I love these books and this one didn’t disappoint. The illustrations are fabulous and the content is child friendly and engaging. Glad we have this one as it’ll really appeal to the football mad readers
I continue to enjoy this biography series geared to young children. One of the things I love is that the people chosen are from a variety of backgrounds, countries and cultures. This one highlights a soccer/football player that is well known in the field, but I did not know much about his background or what he did after his playing career ended. Born Edson Arantes, Pelé was given his nickname by his schoolmates. He loved playing soccer from a very young age. He even made his own soccer ball out of old socks and newspapers since his family couldn't afford to buy a ball. We don't really see much about the slums he would have grown up in because he was plucked from the neighbourhood to train for the national team relatively young. I do think the parts of his life that were highlighted will pique the interest of young readers. The fact that the book begins with Pelé being young and dreaming big, is what gives this series its name. Sharing about his humanitarian efforts after his soccer career ends was great information to share that sports heroes are often generous and many are worthy of being looked up to. Just like the other books in this series, this book is full of appealing illustrations that fit the person and the place where they grew up. As always with this series, it is a book that shares with the reader that anybody, anywhere, can become the best at whatever they want to achieve with hard work and the desire to follow your dream.
We loved this book! I grew up, learning to play football, and was inspired by Pele and his story. Years later, I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book to my daughter, and tell her the beauty and inspiration behind Pele’s life and his actions. This is a wonderful book and one your children will love, whether they love sports or not. We also love the wonderful illustrations.
I adore this series and strongly advocate its use in schools. This title doesn't disappoint. With the familiar style of bright pictures and child-friendly vocabulary we learn about Pele's humble beginnings making footballs from rags to a hero of the Brazilian football team. As always with this series, there is a more detailed biography and suggestions for further reading. This series is great to use to introduce young people to influential figures and teaching about biographies.
I received an eARC of this book from the publishers via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely love this collection. This title was special to me as I grew up listening to my dad talking about Pele. The story is really well written and it is certain to inspire children and young people to persevere and go after their ‘big dream’. I can’t wait to be able to share this book with the children in my class.
This is a superb addition to the collection. I know so many children who will want to read this book and I am sure parents will be happy to buy it for them. Love the colour scheme and illustrations used. Well done to the team.
I really like the range of Little People Big Ideas books and this one didn't disappoint. Like the rest of the range it is just amazing, highly suited to children, great illustrations, simple enough for them to understand but you learn something too.
The story of the one of the best footballers who ever existed, Pelé.
Born in a very humble family, Pelé became one of the best players not only in Brazil but in the entire world.
I love how this little book portrays not only the football skills of this important man, but also his ideas and actions to use football as a medium to bring different people together.
Beatiful illustrations and great pick for another lovely book of this series. I would totally recommend this!
This picture book is full of so much heart and an absolute joy to read! The illustrations are so vibrant and engage the reader so beautifully.
Writing about a football legend like Pelé could not have been an easy feat, but Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara captures him in such a relatable light that is sure to inspire children of all ages as well as the entire family!
I received an early copy through Netgalley.
Pele by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara is a small book from the Little People, another fantastic book to join the other books by Big Dreams books. I just love these sweet little books. They're an introduction for young preschool readers to learn about amazing, wonderful men and women that have our influenced the world today.
A must have for all small children's education.
Big Thank you to netgalley and the Quarto Publishing Group for a free copy for an honest opinion
Believing in yourself will drive your dreams.
In this beautiful Little People, BIG DREAMS book about Pele we find out how once he promised his father that he would one day play for Brazil and win the World Cup (and how he did it).
As a Bookseller, I know that the Little People, BIG DREAMS series are very popular.
As a parent, I know how useful a resource these books are in helping inspire my own children with their learning.
Another amazing book in this collection. Beautiful illustrations and simple but effective storytelling. This is the perfect gift for a child in your life.
I am a massive football fan so was thrilled to see this title added to the Little People, Big Dreams series. This is the story of how a young boy with a dream and a promise to his father became one of the stars of world football.
Starting out with a ball he made at home using rags and newspaper, Pelé worked hard on his skills and rose through the amateur ranks. His footballing journey would take him from the poverty stricken streets of Baurú to playing games in the biggest stadiums on the global stage. Along with his teammates, Pele would be part of Brazil’s greatest footballing success and helped them to win three world cups. He was a legend on the field and would become a legend off the field long after this playing career had finished. He worked to ensure that others from poor backgrounds would have the chance to fulfil their footballing dreams, just as he did.
Delightfully illustrated with bright and bold artwork and with a story told in short and simple sentences, this is an inspirational read for any young person with big dreams of being a sporting icon. At the back of the the book there is a short overview of his life which includes key facts and dates and a historical timeline featuring photographs.
There is no doubt that Pelé is one of the greatest footballers to have ever played the game and his work off the pitch is testament to what a great individual this man is. Little People, Big Dreams: Pelé is due to be published on 1st September 2020.
Recommended for 5+.
With thanks to Netgalley and Frances Lincoln Publishers for the ARC.
A great addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series. The story of Pele is truly inspirational and is a great example to children that they can be anything they want to be! As we have all come to expect from this series, the illustrations are stunning and vibrant. This book would be a welcome addition to any child’s bookshelf.
I'm ashamed to admit that this is the first in this series of books I have read. I'm aware of Pele but didn't know his story and this was a lovely introduction.
A simple text and lively, colourful illustrations give the story of Pele, his background and why he is a famous name.
I was really impressed with this book and could imagine using it in the classroom. I liked how accessible it is but also the extra information at the back for adults.
Thank you.
Another great book in this series. I love how the story is simple to follow but gives a really good insight into the life of a footballing great. The illustrations are beautiful; as always in this series of books. The little section in the back with extra information and a timeline is a great addition. I would definitely recommend- the perfect gift for any young sports fan
I really love the books in this series and this book on Pele is a great addition to the series!
Most people know Pele as purely a footballer but this book shows that he is so much more than that, he has done a lot of work encouraging children from poorer backgrounds to get the same chances as those who are lucky enough to have more.
The book has some lovely images and it was well written and easy to follow - it is 5 stars from me for this one, it is another great addition to this seres - very highly recommended!
Another inspirational book from the series which shows children that anything is possible if you want it enough. This books fills the reader with hope and inspiration.
The illustrations are beautiful and reflect the story well.
