This is one of the best books of 2029, as far as I am concerned. A split second decision upends the life of the protagonist and sends everything she ever cared for into a tail spin. An incredible read!
Tony Parsons is famous for both his books about relationships and the experience of life in general, and also a very successful series of crime novels. His latest novel, "Your Neighbour's Wife", is a blend of both.
Tara and Christian Carver appear to be a Golden couple, both are physically attractive, she runs a successful dating App while he looks after son Leo during an ongoing period of being "between jobs". They have a lovely home, close friends and Tara's business keeps them quite comfortably off.
In a moment of madness Tara disrupts the lives of several people when she spends the night with another attendee. .This has massive ramifications for everyone close to her and blows her perfect life to pieces. when her one night stand makes it plain he wants a lot more.
This book is as much about people, and how they react to events and interact with each other as the core narrative unfolds, secrets are revealed and their real characters are revealed, both for the better and the worse.
This is a gripping tale with plenty of twists and turns,as ever in a Tony Parsons book you very quickly feel as if you've known the characters for a very long time, some you'll love and admire, others you'll loathe and despise. As a now-defunct newspaper used to carry as it's byline, all human life is here.
A great read and another guaranteed best-seller for Tony Parsons.
Brilliant. One of the first books in months to keep me up half the night. Absolutely unable to put it down. Lots of twists and turns, a real page turner. Well written and very enjoyable. Thoroughly recommended.
Your Neighbour’s Wife - 3 stars
Tara seems to have it all. A successful business, a good marriage to Christian and a happy family life. But then she has a one night stand on a business trip with James Caine and he is determined to ruin her life.
The book is told by Tara and Christian and at first it had great promise. About 40% in, I started losing interest and it all got a bit unbelievable, especially the story line about the abusive DI. I think I’m in the minority here as everyone else seemed to love it, but for me, it was just an ok read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Cornerstone for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tara and her husband Christian seem to have it all. Tara has her own business and Christian looks after their son Marlon.
When Tara meets James on a business trip and spends the night with him she returns home and try’s to put her night of indiscretion behind her.
Only James isn’t willing to leave her alone as he injects himself in to her perfect life she finds herself getting desperate to keep him quiet.
James is a master manipulator. He blackmails and stalks Tara and then he’s found dead in his hotel room..........
I found myself invested in this story after only a few chapters which is exactly what I look for in books (slow burners don’t really do it for me) but after such an intense few chapters I felt like the author took his foot off the gas a little bit and as a result the middle of the book felt a bit flat. It did keep me guessing but by the end I didn’t really care what had happened or who was responsible. The book had a great start, a good ending but the middle was just a bit formulaic and ordinary.
Thanks you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
My thanks to Netgalley and Random House for a copy of “ Your Neighbour’s Wife “ for an honest review.
This was every a good psychological thriller should be.and more It had well written characters and a storyline that moved along well , and kept me guessing right to the end..There is also an insight into how relationships can change and life can alter after making the wrong decisions.
I was well aware of Tony Parsons as a music journalist but have never thought to read any of his books so luckily for me I have a lot of his previous work to catch up on.
I cannot recommend this highly enough
A psychological thriller by Tony Parsons; Tara and her husband seem to have the perfect life living together with their son. However, a conference in Japan leads Tara to an action which will change her life forever. With her life spiralling out of control, Tara needs to do something drastic. With lots of twists and turns, this is a gripping and interesting read.
Your neighbours wife is a family type drama/ police investigation with a psychological undertone!
Tara and Christian appear to have it all, a young son, an adorable dog, great house, good friends and an enviable lifestyle! However all this changes once Tara meets a man when she is in Japan on business, unwise choices have far reaching consequences as Tara finds out in the aftermath of her indescretion ! Coercion, stalking and blackmail disrupt Taras life and the actions that are taken vine with life changing consequences for all the family!
Fast paced in places but rather drawn out at time’s but overall a good read.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and it will not be the last. I really enjoyed the writing style and the story really gripped me from the start. I enjoyed the exploration of the different characters in the book. What we initially see on the outside is not necessarily the whole story. There are a few things that prevented me giving this 5 stars. Firstly I questioned some of the police procedures and whether people could be charged on the evidence that the police had. I also guessed the ending but was not fully convinced. I also think that the book could have been condensed a little bit as there was some unnecessary detail in my opinion. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more of Tony’s work.
I really enjoy Tony Parsons’ work and so was excited to try this one.
Tara and Christian live in a loving marriage with a child and a dog. Their happy normal life is changed when a man called James Caine enters Tara’s life while she is at a conference in Tokyo.
James Caine changes everything.
This book is easy to read and has all the obligatory twists, suspense and mystery, Unfortunately this felt a little bit formulaic and not very enjoyable unlike other novels by the author.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me this ARC in return for an honest review.
A spectacular work of psychological suspense/thriller with spaghetti junctions twists. This is by far the best book I've read so far this year. It completely blew my mind, I can't praise it high enough. The relationship between Tara and Christian is so life-like and seems normal until the fateful Tokyo twist. Then it turns nasty with the aid of James Caine, the highly successful stalker. All the characters are believable with so much hidden depth and secrets aplenty. I absolutely loved it and it kept me turning the pages through the night. Their is so much happening for the first fifty percent of the book, I was asking myself "where is the story going to go next?" Then there's even more drama and twist and turns you don't expect. This will definitely be on the bestseller list for weeks if not months. Tony Parsons is an amazing author, and he knows how to keep the reader enthralled. I just want to say a huge THANK YOU to Netgally and publishers for allowing me to read this ARC. It exceeded my expectations. Loved it, Loved it, Loved it.
I really love Tony Parsons' work so was looking forward to this.
A deviation from the gritty crime dramas I usually read, this is more a family drama with a dark underbelly.
It's a joy to absorb the beautifully descriptive writing which is almost poetic in it's delivery but if I'm honest, the plot wasn't one I'd have read if it wasn't for my respect for the author.
Many thanks for the opportunity though and it's one I would still recommend to my (more gentle) friends, family and colleagues.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy. Not bad. The writing was very simple so easy to follow; a quick read. Some suspense, some twists, but overall it was a very average read.
Tara Carver is a successful owner of an online dating app, she’s happily married to Christian and they have a son, Marlon. Whilst in Japan on business she makes a split second decision to ‘stray’, a very bad choice in more ways than one as it causes her lovely comfortable life to implode.
The book starts extremely well and pulls you in to the gritty storyline which is told alternately by Tara and Christian. It rapidly becomes extremely creepy and scary as Tara has a stalker who makes provocative threats and rapidly becomes a bloodsucking manipulative and controlling leech. This part of the story is dark and done very realistically. The pace is fast for the most part although there are places where I feel it’s a bit drawn out. There are some very good twists although I’m not entirely convinced a police team would have bought one of them but hey, this is fiction! The characters are good, they’re mostly flawed with the exception of the delightfully gentle Marlon whose choice of reading materials earns a round of applause. Whilst I really like the ‘ties it all up with a bow’ ending I’m not sure it entirely matches the preceding storyline???
Overall, a really good and enjoyable psychological thriller that examines bad choices, harsh life lessons and bitter regrets and loss.
With thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone (Century) for the arc for an honest review.
Oh my goodness, what can I say? I loved this book. It was brilliant. The characterisation is spectacular and so skilfully done you feel as if the characters live next door; as if you want them to live next door. This is a heart wrenchingly beautiful and poignant story, told from the dual perspectives of Christian and Tara, a happily married couple. From the descriptions of their marriage and their home and their little boy Marlon, and their dog Buddy, to feeling like you are in Tokyo with the characters and then back in London, I became so immersed in this story, I didn't want it to stop. I read it in two sittings and was annoyed when it ended.
This book explores the choices we make within marriages, the theme beautifully woven amongst the supporting cast of characters. With a hint of High Fidelity, with the main character Christian being a music journalist, and flickers of Man and Boy, this plot is skilfully crafted, taking me down paths I didn't expect and ones that I did, I was totally engrossed.
The only comment I would make, is the title seems to have no relevance to the plot or the book?
This book will make you ugly cry, but it will also make you smile.
I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the arc.
In this standalone novel, we meet Tara Carver, her husband Christian, their son Marlon and dog Buddy. They’re a happy family; Tara is the breadwinner while Christian looks after Marlon at home. Tara is easily liked and her business is going from strength to strength. But during one night while away from home, promoting her business goes out the window for her to put all that she’s worked for at risk. The man she spends the night with does not want to leave her alone; in fact, he’ll go to extreme lengths to ensure she doesn’t forget him. For a panicked Tara there’s only one option – but surely she wouldn’t do that? This is a layered story about family, friends and work, and how easily they can be tangled. I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed this and recommend without hesitation.
I thought this was quite an old fashioned story, been done lots of times before. Spoilt rich girl has amazing husband, child and dog. Owns a successful business, is popular with her friends and staff, idolised by daddy, you get the drift! What else can she possibly want? Oh, I know a one night stand in Tokyo. From the start we all could see James was going to be a bad lot, but Tara fancied a little excitement. Well that came back to bite her!
Although the twists and turns were good, at around .chapter 34 the story began to lose its appeal and events seemed to go out of control. The last few chapters were poor, with the characters all getting rushed. The drinking detective storyline was such a cliche and totally unnecessary, as was the chapter about Spike and the forceful advances. Although I finished the book, it was a struggle and I expected better. Also, what’s with the title? No idea who the neighbour or his wife were!
A triffic read it got my attention from the start with some great twists and fab characters Tara rich parents only child horse in the back garden or paddock, you get the picture. So Tara is married to Christian they have the one child a 5 year old boy the apple of their eye and Tara's patents also, well you'd expect that.
So there we go what could go wrong nothing at home but Tara has to go to Tokyo to give a speech at a conference and we'll one thing and another but... that was meant to be a one of only it's not and the trouble (James) follows her home and expects a repeat or two only Tara wants none of it she decided that after that one night before she had even left Tokyo. James is the problem and he's not going away. So we get to see how Tara copes or doesn't and the fall-out is pretty spectacular for the reader, if not so for those affected in the story. There also someone trying to destroy her business an online dating service well their the in thing now I'm told. All the characters are used for the tale there not just filling in or filling out the plot, Tony adds to them all in a fantastic way as in I loved the way he used them.
So obviously it's a thriller it's not what it seems and you will be shocked or surprised depending how you see things but I'm sure you won't regret getting this book which you should if thrillers are your thing.
I'm giving this 5 stars as it was a great read had me fully engaged and unable to guess correctly where it was going several times and I love the ending which only makes sense if you read the whole book first and that's how it should be in my view that is.
The main character - Tara Carver puts her seemingly perfect life at risk by having a one-night stand on a business trip, with James Caine, who later in the story is murdered. I enjoyed reading this book, despite finding the characters interesting rather than likeable. I found this an engaging story with the relationships between the characters interesting and the whodunit aspect making it a page-turner. Although, I didn’t understand the relevance of the title.
Tara has it all... a loving husband, a wonderful son and a growing successful business. On a business trip to Tokyo she risks losing it all with a brief fling with another man. Back home, Tara is pursued by the man but isn’t interested. He just won’t accept no. The real problems begin when he ends up dead. Who killed him? There’s plenty of suspects and as you read through your own suspicions change with each chapter. It kept me hooked. This was my first Tony Parsons book but I’ll definitely read more.
