Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Collins Audio and Avon Books UK for providing me with an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Love Square was an absolute joy to read, I just couldn't put it down. It was really fast paced and each character was incredibly well developed. The Love Square is the story of main character Penny Bridge who has been unlucky in love (and dated some absolute arseholes) but when, in succession she meets three men who're all remarkable in their own ways, she has to choose just one. But can she?
I'm not a huge fan of love triangles in books, and so I was incredibly apprehensive to actively go into a book with a love SQUARE, but I'm so glad that I gave this book a chance and I definitely don't regret it. This is the first book of Laura Jane Williams' that I've read and I'm definitely going to look into her other books. This book was honestly just a great, feelgood romance with a lot of hurdles for Penny to overcome, and I adored both the book and the reading experience.
The audiobook is narrated by Carrie Hope Fletcher, whose audiobook narrations I've loved in the past and this was no exception. I think she does a fantastic job with every narration and does an incredible job to bring each individual character to life. It really felt like the narrator could be Penny herself and it was a really great listening experience.
Many thanks for providing me with a copy of this audio book to review unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to listen to it before it was withdrawn so have therefore been unable to review properly.
I always find difficult writing not so positive Feedbacks/reviews.
I really enjoyed the first half of the book, even if it took me little while to get into it it but it then took different turn for me. I'm not sure if it was meant to be called The Love Square or the sex square as I didn't feel very much love from this book. I guess it was just different to what I expected.
By the end of the book I started to dislike most of the characters and just didn't find it as enjoyable.
A lovely warm and comforting romance. Loved Carrie Hope Fletcher's narration it was perfect for the stories and the main character. It felt like the main character was telling you her story. Can't wait to listen to Laura Jane's next book narrated by Carrie.
I absolutely loved this, couldn't put it down and I found myself listening to this every given opportunity. Really enjoy Laura's stories and already craving the next one! Great read & absolutely loved the narrator.
This book was archived the day after I was approved so I never had the chance to download and read it. I was really excited as the premise is extremely interesting and it sounded right up my alley.
Based on first impressions, I will have to rate it so that it doesn't ruin my review score. I hope I have another chance to read it sometime soon.
Carrie Hope Flectcher’s narration was amazing! The best fiction audiobook I’ve heard in a long time.
I loved the story at the beginning but worry about some toxic values and the moral of the story when she gets back with Francesco??
Saying that, I adore Laura Jane Williams writing and will always read more from her, I’m just worried about the message it sends to the book’s young female audience (when Francesco behaves so badly but is wonderfully and easily forgiven).
Unable to download before archived as my tablet was damaged and I had been unable to afford a new one until recently. Apologies.
Took me a little longer to want to keep listening to this as it started really well then I felt it had a little dip but after the dip it was really enjoyable.
This is a light, slightly funny in places romantic story about Penny caught in a love square, I quite liked the three men she was caught up in their own unique way.
If you are looking for a book to escape into this is one for you.
Carrie Hope Fletcher as a narrator was also a win.
Thank you NetGalley for the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Two’s company, three’s a crowd, four’s complicated…
‘The Love Square’ follows Penny who after a string of bad dates and guys, meets Francesco. Then Thomas. And Priyesh. Penny is then stuck in a love square with these three guys and cannot decide which guy she wants to end up with.
I loved the first 30% of the book, and this book had so much potential because of it, but after that first 30%, I lost interest in the book. I think the main reason I lost interest in this book was because I did not like any of the three guys. I guessed really early on in the story who Penny would end up choosing at the end and it felt like the whole book was setting up for her and the guy she chooses to be together and the other two guys didn’t stand a chance. It felt like the other two guys were included only for drama rather than to have any chance of actually being with Penny. The guy Penny ended up choosing at the end was actually the worst guy out of the three in my opinion, especially after the scene where he slut shames her because he is jealous.
I liked Penny’s friendships with Charlie and Sharon, and felt like the scenes with them were some of the best parts of the book.
This book had so much potential to be an amazing book but for me it was simply an okay book. I didn’t hate it but I also was not madly in love with it.
I really love the cover of this book though and the cover was the main reason I wanted to pick up this book.

The Love Square starts off well and I liked the main character Penny. She has had a difficult time of it, her mum died when she was young and then she herself had cancer. Life is good now though and she’s looking for love. She meets Francesco and they quickly fall for each other. So far so good! However Penny then has to go away and this novel veers into tropes I dislike where suddenly she doesn’t communicate properly with people and it leads to all kinds of dramas that could have so easily been avoided. I felt really let down by how much Penny changed from being so open and honest and I just didn’t enjoy the second half of the book much at all. The narrator, Carrie Hope Fletcher, was very good though. Her voice really suited the story and I would listen to more books narrated by her in the future.
Firstly can I say how I adored the narrator's voice. I could have listened to her speak for hours, unfortunately the book wasn't for me. The storyline was ok but some sadness was a tad too near home so I had to stop listening.
Yippppppeeee!
Loved this light hearted chick lit, made all the more enjoyable by the narration by carrie hope fletcher!
Such a fun read and quite different and refreshing.
The story focuses on Penny, who has had a tough time of growing up with serious health issues which inevitably leaves her infertile and desperate for a child. Fortunately Pennys story is not the usual 'woe is me' but allows a wild year in dutiful family circumstances.
Really enjoyed the unpredictability of certain situations she finds herself in wth the added comedy factor. Who'd have thought!?
Narration was superb with disticctive accents for each character.
If you love easy light hearted poolside chilled reading then go for it!
Thank you for my free copy of this read/ listen from #Harpercollins and #netgalley.
The only reason for the missing star was the audio app #netgalleyshelf itself !
Sadly took ages to download successfully and had several glitches along the way.
For my first audio book gift in this manner, it was worth the persisting!
Was also my first book by Laura Jane Williams. I will be looking out for more!
Thoroughly recommend #TheLoveSquare !
(Will post links to my goodreads review once i can work it out!!)
Most people are looking for me right...but three of them!! Too good to be true surely...
An easy read to pass the time although pretty predictable. That said I would read another from this author.
A fun easy read with likeable characters but ultimately got unnecessarily messy when it was quite obvious who would be the HEA choice
First off, I would like to say that Carrie Hope Fletcher's narration of this novel was excellent! Her voice was engaging and compelling, and it was easy to fall into her narration while staying alert and interested.
Now, onto the book.
This book started off very strong and interesting, but I feel like I felt there was something missing from the ending. One of the most likeable characters did a fast u-turn nearer to the ending, becoming more unlikable as he said some things to the MC, and the switch in the narrative POV was sometimes hard to grasp. (it was third person omniscient that mostly followed Penny, the main character. However, sometimes during the novel, it changed to follow one of the love interests).
That being said, I did enjoy listening to this book. I really sympathised and like Penny, and how free she felt, while also exploring her emotions and navigating her life. Laura Jane Williams is absolutely a fantastic writer and Penny felt like a fresh, real character. Also, the relationship she had with her sister was phenomenal! It was consistent, beautifully written and sincere, which was just brilliant. The female centered relationships in this novel were amazing and lovely. Penny also had an awareness of her own flaws while still staying somewhat oblivious, in a sense that she didn't really know the entire impact what she was doing was having onthese other men, which was realistic and well thought out. It was like she was self reflective, and I think she was one of the most humane characters I've ever read. Laura Jane Williams did a great job with Penny.
As much as I felt I was enjoying this, I also felt that one of the love interests was unnecessary. It was like he was added just to add another, and we didn't get to see him develop as much as the first one, or even the second one, who wasn't even that expanded on also. I also did not like the author's insistence to include and somewhat fictionalise the singer Lizzo at every opportunity she could. Like, I did not like that at all. The first reference was one thing, but the inclusion and almost insistence to make her a character (and also a love interest. ?) was strange and off-putting. Too much space was revolved around Lizzo and who she was dating, and that was not necessary.
Now forcefully including Lizzo aside, I did like this book. Penny's journey was not simple, but she was endearing enough to me that I enjoyed reading it. She was the highlight for me, as were the other women and also Charlie, the non-binary character, who seemed so supportive no matter what their friend was telling them.
When I requested ‘The Love Square’ by Laura Jane Williams, I was in need for something light-hearted for a chill weekend afternoon, and in many ways, the book has not disappointed in that regard. The story follows Penny as she navigates her love life, career and family relations. And while it is many ways a light-hearted read with likeable, funny and most importantly real and flawed characters, it still touches on heavier subjects, amongst others Penny’s past fight with cancer that affected her relationships and still in many ways haunts her. But I think that added another layer to the story, while still remaining a nice and cheerful read in many other ways.
While I found the book generally engaging and fun to listen, at moments the plot has been a bit obvious, and I haven’t necessarily liked the way Penny dealt with all the relationships with men she entangled herself into. But I still rooted for one particular character (without giving any spoilers!), and I was glad to see it resolved by the of the book.
I have ‘consumed’ ‘The Love Square’ in the audiobook format (I seem to be listening to a lot of audiobooks recently!), and I have enjoyed Carrie Hope Fletcher’s narration of Laura Jane Williams’ book. I have seen her previously in a few theatre performances, so I’ve known I would enjoy her voice, and I wasn’t disappointed. I would definitely recommend listening to ‘The Love Square’, especially if you are busy with housework over the weekend, and want some pleasant distraction alongside that!
I will be posting my review on Goodreads & Amazon as well.
This book isn't for me. From the cover and the description, I thought I was getting a light-hearted romance to ease my IRL woes but this book turned out to be filled with sad topics that weren't for me
I had technical issues with this audiobook, so I don't feel I can really review it fairly. It took numerous attempts to download, including have to reinstall the Netgalley shelf app. Once I finally got it to play, it kept cutting out randomly during chapters.
Around 17% of the way in, it refused to play any further and crashed the app repeatedly.
I have now read the ebook, so I will review that in the correct section and just say that I really rate Carrie Hope Fletcher as a narrator. I will look out books that she narrates as I think she did a great job (based on what I did get to listen to, and a previous book she narrated)
I have contacted Netgalley about the issues I had and hope the tech team resolve the glitches soon, as having audiobooks available to review is a fantastic feature.
It’s so good to read a book with a strong female lead - Penny knew her own mind, hadn’t had an easy life, but did her best to live her life to the full. I loved the unconventional ending, a happy ending with a bit of a twist. This book looks deeply in to all the different types of relationships people have, and kind of makes unusual situations more normal. I really enjoyed listening to this book as an audio book- the narrator did a fantastic job of doing different voices for each character, the story flowed so well- credit to the writer and narrator, I think.
