This book was only OK I'm afraid. It just didn't grip me. I was expecting more.
The characters lacked depth and the investigation was sloppy.
As a huge fan of the Max Wolfe novels I was excited to see this was available for review. Sadly, I was hugely disappointed. The story, based around a brief liaison on a work trip, while easy to read was spread too thinly in terms of plot.
Unusually for Tony Parsons, I felt the characterisation was weak – apart from Buddy the Labrador – who was brilliantly described. Characters like Spike, Tara’s parents, the two Daves – all caricatures sadly – although I enjoyed the brief glimpses of Tara’s driver! In general, the characterisation felt ‘old fashioned’ – hot older women in yoga gear, muscle-bound pumped personal trainers, chubby co-workers whose brilliant idea was the driving force of the business…all led to a rather disappointing read – I could only just be bothered to finish it.
I really enjoyed all of this author's previous books so was intrigued by this new offering. Unfortunately really disappointed, firstly what relevance does the title have? The characters are all horribly selfish and self serving and I just didn't get the point. A few hours wasted but hopefully the next book will see a return to form
I never repeat the blurb. This was simply not for me. The characters were unsympathetic and I could not be bothered to find out what happened
Great book. Really enjoyed the storyline and the characters in it. It was really well put together and kept me turning the pages to the end. Would recommend this to my friends x
All actions have consequences. That is the theme of Your Neighbour's Wife, a captivating psychological thriller, or as Tara Carver’s father often told her “you bought the ticket”.
Tara and her husband Christian have a picture perfect life. Tara runs her own company Angel Eyes, a successful dating site. Christian is a stay-at-home dad to five year old Marlon. However, when Tara travels to Tokyo to give a speech at an entrepreneurs’ convention she makes a mistake that will tear her life apart. As she waits nervously before speaking, a handsome older man gives her advice, then leads the standing ovation when she finishes. He is James Caine and she spends the night with him. James Caine is not the wealthy, charming man Tara thought him to be. He is a manipulative stalker who threatens Tara’s marriage, her family, her friendships and her business. Can she free herself from him before Christian finds out? Can she save the business she has worked so hard to establish?
Your Neighbour's Wife is a thrilling read, full of almost unbearable suspense. You can feel Tara’s desperation as she tries to convince James to stay away from her. You’ll hold your breath as the story moves to a totally unexpected conclusion. This thought-provoking thriller deserves all of 5 stars.
Thanks to NetGalley, Random House UK, Cornerstone and Tony Parsons for this ARC.
Tara attending a conference in Tokyo, free from family and responsibilities, acts in a totally irresponsible and uncharacteristic way, which starts a chain reaction of events.
This is a dramatic, graphic thriller exploring how a woman starts being harassed and her desperate attempts to stop her husband Christian finding out, asking the help of friends. Characters are skilfully drawn and develop as the story unfolds. You find yourself questioning whether certain things are being left unsaid, and the plausibility of some of her friendships.
Tara’s successful internet dating company is also being threatened, and learning more about her friendships and relationships, we discover that things aren’t all that they seem. This complex plot is skilfully drafted by a talented author, with various twists and turns which keep you absorbed. The book is about love, infidelity and betrayal – a chaotic mix which threatens Tara’s family and business.
I couldn’t put this book down. Highly recommended.
This is a great tale about what decisions and choices we make when the opportunity presents itself, and how the consequences of those choices can send shockwaves throughout our lives, affecting those we love and changing our reality.
Full of twists and turns, this book is a real page turner. However, I found the constant references to designer labels, the casualty fat shaming of anyone isn't the main protagonist, and the flippant, unchallenged racism uncomfortable, outdated and old fashioned. Two stars were lost because of this
A thoroughly enjoyable story with lots going o nkeeping you enthralled into the story. I did find myself thinking I knew what happened, questioning this several times and just about every person caught up in the story before it all came out.
If you are a fan of psychological thrillers then READ THIS! Now when I say I read a lot, I mean, really a lot but in all sincerity I could not put this down. So much so, that when I woke at about 1.30 am I picked it up and then stayed reading it all night.
It is a cautionary tale about Tara and Christian – she is a successful entrepreneur with a dating app, he is the stay at home Dad minding their adorable son. They have it all, a beautiful home, exciting life, in love with one another and they are way beyond comfortable financially and their sex life is more than satisfactory. Then Tara has to go to Japan and unfortunately Tara thought that the saying ‘What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” was true (but substituting Tokyo for Vegas). So one bad choice only leads to another bad choice and so on.
Sounds pretty tame? It really isn’t, it is powerful, well structured, fantastic plot and great characters with good dialogue. You couldn’t ask for anything more – except another one please Mr Parsons. I am in awe of your skills and really, really grateful.
Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. Not having read any Tony Parsons since Man and Boy, which I loved, I was keen to read this new one. Tara is a successful business woman, happily married with a young son. However, on a work trip to Tokyo, she has a one night stand with James. She immediately regrets it, but realises her mistake when, back in London, James insists that he wants a relationship with her, and is threatening to destroy her family. But how far would you go to stop that happening? Would Tara resort to murder?! This is a cracking good read which will keep you on the edge of your seat til the end. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
This is an intriguing story with many twists and turns. Tara started her own dating agency which has certain poignancy to it when she has a casual affair on a business trip to Japan. Then her happy marriage and other relationships get out of control and murder enters the story. The characters are very well drawn even if every one has relationship issues including the senior detective on the murder case. The writing about the various relationships is very perceptive and memorable. The question pose to the reader is about who committed the murder. That keeps you going even after the case is apparently resolved. Of course, it is not as it appears and all is revealed in due course. The climax is particularly poignant. I recommend this as a really good, challenging read.
This book grabbed my attention from the beginning, it is written in a very chatty manner, and initially I felt empathy with Tara. However, the plot became increasingly implausible and I lost any liking for Tara completely. I would not recommend it to my friends to read.
I didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. My preference is for Tony Parsons' crime / police procedure novels (I have a relative in the police!) and although this is a crime novel, it's largely about personal relationships (and some quite graphic sex). It is also written from the perspective of several characters, mainly Christian and Tara, the husband and wife at the centre of the story, and generally I prefer a single story teller.
However, I found it very difficult to put down. I quickly became immersed in the action, especially Tara in Tokyo, and I was hooked. I think the book is very well written (better than the crime novel I read just prior to this one) and kept me awake reading well beyond my normal bedtime.
Tony Parsons looks set to take up a significant part of my bookshelf.
Thanks for an advanced copy. The story tells of Tara who runs a dating agency app business and husband Christian. They appear to have a perfect lifestyle until Tara falters whilst away on business. She is then stalked and hunted by the man she met, Her life falls apart as well as those close around her as the story is full of lies and deceit. the plot thickens and just as you think you have guessed the ending there is a twist and another twist. I found this an addictive read and will be reading other books by this author.
This was a brilliantly chilling, gripping psychological thriller. An outwardly happily married woman with a successful business and seemingly perfect life that spirals out of control after her actions on a business trip set in motion major repercussions resulting in a web of deceit, guilt a chillingly controlling stalker and results in a murder. Twists, turns and red herrings galore. Fabulous.
An amazing stand alone thriller by Tony Parsons, who is best known in the thriller genre for his Max Wolfe collection of stories.
This has so many twists and turns that it feels like you are on a rollercoaster.
It tells the tale of Tara and Christian and how a night of a big mistake for Tara, rips apart the lives as they knew it.
Tara runs a dating app business, but little is she prepared for her life to be changed by the man she meets one night in Tokyo.
The characters are well illustrated and the plot is addictive. The end is not guessable and you change your mind so many times during the plot.
This is showing Tony Parson's as a master of this genre and is highly recommended.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to read in return for a review.

A master thriller.
Tara Carver seems to have the perfect life. A loving mother and wife, and a business woman who runs her own company, she’s the sort of person you’d want to live next door to, who might even become your best friend.
But what sort of person is she really Because in one night of madness, on a work trip far from home, she puts all this at risk. And suddenly her dream life becomes a living nightmare when the married man she spent one night with tells her he wants a serious relationship with her.
I loved it's characters.
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK Cornerstone for giving me an advance copy.
THIS was awesome! I love stories that take seemingly good characters, have them make a really effed up mistake, and then the turmoil it causes in their lives. This was an addictive read and had me glued to the end. Great writing style!
Last time I read Tony Parsons was in the early 90s so a very different genre of book! I enjoyed it, as always he writes with his own style and flair and has the characters down to a tee! I wasn’t fond of Tara, found her a bit spoilt, Christian was a lovely warm character, one I could have fallen for! A story with twists and turns and had me guessing lots! Thanks Tony a great read!
