Did not review given the arrest of the author in Japan for sexual assault. We chose not to cover the title on a moral stance to not send readers the author's way.
Yonagi has landed a role in a major film alongside a superstar but has issues reigning in her acting abilities. She has a lot to learn and may even make some friends along the way.
This volume moves at a fast pace, building up the drama and challenges Yonagi faces, There are further character development and a wider cast of characters. The interaction between characters is revealing and contributes to the arc. The illustrations capture the humor and emotions well.
It's too bad the creator got into some hot water because I enjoyed this storyline and the "behind the scenes" look at film making and acting in Japan.
Yonagi has been cast in her first big budget movie - but in doing so has alienated one of the people in her audition group and royally pissed off Japan's #1 actress. Now she is thrown to the wolves, trying to learn the very basics of acting from a bunch of top notch pros while trying to figure out how to fight her instincts to dive SO far into her characters that she doesn't listen to any of the intentions given to her by the production crew.
Can she make it in the cutthroat industry or will the Star agency's "Angel" swallow her whole?
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own*
Okay, first off I want to say I loved reading this one. Absolutely, loved it. I read it and immediately the first thing I did at work the next day was buy this from Baker & Taylor. Then I saw volume 2 on Netgalley! I requested it, read it immediately, put it in my cart to purchase at work, and was so excited for this series.
Then, the author gets arrested *sigh* Such a bummer that good works have to be ruined.
I don't want to get into it, but I am not buying more for my library -- then I noticed Viz is also stopping publication of this series, so High Five to Viz! I knew there was a reason you were one of my dream jobs when I was considering being a translator.
To review this book is complicated, you see? Yes I enjoyed it, but we aren't getting more in English, probably no more in Japan, and what is the point of waxing on about another good book by a bad author?
Let this be a review for Viz then and how awesome I think they are. Great work y'all for taking action, being responsive to the community, and for continuing to translate fantastic books for us all to read.
Advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Act-Age Volume 2 comes out on the 1st September 2020.
I absolutely love this series! I was so excited to see the 2nd volume available to request on NetGalley because I loved volume 1 so much. I even filmed a whole video review of it, which will come out on my channel in the future! Now onto what I loved about this volume specifically.
The plot of this volume was engaging and exciting. I desperately wanted to know what would happen next, would Kei be able to master becoming a professional actress? Especially with the limitations of her own acting skills. As she is an extreme method actress, she transforms herself into the role of the character she plays to the point where she could hurt costars or herself, she starts to learn how to control her characters and be aware of cameras when she acts. What is so gripping about this volume is seeing Kei develop as an actress and the effects she has on other people's acting. I read this book so fast and I was really sad to see this volume end. Especially with that cliffhanger.
I absolutely love this manga. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you are a fan of Skip Beat!
