Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis is a heartwarming and poignant story that captures the essence of friendship, love, loss, and redemption. The book tells the story of Emmie, a young woman who has always felt alone and isolated, until she meets Luke, a boy who finds her balloon and becomes her closest friend. When Luke announces that he is getting married, Emmie feels like she is losing everything, but as she begins to uncover secrets from her past, she realizes that there are people who will never leave her.
The writing style of this book is captivating, and the characters are relatable and well-developed. The author has done an excellent job of portraying the complexities of human relationships and the struggles that people face in their lives. The story is beautifully crafted, and the plot twists keep the reader engaged throughout the book.
Overall, Dear Emmie Blue is a must-read for anyone who loves a good romance novel with a touch of emotional depth. It is a book that will leave you feeling uplifted and inspired, and you will be rooting for Emmie every step of the way.
My First audiobook from Netgalley and i loved it. Not the best book to be listening to when driving (i.e tears running down your face) such a beautiful audiobook and i struggle with narrators but Katy Sobey’s voice is exactly how I would expect Emmie’s voice to be. Just amazing
Unfortunately, I had difficulties getting the audiobook to work on the NetGalley app. When I did manage to get it to work, I had issues with the sound quality, which it appears is something other users have also had issues with. However, I persevered as I really wanted to listen to this, especially as a bookish friend was also reading and thoroughly enjoying it.
The themes of friendship and love were heart-warming, and it was refreshing to read something other than the romances that I typically read. I did feel that I didn’t quite gel with the story but I’m still not sure why, particularly as the narration was good and I felt connected to the characters. Maybe this one just wasn’t for me, but I can see that it will be a favourite for others. Thank you to NetGalley, Lia Louis and Hachette Audio UK for the opportunity to listen to and review this book.
The sound quality of audiobooks on net galley are still incredibly poor. The sound is tinny and unfinished. It is like listening to a bootleg version of an audiobook, which is quite unpleasant. I was not able to finish listening because it gave me a headache and made the experience awful. I have submitted many tickets to have this issue looked at but it does not seem to be changing. Very unfortunate as I am an avid fan of audiobooks.
The audiobook never downloaded onto my NetGalley app. It was at the beginning of using the app and many mistakes happened.
Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis
What a heartwarming and beautiful story. I loved listening to this gem! A story about family, and love which made me laugh and cry. I loved the characters, especially Emmie who was so lovable! The writing was so well done, and I was hooked from the very start! Such a binge-worthy love story!!
5/5 stars!
Thank you Netgalley, Hachette Audio UK and Lia Louis for my audiobook advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
I absolutely fell in love with Emmie Blue and will now read anything Lia Louis writes. It was just the most perfect uplifting and quiet but complex story. I would recommend to everyone and anyone.
I was unable to download this book to the netgalley shelf app so unable to review. The app works now however didnt at the start.
I listened to the audiobook of Dear Emmie Blue, read by Katy Sobey. I enjoyed the narration on the whole and felt that it really embodied the character of Emmie well, although I did find it a little saccharine at times. This is my first book by Lia Louis and it was a enjoyable and heartwarming listen that I'd recommend if you are looking for an uplift in these challenging times
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital audiobook
I was really looking forward to this but it just wouldn't play on my Netgalley app, the files were all muddled up and they wouldn't play in the proper order. It was a shame, really, but I'll get myself the paperback at some point. Netgalley audiobooks just don't seem to play properly for me.
Emmie and Lucas have been friends forever, after Lucas found a message balloon that Emmie set free. For Emmie though friendship isn't enough anymore but when Lucas asks her to the best woman at his wedding she realises that things are not quite what she hoped for. This is a sweet and heartfelt novel about friendship, love and finding one's self. Brilliant characters, excellently narrated, and a story that keeps you listening long past your bedtime. I finished with a lump in my throat and a warm heart.
A modern romantic fairy tale!
I absolutely adored the audiobook, the narrator was clear and beautifully presented the story of Emmie, who released a red ballon with a message inside when she was sixteen.
A funny, sweet and intriguing story. Loved all the characters and the friendship created by the baloon’s story.
The audiobook was the perfect companion for my walks during the lockdown!
Unfortunately, Emmie Blue wasn’t for me. I found the concept frustrating almost immediately. Emmie quickly became a victim of her own fate in my eyes and I couldn’t look past it. I know this book will be a firm favourite for so many others, but not my cup of tea!
“Maybe home isn’t a place. It’s a feeling. Of being looked after and understood. Of being loved.” Lia Louis, Dear Emmie Blue
Oh man. I fell hard for this story. Dear Emmie Blue is lovely and just the hopeful story I needed this week. Themes of found-family, healing, growth, and finding our place in this world. Might just be in my top 10.
The audiobook narrator was excellent and made the story just that much more magical.
This audiobook is a magical modern day fairy tale.
Emmie Blue sent a balloon when she was having a traumatic time and it was found by Lucas in France and thus ensues a lifelong friendship. Their friendship is strengthened through mix tapes, films and being a similar age.
Emmie reaches the realisation that she is in love with Lucas, but all is not as it seems and Lucas's brother Elliott is in the background complicating matters.
This is a truly magical story and can fill many an hour getting lost in this story.
Beautifully illustrated characters and set in back grounds you can visualise.
Recommended to all who love a modern day fairy story.
Thanks you to the author, publisher and NetGalley in allowing me to listen to this story in return for a review.
Emmie Blue has always been more or less alone. Well, until Luke found her balloon. But now he is getting married and she is once again losing everything. But what if things are not quite as they seem and there is someone who will never leave her.
I had no expectations for this book. The cover just looked nice and the description was interesting. It turned out this book was perfect for me. I could not stop listening to it. From the first word spoken, I was hooked.
The whole story plot is so interesting and so gripping that I was a bit dazed when the final music was playing. The story is beautiful and I feel like thinks went exactly as I wanted them to go. In the end, everybody are happy, more or less.
I don't this book would not be as good as it is, if Elliot and Luke and all the other characters were not in it and I simply love every single character in this book (well, maybe there are few that I hate a little bit) and I especially like Elliot. He is such a good human being it's unreal. And I'm so happy that he ends up where he ends up. It just makes everything so much better.
The narrator of this book is simply brilliant. I really enjoyed listening to the clear, somewhat soothing voice and it was especially great when I was listening this book during the evenings, just before bed. I feel like the narrator really brings out Emmie. Her fragility and her loneliness. And then her happiness and everything else. I wouldn't mind listening to other book read by her.
All in all, this book is brilliant and it touches on some serious issues and how girls might be treated after rape or other types of assaults. And I really like how it brings out the struggle years and years after the actual situation. Lovely, lovely story!
Heartwarming and witty. Lia Louis has a wonderfully authentic voice and weaves tales that can't help but leave a mark on every reader. I can't wait to read her next offering!
This is a great book about a girl called Emmie Blue who, at age 16, released a red balloon with a secret message hidden inside. The balloon was then found on a beach in France by a boy called Lucas. Emmie and Lucas become best friends and she eventually realises that she has a secret crush on him. On her 30th birthday she hopes that Lucas is going to kiss her and ask her to be his girlfriend, but he tells her that he is engaged to someone else and is going to get married. Emmie is devastated, but she stays best friends with Lucas and along the way, her own love story with someone else might be on the cards.
I really enjoyed this book a lot and I highly recommend it. I listened to the audiobook version of the title and I loved the narrator, who had a lovely voice and was very good at portraying the different characters and different situations. I also had a great experience with the netgalley app, which I loved using.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and netgalley for allowing me to listen to a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved listening to Dear Emmie Blue, the narrator was easy to listen to and follow, she really brought Emmie to life. This book had a mix of everything it was sad, funny, heartbreaking and heartwarming! Such a beautiful story that will make you smile.
Lovely book to read. A little bit predictable but still very enjoyable. I loved the characters and felt empathy with Emmie. Definitely recommend reading this book
