This is a great read.
Tara has a successful business, a husband who loves her and a lovely son.
She goes to Tokyo on business and is tempted by a man who shows her some attention, and before she knows it, she’s spent the night with him.
Tara immediately regrets it but James won’t let her forget it.
Back home,Tara feels so guilty and from chapters from her husband, Christian’s perspective, he knows she’s been unfaithful.
Events then spiral out of control and Tara’s life starts to crumble around her.
This is a gripping psychological thriller that I really enjoyed.
Thanks to Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book
This is a good psychological thriller which I enjoyed but didn’t love. I found the start a little slow and the ending I found didn’t really fit with the final chapters that led up to it.
However the middle and main part of the novel were good and kept me reading. The characters were well rounded and although I couldn’t understand why the leading lady Tara had decided to have a one night stand with a random man in Tokyo when she was clearly in a fabulous loving relationship; I guess it happens.
The plot in the main then revolves on the repercussions leading on from that night. Tara returns home to find that her indiscretion has followed her and that the stranger want a to be part of her life, whether Tara wants it or not.
The who dunnit element of the book are well crafted and I was guessing both correctly and incorrectly throughout. The eventual revelation is not a disappointment and I could see how the story had unfolded.
As I said the ending was odd and didn’t really fit with the storyline, I felt. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
A twisting and turning psychological thriller told from Tara and Christian's point of view. It's a slow burner, then all of a sudden it takes off and you just need to know whodunnit! A good book, one that I'd happily recommend to anyone that enjoys domestic thrillers.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an advance copy of this book.
My thanks to Random House U.K. Cornerstone for an eARC via NetGalley of ‘Your Neighbours’ Wife’ by Tony Parsons in exchange for an honest review.
Tara Carver is a loving wife and mother, who runs her own business. She travels to Tokyo to attend a conference but in a moment of madness puts all this at risk. She spends the night with James, a handsome middle-aged man that she had met at the event. The next morning he assumes that this is the start of a relationship. Tara has no interest in extending the encounter and she tries to avoid him for the rest of the trip.
Yet back home in London he isn’t happy to be ghosted and continues to pursue her, even turning up at her workplace and threatening to reveal details of their encounter to her husband unless she agrees to an ongoing affair. He seems unaware of how sinister his behaviour is, claiming “I’m not some stalker, Tara. That’s what you have to understand. I’m not some mad bunny boiler!” Oh, nice ‘Fatal Attraction’ reference, James. There appears to be only one drastic solution to rid her of this pest before he starts boiling her family’s pet....
As the cover tag line reads: ‘Love Story. Murder Story. Her Story’, it’s not really a spoiler to say that a murder is at the heart of the plot.
The narrative viewpoint moves between Tara and her husband, Christian. Both Tara and Christian used to work in music journalism but now she runs an online dating platform and he is a stay-at-home dad, looking after their five-year-old son, Marlon.
This novel utilises a successful trope of the psychological thriller/domestic noir sub-genre, in which a successful woman makes a mistake that endangers her seemingly perfect life.
This novel proved very twisty and certainly kept me guessing. I also felt that Tony Parsons did well in exploring the stresses that the couple are facing as they leave behind their carefree youth to the demands of being responsible adults and parents.
This is the first novel that I have read by Parsons, though he has an impressive back catalogue. His biography states that he writes what he terms ‘Man-lit’ examining the complexities and challenges of relationships. It seems a good definition. I did appreciate having Christian’s perspective of events alongside Tara’s.
In addition, Parsons has been a music journalist, which is demonstrated here in Christian’s background and his ongoing interest in the music industry.
Overall, I found this a well paced and engaging domestic noir and after reading it I will be interested in exploring more of Parsons’ work.
Tara Carver is a successful business woman, she created an online dating app. She is happily married to Christian and they have a 5 year old son Marlon.
Life is rosy until she goes to Japan for a business meeting and in the spur of the moment, makes a rash decision to sleep with a stranger. But what happens in Tokyo does not stay in Tokyo as she soon finds out!!
She returns home hoping to put this mistake behind her, she loves her husband, they have a great life together and she does not want to jeopardise their marriage .. but the damage is already done!!
Her one night stand wants more from her and will not take no for an answer. He is following and manipulating Tara and she is terrified her shocking secret will destroy her and her families lives.
A gripping read that is full of twists. An excellent psychological thriller that I would 100% recommend.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
While this is an exciting book, with lots of twists and turns, it didn’t grip me, nor did I care for any other characters. The problems for me were that none of the characters were likeable, anyone could have committed the crime which comes later in the book, but I still wasn’t convinced about who it had been when it was revealed because it still seemed like it could have been any of a number of characters and finally, the book title left me confused.
I really enjoyed this book. It was the first book that I have read by the author but I will definitely be checking out more as I am a big fan of psychological thrillers.
Right from the off I could tell that this author was a very experienced and talented writer as from the beginning you are right in there with the characters. Also, I really liked the way that t he author developed his characters, both make and female, which is something you do not often see at such a high level.
There are lots of twists and turns and it is a book that you will soon be flying through the chapters.
The I my negative point for me was the title. Not sure if I missed something but I could not find a way of linking king the title to the storyline.
This is a story told from both sides of a relationship. It is a live story and a murder and crime story but I feel that the way the book is written it will appeal to many audiences.
If ever there was a book that should have a Spotify playlist with it then this is a great example as I could imagine the soundtrack playing in the background which gave a different dimension to the environment..
Many thanks to Netgalley, Random House UK, Cornerstone and Tony Parsons for providing me with an advanced review copy of this bok, in digital format, in exchange for a balanced review
An extremely busy couple of weeks completely stalled my reading but now I am back and ready to read, read, read. Thank you to @tonyparsonsuk, @penguinramdomhouse and @netgalley for an ARC ahead of publication next month. I devoured books by @tonyparsons from 'Man and Boy' in 1999 to 'Men from the Boys' in 2010. After 2010, I'm not sure what happened as I never picked up another of his books. After reading #YourNeighboursWife I will have to remedy that hiatus and read all of his other books. #YourNeighboursWife made for fast-paced and engrossing reading. With that familiar setting of Japan, I felt like I was dipping into one of his earlier books but with the added dimension of the psychological thriller. Tara and Christian are presented as the perfect couple, with their comfortable set-up, catchphrases and Prosecco- code but after Tara's mistake at a conference in Japan, it all spirals out of control. I enjoyed the characterisation of many characters in this book, from the side-lined Mary to the yoga-honed mother of Tara. Parsons is adept at depicting normal family life and this is what makes his books so tangible. The only issue I have with the book is the title as after finishing, I still can't connect it with what I have read. That aside, I loved it and it certainly kept me guessing. One to pre-order if you like a domestic drama with a few twists to keep you guessing.
I was very disappointed with this book as it features a character who makes a big deal about their morals of never cheating on a spouse only to then cheat on the spouse and then pity themselves when it blows up in their face
Tony Parson’s has been writing novels for thirty years and this book is very much in his style. The plotting is sound and the whole piece is very well written, as befits someone of his experience and reputation.
The title may seem misleading since no neighbour, let alone one’s wife, features in the story. It is a reference to the 9th or 10th (depending on which version you know) Commandment, where coveting your neighbour’s wife is banned). Coveting another man’s wife is the driving principle which initially motivates this story which is much more than a murder mystery, although there is a murder and there is a mystery.
Tara is a beautiful, spoilt little rich girl, daughter of a self-made man. Confident and assured she makes friends easily and is loved by everyone; or so it would appear. However, through the story we see the fragility of her world, built on the cosseted , indulged, childhood and adulthood which her father has provided.
A former music journalist (and self-confessed ‘wild child), she is married to another, Christian. They live a fairly affluent life in Camden with their six year old son, Marlon. Tara now owns and runs a successful on online dating agency, while Christian is a stay at home father. Everything seems a picture of contentment until Tara appears as a speaker at an industry conference in Tokyo. Seduced by the thrill of speaking, the excitement of the city, the freedom, she is also seduced by the charming gentleman, James, who had advised her on presentation style. She spends the night with him, regrets it the next day, avoids him the next and returns home regretful but feeling secure in her marriage. But James is a serial coveter of other men’s wives and won’t let go. Everything in her world starts to unravel and descend into chaos.
I would like to thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a prepublication copy of this book for the purpose of this review.
I’d like to thank Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Your Neighbour’s Wife’ by Tony Parsons in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Tara Carver, founder of ‘Angel Eyes’ dating site and happily married wife and mother, is on a business trip to Tokyo to speak at a conference where she meets married middle-class James Caine and in a moment of madness spends the night with him. As far as Tara’s concerned it’s just the one night and she avoids him until it’s time for her to return home but James Caine has other ideas. He wants to be part of her life and starts stalking her until she seriously considers paying someone to warn him off otherwise her marriage to Christian could be at risk. Then the police come knocking on her door!
‘Your Neighbour’s Wife’ is a chilling and intriguing thriller of a woman who makes a mistake and then lives to regret it. It’s the perfect example of a ‘who done it!’ where there’s lots of suspects any one of whom could be the person responsible, and the further I got into the story the more undecided I became until I reached the last few pages and the final twist only to find I’d been completely wrong all along. It’s been well-written with a believable plot that had my undivided attention from page one and kept me reading well into the night. I can only describe this as an excellent novel, one I can recommend without hesitation and worthy of five stars.
This was quite a fast paced novel and started really well.
Tara is the breadwinner who runs her own dating app but then goes on a business trip to Tokyo and while there the unthinkable happens. Her world starts to come apart.
Christian her stay at home husband looks after their son Marlon.
The story is told by both Tara and Christian.
I did enjoy this up until 3/4 of the book and then I felt the rest was pointless. It seemed that the author was just making up the word count.
We find out right at the end what really happened but by then it lacked the thrill.
Thanks to Netgalley and Random House for the ARC

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I read some of Tony Parson’s early books but haven’t read any of his later work. Based on what I know I thought it would be good. It was brilliant. The female protagonist is so well written and the story so intriguing, I could not put it down. But equally, I wanted to read it slowly and take it all in.
Fantastic murder/thriller/love story which kept me guessing. The ending did not disappoint.
I’d like to thank the author, publisher and NetGalley for this advance digital copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.
Tara was one of my favourite characters of 2020 I loveg her ruthlessness & her personality jumped off the page. Thid is a great book & kept me well entertained.
Superb! Read it....is that enough for a review? 😊
This is a emotion charged read, based around what happens when a wife, for no real reason she can say except she had the chance, has a one night stand with someone she meets in Tokyo at a hotel bar, confident this is a blip in her happy family life and not wanting it to be anymore than that and genuinely not doing it for any motive, she loves her husband, son, career and life, it really is a spur of the moment rash decision that wont haunt her
How wrong she is, as she returns to her family the man follows her, and he follows her into every bit of her life, she is horrified and as his manipulation increases so do the stakes for Tara, and then, well, then the book really starts..
Immersive and frantic yet at times reflective and poignant this book is everything I didn’’t expect mingled with a host of characters that I didn’t really like ( inc Tara ) but for once this didn’t hinder the read it enhanced it
I cant quite explain the brutality yet tenderness of this book at different times but can say it will stay with you and its one of my top reads of the year.
Maybe Superb....read it really does sum it up better!
10/10
5 Stars
Absolutely fabulous read. Had me on my toes from start to finish. Loved how the main character, Tara would stop at nothing to protect her family. Brilliant twist at the end which was not obvious at all!!
I am a big fan of this author's Police Procedural series featuring Max Wolfe so I was quite intrigued to see how he would deal with a stand alone psychological thriller. And I have to say that I was more than impressed and thoroughly satisfied. Maybe for full disclosure I have to mention that there were a few things that I just had to swallow that maybe weren't quite as plausible as I would have liked for realism but hey, this is fiction and I'm happy to take one for the team in the name of entertainment.
So... Tara is working away when she meets a man who, well, let's just say she's drawn to. A one night stand later and it appears that the man, James, wants more from her. She is full of guilt and regret and just wants to forget the whole thing. He has other ideas however and so begins a warped tale, full of twists and turns as Tara tries to reclaim her life and save her marriage.
One little (hmmm) mistake. Big consequences. Consequences that have aftershocks for Tara and her marriage to Christian who is a stay at home father to Marlon, 5. A family so solid initially that I am not quite 100% convinced that Tara would have strayed in the first place, especially given her job. But then again, who am I to judge and, if she hadn't, we wouldn't have had a story!
And what a story it turned out to be... Delivering shock after shock as Tara becomes more and more desperate to save her marriage, to keep hold of her family.
And James... wow - what a character! And that's all I can really say here as I want you to experience the whole embodiment of his character as the author intended for maximum impact. Suffice to say that the author painted him to be completely plausible and I am sure there are men like him around in the world for real and, there for the grace, I have never encountered such a person. Phew.
It's emotional and shocking, and packs a whole load of punches all the way through. It kept me on my toes throughout as I tried to work out what the end game was, and where all the characters would finish up by the end of the book. Definitely an edge of your seat kinda read.
Pacing is good and the story gets on with itself very well with no superfluous padding or waffle. Characters all feel real and play their parts well, both major and minor.
All in all, a cracking read that I thoroughly enjoyed even though I really miss Max Wolfe and wanted another book of his! My thanks go to the Publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Tara and Christian have the perfect marriage. Tara is a successful business woman and Christian is a stay at home father looking after their son Marlon. When Tara heads of on a business trip to Tokyo neither of them expects what followed.
Told from both Tara and Christian’s point of view we witness the aftermath. There are twists and turns which leave you wondering who did it?
I found at times this was a little slow and I was skim reading to get to the conclusion.. I also found the title a tad confusing. That said it was an ok book and I would recommend.
Tara Carver's life looks perfect; adoring husband, 5 year old son and a lovely labrador. Until she makes a mistake on a business trip to Tokyo and everything starts to spin out of control! Do not start reading this at bed time if you want to sleep! I could not put this fast paced psychological thriller down and read it in one sitting
A bit of a slow burner but a solid three star read. It picked up pace about two thirds through and then there was suspense to keep me interested although I guessed the culprit. I would definitely read his next offering. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
