I reviewed this book as part of my March Reading Wrap Up https://youtu.be/53Dl-yoZSbo
I absolutely ADORED this book. I loved the witchy Irish vibes and setting. The queer representation in this book was also a very important aspect to this novel which I truly appreciated. The way the novel engaged with contemporary political issues was also superbly done. Easily a 5 star read.
Loved the Irish setting of this book and the representation. The first half of the book with the main character finding the tarot cards at school, then her ex friend mysteriously disappearing was promising. Unfortunately I found the second half lost pace and dragged a bit. Would try something else by this author
I have enjoyed both of Caroline's adult audience novels, and from this sample chapter am sure to be as engrossed by her YA debut.
It seems a perfect introduction to tarot, something I am not familiar with. I also love the idea of the big family, something I am familiar with from my childhood.
I'll be continuing this book for sure.
I only had the sampler of this but I think it's probably just a tad too young in style for me. I think I would have loved it when I was a teen (I find I still like some YA but others I can't quite get into the right mindset). Thanks for the opportunity to read.
This one hooked me in from the first sentence. I loved the narrator's voice, and she's already growing on me as a character. I laughed, I felt angry, and I wanted to climb in the pages and hug her. I was sold when the tarot cards appear - I love anything with a sniff of witchery and tarot in it. Also, the blurb sounds spooky and creepy and I am all here for it.
The first few chapters of this have got me so excited for this book, I read tarot cards so this is right up my street! I’ve added it to my tbr and preordered it. Can’t wait!
An exciting introduction into what promises to be a great read. Cannot wait to read more once the book is actually out!
I was delighted to read a sampler of "All Our Hidden Gifts" by Caroline O'Donoghue, out spring 2021. Instantly I realised it would fit perfectly with the Irish Witchy YA my friends and I all love, and even after only reading a few chapters I know I'll be blown away, as will fans of Sarah Maria Griffin, Deirdre Sullivan and Moira Fowley Doyle.
The book begins with a teenage girl called Maeve who has to clear out a room in her school. While moving old furniture and throwing out rubbish she finds some items of interest, like a walkman with a mixtape of old music she doesnt know, and a deck of tarot cards. She brings them home and becomes immersed in learning about the tarot, which is far more interesting to her than anything else, and she picks up the main elements more quickly than her school work unusually for her. The sampler leaves off just as Maeve makes a new friend and realises there is something strange about the way the tarot deck appeared in her life and how easily she has taken to it, so I really can't wait to read the full book.
I know very little about Tarot cards but I'm so interested in paranormal/magic. This has my mouth watering for more!
I feel like everyone can relate to Maeve and everyone has had a bully of a teacher like Miss Harris. Maeve in this small section of the book feels already relatable and realistic as a girl who has grown up in a small religious town.
Already Maeve's dad is my favourite character and I hope he features more!
Will definitely be checking this out when it comes out next year, I'm just upset I have to wait so long.
This was just a sample extract, which unfortunately I did not receive all of it
From what I read, it seems an interesting read and different
Thank you Netgalley and Publisher for ARC
In this sampler we meet Maeve who has found herself in a little bit of trouble following and incident with a teacher. As part of her punishment she is forced to clear out the school’s old storage cupboard nicknames the Chokey (I love a Matilda reference) Whilst doing this she comes across some tarot cards and, after some YouTube tuition she starts offering her classmates readings. That is as far as the sampler takes us but I found this a really good opening to the story. I found it very easy to get into and was intrigued as to where the story will go. I believe the book will take slightly fantastical/magic turn teamed with a mystery when Maeves predicts become rather accurate and one of her classmates disappear. I have now added this book to my TBR and plan to purchase it when it is release.
Thank you to Netgalley and Walker Books for providing me with sampler for review.
This is a short sample of a title I want to finish reading now!
The extract contains the first three chapters of a magical realism story, or so it seems to fit that category..
Maeve doesn’t do well in school so when she receives internal suspension and finds a tarot deck she is amazed at how fast she earns the cards meanings, even given a true reading to her dad. Could Maeve be a witch? The name certainly has historic links to magic.
The characters included are well rounded with hints of strange family dynamics and some lgbtq+ side characters who just fit like it’s normal (as they should). Within the first chapter I found myself giggling one page at the witty writing and the next I had shivers as the tension increased. It also made me nostalgic for my childhood, although it wasn’t in the basement my school had a cupboard like this where everything was stored.
The only issue I have with this book is it seems to be contemporary in its setting as parts of my 80’s and 90’s childhood were referenced as dated, but the task given to a student in in-school suspension seem ridiculous to this teacher, especially the part where she is left alone all day. I know it’s to get the setup for finding the cards but modern safe guarding would not allow for this & it is an awful implication that staff would. If the time period. Is the 90’s I could believe this but not the calm acceptance of LGBTQ folk in catholic Ireland so it feels a bit like two time periods are clashing.
I am honestly so blown away by these first few chapters. I have really fallen in love with the characters and the setting. I am really sad to not have it all to devour!
It's not enough to form a full opinion on but I hope that I will be able to request the full copy soon. I have a feeling this is going to be an amazing book!
Thank you so much for letting me read this YALC sampler.
Really compelling story, I can't wait to read the full book. Maeve is very interesting and I love tarot.
And the cover is stunning.
I enjoyed this three chapter sampler from Caroline O’Donoghue. Whilst this is only the beginning of the story I can already see Carolines trademark skill for incredible character development. The first three chapters have outlaid an the beginnings of an intriguing story. I look forward to feeding the full story! Its hard to give a full review on sampler but as an author, Caroline has yet to disappoint.
Already completely obsessed with this! The Victorian school, the protagonist’s voice, the tarot theme! Can’t wait for more.
I’m excited to read more from this book, judging from this sampler! Maas seems feisty but good hearted, the tarot cards isn’t something I know much about so I look forward to learning more and the writing seems pretty funny - it made me chuckle that the dog has IBS!
