The Grumpy Fairies by Bethan Stevens was a sweet and colourful and well illustrated book, that was fun to read and any small child will love this especially as we all think fairies are sweet and very helpful to young children.

This is where this book is fun; these fairies were "foot-stompy, frowny, bottom-lip-sticky-outy kind of grumpy"

I had so much fun reading this with my young nephew - he loved it. A BIG hit with him and his class.

I bet you thought that all fairies are kind and sweet didn’t you? Well, not these ones! They’re full-on pouty, frowny and pretty dissatisfied most of the time. But they’re also very clever, so when a hungry goblin turns up with a hankering for a grumpy fairy or two they come up with a cunning plan to avoid becoming dinner!

This book has such a great premise, which Bethan Stevens has executed to perfection. Wee Reader loves to spot the sneaky goblin on each page, while the fairies are too preoccupied by grumbling to notice. The tension and suspense really ramps up as the story progresses and the first time we read it WR almost jumped out of his seat, trying to warn the fairies of the approaching danger!

The muted, natural colour palette along with the expressive way in which the characters are illustrated give the book a very classic look, which is absolutely stunning. We are very much enjoying having this as one of our bedtime stories!

This is such an adorable book! It is sweet, as it teaches children about emotions and how acting certain ways can have an effect on you, the people you are near and the world round you. It shows that, if you are kind, it will shower you with luck and kindness, but anger and grumpiness can bring very bad luck..or trolls. It is a great books, with just as lovely illustrations,

This story is lots of fun. Everyone thinks fairies are sweet and helpful, but there are lots of fairies - usually the youngest ones - who are a "foot-stompy, frowny, bottom-lip-sticky-outy kind of grumpy" instead.

The grumpy fairies don't want to walk snails or water wildflowers. They're too busy stomping off through the forest to help the woodland animals they come across, or to notice the goblin who's been creeping up behind them...

Not all fairies are the charming, cheerful characters we expect them to be. Some fairies, especially the young ones, can be GRUMPY. Being grumpy can be a full-time job, so these grumpy fairies don't have time to help their fellow forest inhabitants and even have trouble hearing the warnings that a goblin is creeping around the forest looking for lunch.

In the wood, there live the fairies, tending to the wildlife. Well, most of them anyway. Because today, a few of them are quite grumpy, and that's a full-time job.

This one made me laugh and considerably lightened my mood, which was badly needed. We have beautiful pictures, an interesting world-building, and even a plot with a twist of usual tropes.
I don't really like the cutesy-fluffy-pink fairies little girls are bombarded with. Fairies only get interesting if there is more to them, like Tinkerbell who is so tiny she can only have one feeling at once and thus always goes all the way through with it, if it's smart or not. Or the fair folk, who are beautiful but appear more wise than their mishievous nature warrants.

In this case, we have grumpy little people I am sure everybody can relate to, and this concept is followed consequently to the very last sentence of this short but sweet book.

Don't let them tell you fairies are only for little girls dressed in pink and pick this up.

When we think of fairies, we often think of bright, happy and positive creatures. Though amongst themselves there are grumpy fairies and they stomp and scowl, moan and groan and refuse to help anyone.
When the animals try to warn the grumpy fairies of a troll lurking and his favourite meal, they ignore and stomp away...right into the path of a hungry troll who loves the sweet and sour flavour of a grumpy fairy.

How can this group of fairies save themselves?
This reads almost as a moral tale of learning kindness, helpfulness and gratitude.
Can the fairies find their positive way out of the mouth of the troll?
I wish I had this book for when my own children were stomping about the house and being grumpy, it may well have proven helpful.

Superb illustrations ensure we can empathise with the animals trying to warn the fairies but it is evident just how grumpy they are from detailed expressions and body language. Brilliantly conveyed.

A perfect assembly read aloud!

We love grumpy fairies so much more interesting that happy fairies! We loved all the pictures and a great story!

You may have thought fairies were sweet and helpful, but sometimes, you might come across a grumpy one, particularly if they are young.
In this beautifully illustrated story by Bethan Stevens, we learn that young fairies in particularly can be quite grumpy, less than helpful and pretty terrible listeners. As we journey through the forest with them, various creatures ask for help and with their refusal comes a warning which they ignore!

This story had a vibe of The Gruffalo, building up a picture of the monster to come, with a lovely message that being grumpy is a part of life but it feels good to help others.

I will definitely consider adding this to our classroom library to share with my class as it's a lovely story to share with young children.

I loved this book, it’s so wonderfully made and young children are going to love this book, it’s one that will be requested over and over. The illustrations were so beautiful and the story is easy to follow and is so enjoyable and fun.

It had a gruffalo vibe to it whilst reading, the fairies that are grumpy want to stay grumpy and don’t listen when they are told about a goblin lurking by each new friend they meet along the way.

This is such a fun and enjoyable book, I highly recommend this if you’ve got young children, they will love it.
