Despite a slow beginning, Sam Carrington's The Open House was a great, chilling story. I enjoyed reading the story from three different perspectives, as I believe it provided the book with a lot of depth. I definitely second guessed myself a bunch of different times throughout the story, but it was what kept me turning the page. I would definitely read more by Sam Carrington in the future.
A twisty thriller, this was an enjoyable read from start to finish. A perfect beach read (post lockdown)
A strange story with lots of twists. A marriage break up,a house to sell,an interfering mother in law and a missing brother. Lot's of varied characters and mysteries to solve.
I could t get into this novel. The beginning seemed repetitive and the storyline was missing interest and action.
Thank you to Netgalley, the publishing house and the author for the opportunity to read a complimentary advance reader copy of this book in return for a review based upon my honest opinion.
This was an okay read, but I just didn’t find it overly thrilling or was I on the edge of my seat as i thought it would be. I had figured out some of the mystery early on and the other part I didn’t find that interesting. The main character, Amber made a few silly moves and I did not understand why some of the characters were even in the book. I liked the overall storyline about the family and feel the book would have been better is there were less options for the outcome.
Thank you to Netgalley and Sam Carrington for my copy of The Open House, for an honest review. Nick and Amber Miller are splitting up and trying to sell their home. Amber, who’s living in the home with her son’s, is in charge of the sale. She hires a local real estate agent to sell.. Once it hits the market things start to get weird. The house doesn’t get any offers so the real estate agent suggests an Open House. Amber’s mother in law isn’t any help. The house starts to spook Amber and her boys. Things don’t seem right and there doesn’t seem to be any answers, just more questions. This isn’t a fast paced thriller, there are many twists and turns. Sam Carrington writes such a good suspense story and this one didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t wait to see how this turned out. This was a four star read for me and I have recommended it. I have shared this review on Amazon and Noble. I am glad I was able to read this..
This book was amazing! As a realtor, I was drawn to this book immediately. The twists and turns kept me up reading most of the night, and I did NOT see this end coming! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves edge of your seat thrillers!
When Nick and Amber decide to get a divorce, Amber is anxious is to sell their home, but it's a mess because her mother-in-law doesn't want them to sell. Then she decides to have an open house, where 13 potential buyers show up, but only 12 people seem to leave! I loved the three different points of view. The tension was super crazy throughout, and I loved the slow burn build up of the characters and the different eerie events. I ended up staying up super late just to finish the book to find up what happened!!
3.5 out of 5 stars for The Open House by Sam Carrington. A huge thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The first book I've read by Sam and I'll definitely be returning to her work. The open house is a fantastic concept and I was gripped by the end of every chapter. Sam's writing style really kept me turning thr pages.
I read this book very quickly thanks to such an engaging talented author! Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review. Great characters, setting and storyline. Would highly recommend.
I had high hopes for this book after reading the blurb but sadly it just fell flat for me.
I kept waiting for it to get started and it felt like it took forever for this to happen.
Then when things did start happening, too much was going on, which was frustrating.
There also wasn't enough background information when it came to the characters. It was almost as though we were meant to know who they were/like this was well into a series of books, which I don't believe that it is.
This made it incredibly difficult to know who these characters truly were.
Overall, this was a real disappointment.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
You want to sell your house because you are getting divorced but your house was a gift from your parents in law - and your mother in law is not happy with you selling the house. Amber holds an open house for potential buyers, 14 people come and only 13 people leave.
I wanted to like this book a lot, but it was predictable, and, the characters didn't feel real or thought out well enough. After halfway I struggled to finish it.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books UK for my ARC. Wow! This was a roller coaster ride! Amber is desperately trying to sell her house and begin the new chapter of her life. Recently divorced, she is ready to move on. Her path to a new beginning is filled with many obstacles. Her shady real estate agent, nosey neighbor, over bearing ex-mother-in-law and aloof new boyfriend are just a few barriers standing in the way of her new life. There are several creepy moments that definitely gave me a chill. The ending was one twist after another. Suspenseful, slightly predictable, and spine-chilling describe this very enthralling thriller.
A head twisting mystery. A unique storyline with a house for sale. Amber sees the people arriving at her open house through her doorbell camera. She feels one person never left. Strange things are happening. Is she an unreliable narrator or are there really creepy occurrences? A family drama with secrets, dirty liaisons, mysteries and suspense with a good storyline. So many twists with an I never saw that ending.
3.5 stars
Amber is getting divorced and has recently met someone new online, desperate to start a new life with her new man she wants to sell her old house. After enlisting the help of an estate agent he suggests she does an open house, Amber sets up a basic camera to watch the potential buyers enter her home, she counts thirteen enter but only twelve leave. After this a string of things begin to happen her children say they witness a man in their house, objects move from where they're are meant to be, is someone really inside her house?
Honestly? This story was a real page Turner but I do believe it had way to much going on, to many twists and to much happening at once which is the reason I'm giving it 3.5 stars. I however will read more from this author
I was really looking forward to reading this book as I love psychological thrillers. Amber lives in a house, which was previously owned by her mother in law, with her 2 boys. She is divorced, but on good terms with her ex husband. They decide to sell the house, so they can split the money a live their own lives. Nick would like to move back and be a family again, but Amber has a new relationship. She chooses an estate agent Carl, who, after not having much luck of selling the house, suggests and open house. On the day of the viewing she leaves the house with her boys and goes to her friend's house. Out of curiosity, she keeps checking on her phone how many people are coming to view her house. She counts 13, but only 12 leave the house. After the viewing strange things start to happen and Amber doesn't know who yo trust anymore.
This book was slow for me. I will read the author's other works since this was my first read by Sam Carrington.
The open house is a nail-biting, gripping read. Not gonna lie,i couldn't flip pages fast enough! Twists keep coming and coming. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time reading this book. Definitely this deserves shining 5-stars. I read the best psychological thriller book to start this year.

Amber was planning to sell the house and start a new life with Richard along with her two kids. Her ex- husband moved out of the house for cheating her. As per real estate agent suggestion, the open house event was conducted. Thirteen people went in only 12 left. On the other hand, Amber soon-to-be ex mother-in-law Barbara didn't like the idea of Amber selling the house and taking her grandchildren away. Barbara went behind Amber to do things that goes against Amber's plan. The whole wierd incidents started happening in the house after the open event, things were different places, feeling of being watched. Also, kids were scared of being watched by "the man in the house" at night. It was a roller-coaster experience. And highly recommend to others who love fast-paced psychological thriller.
A huge thanks to @netgalley and @avon_books for this eARC in exchange of my honest review.
Interesting characters with a great storyline I really enjoyed that kept me up at night turning the page. The ending shocked me!
I would recommend this book :)
I did not enjoy this book, I found it to be far too slow and ponderous. As I could not engage with the book I gave up at page 60, not a thriller of any style in my book
