lord known as the Viper. But as William and his team close the net around a criminal network unlike any they have ever encountered, he is also faced with an old enemy, Miles Faulkner whom we met in book 1.
This is the second book in the series, I'd recommend reading the first book to fully appreciate this one. Of course William appeared in The Clifton chronicles & I love that he’s now the main character in his own series. As you would expect the characters leap out of the page at you, the pace is fast & there are red herrings, twists & turns to keep you engrossed & guessing all the way through. The author is a master storyteller & once again had me enthralled from cover to cover. Please don’t start this book late at night as you’ll be in for a sleepless night
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Thank you to #NetGalley and #PanMacmillan for giving me an ARC of #HiddeninPlainSight by #JeffreyArcher in exchange with my honest review.
5 Stars - 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is the much anticipated second novel in the William Warwick series and sees the return of some much loved (and some not so loved) characters. Warwick is a newly promoted Detective Sergeant and has been reassigned to the drug squad. Warwick’s team are assigned to investigate a notorious drug lord and his investigations soon have him crossing paths with an old enemy.
I was very much looking forward to reading this having thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series. Archer definitely didn’t disappoint. This is a fast-paced book with two criminal investigations on the go to keep you engaged. The characters are further developed from the first book which is in fitting with Archers usual style. Overall this was a fantastic read and I would definitely recommend.
Jeffrey Archer is one of my favourite authors, I've been reading his books since I was a teenage (and that was a very long time ago!).
Yet again he has delivered a great readable book, easy to dive into, with interesting characters. His writing style just sucks you into the book. This is the second book starring William Warwick (the first was Nothing Ventured).
Dramatic court scenes, police raids and chases, and the daring-do of the master criminal, this is not your typical crime drama.
I would definitely recommend. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley and The Publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
3.5 stars rounded down
This a quick fun and easy read. Prefect to take your mind off the daily stresses of life and was perfect for my daily commute. Action packed and a new nemesis along with an old baddie for DS Warwick to deal with. As expected with a Jeffrey Archer series, it ended on a cliffhanger and I will be waiting eagerly for the next installment.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
a drug baron
court case
dodgy dealings
all are ongoing in this 2nd book of the series with william trying to apprehend the bad guy
a lot happens in this book and at times it can get a bit confusing but on the whole the ending is quite entertaining...
