Let's be honest...I wanted this for the pictures and they didn't even come close to disappointing. This is a beautiful resource and great for anyone who just loves astronomy.

Imagine a night sky. It could be from your front porch, from a lonely mountain, from a high-powered telescope. There could be an aurora in the sky, a meteor shower, a clear view of the Milky Way. Or it could be cloudy—if so, imagine better.

The Night Sky aims to present you with everything your imagination could be taking advantage of; in this case very real examples of the majesty of the heavens from all around the world. While there is some text to read, some notes and descriptions to take note of—this was all about the photos for me. They are stunning, and completely blew me away.

While it initially sounds more like a guide from the title, I’d say Night Sky is rather more aimed to inspire and impress. If it gets you out exploring the stars on your own—great! If not—that’s fine too. It’s more a representation of everything the night sky has to offer to the common observer. There are notes on night sky photography, light pollution, stargazing, and more in the beginning and back appendices. The heart of it focuses on the photos themselves; taken from each inhabited continent, each one a stunning image in a book filled with them.

I was presented with the ebook version first, of which I didn’t have the best opinion. First off, I couldn’t put it on my kindle. Not that the photos would’ve been nearly as impressive there for me, but it was frustrating all the same. On my phone, the photos were quite stunning, but wee tiny things. I could enlarge sections of them, but never see the photos themselves full-size. That and the text was next to impossible to read this way, as I’d’ve had to enlarge it quite a bit, only to scroll along word by word, line by line to read through it.

So I did what any reasonable person would.

I went out and bought the print book.

I was not disappointed.

Note: After I finished this review, I attempted to locate the ebook version anywhere online and could not. So… my problems with it are moot, I guess. Seems it was just a pdf of the review copy, or something? Anyway…

Retailing at around $25, this was a splurge for me. Beyond that, even. I don’t even like throwing down that kind of money for a book I know I’m going to read and enjoy multiple times over. At first it was enough to make me waffle and ultimately regret my decision—but then I received the book itself.

First thing, the pages are thick and glossy, perfect for printing high definition photos on. They’ll also resist tearing, which is nice. The descriptions are easier to read in this version, but they’re really only fun facts and notes about the accompanying pictures. The photos themselves steal the show.

This is a perfect centerpiece (if you’re into that), or something to leave out on your coffee table for perusal or idle guests (again, if you have either of those things). For someone like me, I found that I most often looked at it during the day, then it inspired me to go out and look at the stars come night. While I’m fortunate to live in an area with generally low light pollution, I do know that not everyone is as lucky. And for them, this book might in some ways assuage this.

For those like me who live in cities, this book offers a welcome look at the night sky. The lovely photographs from every continent are astounding, showing such sights as the Milky Way, the aurora borealis and aurora australis, solar and lunar eclipses, and more. The accompanying text gives information about locations and views shown in the photos, and their are star charts in the back to help identify constellations. A perfect book for city-bound stargazers.

This is a fantastic collection of photographs of the night skies from around the world. It is filled with information on the sites these photographs were taken, as well as a small section at the beginning on the do's and dont's of taking a good photograph of the night skies.
It would have been a little better if there as more information on how the photograph was taken (camera and lens) however in the book's defence there is a picture credits section should you want to investigate more.
This is a good coffee table book with some stunning photographs for anyone interested in astronomy as well as a resource for any beginner photographer.

A beautiful book with photographs that are truly amazing. The book is divided into regions around the world so you can quickly find the area you want. The pictures cover most sky events that you are familiar with including the northern lights, comets, Space Station, meteor showers and more. One chapter gives helpful hints on taking better pictures. A great gift for the person who loves coffee table books or astronomy. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Beautiful pictures!
This book has many beautiful pictures of the night sky. It starts out by giving you some information on how you can take your own pictures of the sky using your digital camera. But the page and a half with this information is the only place in this book that gives you any information-none of the photos tell you what settings were used.
The book is much better at showing you what you might see from any of the continents, with a section for each. At the back is an index of places, a sun and moon section, and six very small star charts. If you are wanting a book to help you figure out the night sky, this isn’t it. But the pictures make it a 5-star photo essay book.

Night Sky is a collection of photographs from around the world of the night sky. Now you would think that this could end up being very repetitive, but Harvey ranges to include just the right mix of photographs that it does not feel like anything has been repeated. All of the photographs in this book (barring one) are from the style of Astrophotography called Landscape or Wide-Angle (the others are called Deep Space Astrophotography and Planetary Astrophotography).

In the Introduction, we get a brief explanation as to how to do astrophotography, along with what you are able to see in the night sky with the naked eye. As someone who has had an interest in Astrophotography for a long time, it is good to see that all the hours that I have spent online researching how to attempt Astrophotography myself have been summed up for any to give it a try.

Split into 5 different sections based off the different continents; Europe, North America, South America, Australasia, Asia Middle East and Far East, and Africa. Each section has a selection of stunning images that will

The perfect coffee table book for just about anyone.

Beautifully shot photos! That I expected, but we're also treated to a bit of info on the areas where the images were shot and the astronomical phenomena such as the aurora borealis. This would make a perfect coffee table book to page through when you need some visual relief. There are also some tips included for creating your own images.

Thank you Amber Books Ltd and NetGalley for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

I'm speechless because the pictures were breath-taking and I couldn't stop looking at them.
I think this must be an amazing coffee table book.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.

This book gave me a bad case of wanderlust. The pictures are all beautiful, I couldn't get enough of them. As a fan of photography, the night sky fan, and travel I absolutely fell in love while looking at all these pictures. It truly makes you want to go see the world.

Night Sky has absolutely amazing pictures of the sky. The book starts explaining how to take pictures of the sky. Then, the book is splits into different geographical areas with pictures. All of the pictures are breath taking and I am in awe by them. Some pictures show constellations and highlight the constellations, so even someone like me that has trouble finding constellations can see them. The appendices include the different phases of the moon and star charts.

I really enjoyed Night Sky and recommend it to anyone that wants to see different pictures of the sky.

Thank you NetGalley and Amber Books Ltd. for Night Sky.

**I received an e-ARC from NetGalley for an honest review**

The photos are absolutely beautiful. I viewed this book on my iPad, so I imagine that an actual book would be breathtakingly stunning.

By showing the stars from sites from around the world, a depth and scope are given to the work that allow the reader to travel along and dream that they are actually there with the photographer.

As an amateur photographer myself, I know how difficult night photography can be. I wish that the camera settings had been included with each photo, but for most people, this isn't an issue.

Overall, this book is not only beautiful, but inspiring as well. It would make a perfect coffee table or conversation piece, but it's a great book for any library, personal or professional, to have. The inclusion of basic photography information and the star charts would make this a great gift for any budding photographer.

It is a beautiful Book. It contains pictures of celestial objects that are visible through common camera, in the areas of earth which are relatively free from light pollution.
It has pictures of moon, eclipse, Milky way, venus, Mars, constellations and beautiful auroras.
With each picture their is small description of space chunk visible.
It is very eye soothing and informative collection of high quality pictures of space that will motivate youth and teenagers to come out of their houses and see where we are suspended and revolve continuously.
A wonderful picture science book.

"Night Sky" by Robert Harvey offers magical views of the natural beauty of our planet and night sky.

As a resident in one of the most light polluted places on the planet, I was amazed and envious of the variety of breathtaking pictures of the milky way reflecting on still mountain lakes, Aurora Borealis (and Australis) in peaceful natural settings, eclipses, meteor showers, star trails, space station trails, and other stunning vistas. Not only are these pictures quite esthetic but the prose is educational also, since each of the pictures is accompanied by a concise, easy to understand, and accurate description of what we are gazing at. Some descriptions also contain useful hints as to the technique behind the artistry. (Selfishly, I would have also appreciated detailed information on lens, camera, settings, and other equipment for each of the pictures, but I guess that is one of the purposes of amateur astronomy magazines.)

This wonderful work would make a great coffee table book, and the memories of these pictures will encourage me to continue to explore the night sky not only with the naked eye but also with binoculars and a good camera.

"Night Sky" is full of beautiful photos, some of which are nothing short of breath-taking. However, a lot of the photos seemed to show scenes that can't been seen with the naked eye (a camera is needed), which I found really disappointing and a bit misleading. I had hoped there would be more information on how to spot constellations/planets, but there wasn't enough to help me out with that. Still, it is a wonderful book - and probably the best way to see the night sky all over the world.

My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advance copy to review. This review is entirely my own, unbiased, opinion.

This is a gorgeous book with vibrant, beautiful photos of the night sky from all around the world. It's broken down by continents and features constellations, comets, eclipses and much more, all that you can see without a telescope. I appreciated the tips on how to photograph the night sky, too.

My digital ARC was extremely low photo quality, so it made it hard to fully appreciate the photos or read the italic print. I assume this was to compress review copies and to discourage piracy, but I'm guessing I would have enjoyed reading this even more with the real photos. In any case, it's a beautiful book that's not only great for sky gazers but photography and travel buffs as well.

I read a self destructing digital ARC of this book for review.

"I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
This book is beautiful and educational. I love how it is broken into what you can see in the night sky based on where you live (continent). Oh how I wish we had had this book two years ago when we studied geography & astronomy. It would have been a perfect compliment. I could see it as a beautiful add on to either subject though.
