I loved the original book, and was very pleased to have the opportunity to read this one. I very much enjoyed it, as I love the whole concept of the time-travelling cafe experience, and the characters, but I felt this book lacked some of the magic of the previous book. I would still recommend it, but I would suggest that people read the original book first.
Earlier this year I read Before the Coffee Gets Cold in pretty much one sitting and really enjoyed it so was delighted when I saw Tales from the Cafe was to follow.
Before the Coffee Gets Cold: Tales from the Cafe takes us back to the cafe to hear 4 more stories of those customers who wish to travel through time, whilst returning to some known characters too.
I actually think I enjoyed this collection of stories more than the original. Maybe it was because I was more settled into the concept and knew what to expect, but this book contains stories just as heartwarming and gives a little bit of closure too, which was lovely.
It was great to pull some of the original customers back and hear where their stories went and how the cafe helped them and changed their lives for the better, whilst hearing new stories and also returning to the staff and learning more about them.
Overall, this was a beautiful collection of stories and I'd urge anyone to pick it up and challenge them not to enjoy it. It's even perfect to read as a standalone book.
Many thanks to the publisher for the chance to read and review this one!
After a work colleague was reading this, I was so excited to get my hands on it! The premise is a lovely idea, and an interesting one. Can someone go back in time but not actually change reality?
The stories that were chosen were strong scenarios, but I dont feel it was executed to it's full potential. It was repetitive and too slow at times for me.
I struggled with distinguishing between the characters, which may have affected my enjoyment
I had just finished the first book in this series and wasn’t ready to let the characters go so was genuinely thrilled to get an advanced readers copy of this book. And this book is as good as the first.
Simple. Beautiful. Perfect.
There is a cafe tucked away in a back alley in Tokyo which has been serving freshly brewed hot coffee for over a 100 years but this café offers its customers more than just coffee, it also offers them the opportunity to travel back in time but there are a few rules you must know first...
This sounded like the sort of book that would take you on an emotional rollercoaster... and for me,it just didn't.
It was a pleasant enough read, with an interesting storyline, but it all felt a bit surface level.
I wonder if anything was lost in translation or if I expected too much.
Sadly I found this novel to be excessively schmalzy. The narrative was too repetitive and full of exposition (the time travelling rules are repeated too often, in the same way). The characters who are involved with the cafe—such as the waitress—feel rather one-dimensional. If you like plays you might be able to enjoy this novel...otherwise, you might find it a bit redundant.
