I didn’t really find this book helpful, itasnt very clearly written and the help seemed confused and chaotic, not one for me sadly.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Parts of me feel extremely frustrated in reading this book. It's as if the words being used are simply going in circles without ever really saying anything.
There are some phrases, a paragraph or two that have clarity, cogency, and coherency, yet they are scattered between pages and pages of words that don't seem to get to a point.
Chapter 10 was semi-clear.
The exercises listed in the book seem to be little more than a weak re-hash of some of the prevalent buzz-words and exercises listed elsewhere in the digital and printed paper world.
I found myself having to force myself through the book to try and be able to write a review of it here to fulfill my obligation for having asked to read it.
I'd suggest a rewrite, while at the same time offering real, pragmatic. steps to take and/or exercises to show how to actually acknowledge and process emotions.
Emotions and the body do indeed "go-together-hand-in-hand" yet this book didn't illustrate that. It was like reading a stream. of consciousness writing rather than a "help" book.
This is a good handling of the ins and outs of understanding your feelings. Most books on this topic feel like the first few classes in the world's most basic and boring 101 class on 'mastering your feelings before they master you.' Rehash and basic common sense, But this book beautifully glides by all of that basic filler, giving us credit for having read other books in the field. I liked many of the pertinent bites of insight. There's lots to turn around in your mind, self-assessment material, things to journal. It's worthy, and will stay with you. You'll feel more on par with your feelings, especially when they weigh heavily after grief and shocking behavior of others. Nicely handled there.
This is the first book of a two-book series. The first part of the book covers about feelings and how we reject difficult feelings and they lead to emotional blockage. The second part of the book talks about how to accept the feelings and also has some exercises to sort complex feelings and to relax. Similar to the second book, I felt the first 50% of the book was repetitive, where the same concepts were repeated. The second half of the book provided solutions and was an interesting read.
This is quite good. It may not solve all of your emotional challenges, but should provide some helpful tools and approaches. At the very least, you'll have a better understanding of how emotions work and how to better work with them. Recommended.
Thanks very much for the review copy!!
This short book packs a big punch, as it is filled with useful information on the intricate subject of feelings. The advice on managing old feelings was excellent. I appreciated the fact that the author didn't add a lot of filler to this book to make it longer. She stuck with the pertinent information.
Despite being just short of 100 pages, the amount of information within this book is vast!
I have recently been having some psychotherapy sessions and it's made me super interested in the theory behind it all. I found that a lot of the things we have been speaking about in my sessions have come up in this book. This validated the fact that both my own individual sessions, and this book were filled with credited information.
I really enjoyed it, and really like how the book is broken up. I love the summaries/key things to think about at the start/end of each chapter. This really helped to focus the mind. It was definitely needed too as some of the chapters were a little similar.
As previously mentioned there is a lot of info to take in within the book - and I think it will take probably a couple of re-reads in order to get the most out of everything. Although, saying this it was written in a way that was very easy to understand and relate to. I think this book would be great to listen to as an audiobook, and think it would be easier to take in some of the info.
I also liked the way there were exercises to try - these were placed sporadically throughout the book - which I thought was very good. I have found with similar books of this nature they are slightly 'overfilled' with exercises and become very repetitive.
I will definitely be re-reading, and I would be interested in checking out more of Dr Graham's other books within this series.
